And his name was Mike.

On September 10th, 1945, farmer Lloyd Olson was preparing chickens for market on his family's farm in Pruta, Colorado.

His axe came down on one particular bird and the head fell down to the ground.

That should have been the end.

But incredibly, the chicken stood up, stumbled a bit, then started walking without a head.

Lloyd Olsen, likely more shocked than anyone, gently placed the seemingly doomed bird into a box for the night.

By morning, expecting to find a lifeless body ready for the cooking pot, Olsen opened the box only to leap back in disbelief.

There was Mike, still very much alive,

wobbling around and pecking blindly with his neck as if nothing had happened.

So, how in the world is that possible?

Well, there's a science behind it.

You see, a chicken's brain isn't all in the head you'd expect.

Most of it is stuck safely at the face of the skull, low and toward the back, just behind the eyes.

When Olsen swung the axe, he accidentally missed the crucial lower part of the brain stem.

That little piece left intact was responsible for basic survival functions,

breathing, heartbeat, digestion and even some movement.

In other words, Mike lost his head but not the part of his brain

that kept him alive and so began a bizarre journey into roadside fame.

Realizing he had something miraculous and profitable, Olsen and his wife Clara started taking Mike on tour,

travelling to fairs, carnivals and side shows.

People paid to see the miracle rooster that wouldn't die.

Mike was fed by dropping water

and food directly into his open neck with an eye dropper and mucus was cleared from his throat using a syringe.

He even made it into Time magazine, strutting his stuff as the world's most famous fowl.

But fame didn't last forever.

On March 17, 1947, while staying in a motel in Phoenix, Arizona, Mike began to choke on mucus.

The syringe that kept his throat clear had been accidentally left behind at the last show.

Tragically, the Olsons were unable to help and so Mike the Headless Chicken finally passed away.

And yet, his legend lives on.

Every year in Fruta, Colorado,

the town celebrates Mike's strange survival with a festival that includes chicken races,

wing-eating contests, and tales of the Headless Wonder.
