Every seed is like a tiny package of life, full of potential to grow into a plant.

A seed has three main parts.

The seed coat, which protects it.

A tiny plant called an embryo.

And stored food, which will provide energy for the first stages of growth.

When a seed gets water and warmth, it begins to grow.

This process is called germination.

As the seed coat breaks open, the first thing to grow is the root.

The root anchors the plant and starts to take in water from the soil.

Tiny root hairs on the root help it absorb even more water.

At this stage, the seed is using its stored food for energy.

Next, a shoot begins to grow upward, pushing through the soil.

Leaves start to unfold and grow.

With the stored food used up, the leaves take in sunlight and begin making food through photosynthesis, and the young plant continues to grow on its own.
