1
Does your dog cry when you leave the house?
2
And are they really worried whilst you're gone?
3
Then your dog may be suffering with canine separation anxiety.
4
In today's Ask the Vet, I'll be discussing canine separation anxiety, why it happens, when it happens, and what you can do to help your anxious pooch.
5
Separation anxiety is when dogs become extremely stressed when their owners are not with them.
6
So why does it happen?
7
Well, separation anxiety has always been a very common issue in canine companions.
8
Dogs are pack animals, hence incredibly social creatures by nature, and very few actively enjoy being left on their own.
9
This type of anxiety is often triggered by loneliness, boredom, a lack of training in being left by their pet parents,
10
or if they've had a negative experience when left alone in the past.
11
How can you tell if your dog is suffering with canine separation anxiety?
12
Puppets with separation anxiety are known to toilet indoors, howl and bark when you leave the house, become destructive and sometimes even cause themselves injury.
13
When can it happen?
14
Separation anxiety must be addressed very early in life to ensure
15
that a puppy can be left home alone without becoming severely stressed.
16
The use of a training crate and baby gates are great ways to establish boundaries with your doggy shadow, ensuring your puppy cannot always have access to you,
17
enjoying a safe, comfortable and secure area for those moments when you can't be with them.
18
If you allow constant contact when you're at home, it's no surprise that your canine will get stressed when not able to gain access to you in the future.
19
So this sense of feeling comfortable in their own skin must be trained into them during their development into adulthood.
20
So how can you help?
21
To try and reduce stress associated with leaving the house, I recommend the following seven top tips.
22
Number one, Routinely exercise your dog before leaving the house to ensure
23
that any nervous energy has been expended with positive play or a stimulating walk.
24
2. Give your bestie a treat, toy, kong or chew to keep them occupied when you leave.
25
3. Be careful to avoid cues that can encourage a dog to become anxious, such as putting a coat on or jangling keys in front of them.
26
Consider more obscure places to keep these things to not set off your pooch's anxiety.
27
Number four, leave for very short periods of time initially, increasing the time spent away over time,
28
so your dog becomes eventually less stressed and anxious, appreciating that their beloved owners will inevitably return home.
29
Consider using puppy cams and other smart gadgets to keep an eye on your dog
30
and help guide you as to how your training regime is going and when to return to your dog's side.
31
Number five, don't make a fuss about leaving the house.
32
If you make a big deal about leaving, your pooch will think that it's a big deal.
33
Avoid excessive praise when returning home, only giving your excitable dog attention when they're calm and relaxed.
34
Number six, maybe consider the use of a pheromone
35
or scent hormone diffuser or calming supplements to help promote a calm indoor environment.
36
And number seven, for severe cases of anxiety, please don't feel that you can't reach for prescription medications from your vet
37
or the use of specialist behaviour advice to help canine patients and their pet parents understand and overcome this debilitating doggy dilemma.
38
Separation anxiety in dogs can be a really worrying and upsetting thing to go through, so I hope this video has been of some use.

比如“does your dog”中,“does”和“your”会连读成/dʌz jɔː(r)/;“a lack of training”里的“of”弱读为/əv/。还有“puppies with separation anxiety”中,“with”可能会弱读成/wɪð/甚至/wɪθ/。
