Hi, I'm Dawn from TheMinimalMom.com and coming up next,
2
I would like to share with you the very simple trick to getting through all of your kids' clothes
3
and simplifying it in 10 minutes or less.
4
Seriously, it doesn't have to take all day.
5
I'll share that with you next.
6
Well, I'm Dawn.
7
If we haven't met before,
8
I am married to Tom.
9
We have four kids, ages three through eight.
10
And we also sell residential real estate,
11
but we work hard to live a minimalist lifestyle.
12
I don't always like that word because it can sometimes separate us
13
or it seems unachievable or maybe not even like something you would want to do.
14
But for us, the benefits have been awesome.
15
And so it's something we continue to do.
16
And I always like sharing tips of how you can achieve simplifying and,
17
and minimizing things a lot quicker than it took us.
18
Right?
19
And so one of the areas that I put off simplifying for quite a
20
while was with kids clothes because they had so many.
21
And honestly, my biggest fear was that I would get rid of something
22
that we would later need and I would regret getting rid of it and then we'd have to buy it again.
23
It would cost more money and all of that.
24
I want to share with you my really simple trick for simplifying your kids' clothes where you can eliminate
25
that fear and you don't have to worry about getting rid of something that you might need.
26
And now remember this before we even get started,
27
your kids are probably a lot like all of us where
28
we tend to gravitate towards wearing the same few pieces all of the time.
29
They're the most comfortable and they're the things we like the most.
30
So I'm guessing your kids are really no different.
31
And so with that being said,
32
I wanna show you just a really easy approach to simplifying your kid's wardrobe
33
if they have a ton of clothes right now.
34
So step one is do all the laundry in your house
35
so you know that you have at least like 99% of their clothes right when you get started to work from.
36
So I have clothes here.
37
This is for our three-year-old.
38
I had to pull some clothes out of stuff I have set aside for him to grow into
39
and some of it's from our six-year-old just so I could do my demonstration.
40
But then here's the other thing so
41
that you don't have to worry about getting rid of something
42
that you might still want is to have some kind of Rubbermaid tote plastic container,
43
cardboard boxes work great, anything like that.
44
So what we're going to do is we're going to put the stuff
45
that we decide we're not going to use right now into there
46
and we're going to just set it aside to see if we do end up needing some of it.
47
And so like I mentioned before, kids are pretty predictable.
48
They like to wear the same things over and over again.
49
So you probably have a good idea of what it is that your kids will be wanting to wear.
50
And so all I'm going to do is I'm going to dump out all these clothes.
51
Now if you're wondering how much clothing do my kids really need,
52
for us the magic number is five.
53
Five bottoms, five tops, and then a couple long sleeve or sweatshirt tops.
54
For this time of year it's winter.
55
We're in Minnesota.
56
We do layers a lot.
57
And so but five bottoms,
58
five tops, and then I always make sure within that is one nice outfit for church.
59
I do not mind if my kids wear the same outfit to church every week.
60
You might want two outfits if that's your thing.
61
Now that our girl's a little bit older,
62
they care more about clothes.
63
They have a few outfits probably
64
that are nice enough to wear to church on the weekends and they get to pick that out themselves.
65
So here's the trick though.
66
This is what I would do in the past, right?
67
I would hold up these pants and I'd be like,
68
okay, should we keep them?
69
Should I get rid of them?
70
Should I donate them?
71
Should I pass them on to our nieces and nephews that could possibly wear them, right?
72
And I would go through piece by piece saying,
73
should I keep this and should I not?
74
And then inevitably what would happen is be like,
75
they might wear it again, right?
76
So I put it on the keep pile
77
and then I get through everything and my keep pile is still three quarters of what I had to start with.
78
And I don't feel like I made any progress and it took like three hours.
79
So here's what we're going to do instead.
80
This is the approach that works the simplest for me.
81
And remember, we're not donating it or throwing it away or anything like that yet.
82
So don't worry about making mistakes because we can make adjustments down the road if you need to.
83
So here's what I'm going to do.
84
I'm going to say, okay,
85
five bottoms for my three-year-old.
86
He wears these a lot.
87
These can go to church.
88
Jeans are nice.
89
They're versatile.
90
I try to pick solid colors.
91
We wear a lot of sweatpants around the house because they're just comfortable.
92
They're three, right?
93
So I have three pairs of pants.
94
Here's another pair.
95
These are really warm.
96
I like him to have those and his darker jeans.
97
Five pairs of pants, done, right?
98
Into my key basket.
99
All right, five tops.
100
I like this long sleeve shirt.
101
Long sleeve shirts are great this time of year.
102
Another long sleeve top.
103
And then we need a couple of t-shirts that he can layer under things.
104
So I'm just going to pick out, this is a polo.
105
He likes this.
106
It has motorcycles on it.
107
Um, ones that I think kind of are the most versatile, cutest.
108
Um, maybe I paid the most for,
109
so I for sure want to see him wear it more before he grows out of it.
110
So let's see, four, five.
111
Okay.
112
So I have five tops.
113
I have two long sleeve shirts and two short sleeve shirts.
114
And then there can be some wiggle room, right?
115
So again, Minnesota layers, I'm going to pull out two hooded sweatshirts.
116
so here's one hooded sweatshirt and well this is a sweatshirt
117
but it's not hooded so that's great for layering as well done right
118
so what I'm going to do now this is his new limited wardrobe
119
and we're just going to try this out for a while
120
and all these clothes I'm going to stick into the bin to keep okay
121
so here's what we're left with I have the bin of his new limited wardrobe
122
and what we're going to do is we're just going to try this out for a week
123
or two and see how it goes it takes a little bit of time to adjust to it.
124
For me, when I finally did take the plunge to simplifying clothes,
125
what I noticed was it didn't feel like there was laundry all over our house anymore.
126
It was always all over the kids' bedroom floors.
127
It was all over the laundry room
128
and in the bathroom then in laundry baskets and I didn't know
129
if it was clean or if it was dirty
130
and it was piled on the couch because it needed to be folded
131
and so what the biggest benefit for us has been of simplifying
132
that the kids wardrobe is that there just isn't
133
so much laundry in the house and I do have to do laundry more often
134
which I've worked into my schedule it's really not a big
135
deal I try to do a load of laundry a day for our family of six and it works out great.
136
But again, the good part is we still have this bin over here that has all of the extra stuff.
137
So if you need to pull something out of it or if you accidentally packed away one of their favorite things,
138
it's still there.
139
It hasn't gone anywhere yet.
140
And then once you have a level of comfort with their new pared down wardrobe,
141
then you can decide what to do with that.
142
If you want to donate it,
143
give it to another family,
144
you know, that could make use of it.
145
I think one of the biggest things,
146
maybe that stands in the way is
147
if you like for your kids to look really cute
148
and trendy all the time I would say
149
that I kind of fall in the middle between dressing my kids really fashionable
150
and putting a lot of time
151
and effort into their outfits to not caring I fall somewhere in the middle I think it's fun
152
when they all match all four of them
153
which can be a little bit of a chore
154
but sometimes for you know church I'll I'll do that
155
but a lot of the time I you know
156
if we're just around the house if we're just going to preschool
157
and that kind of thing I don't put as much effort into it it doesn't bother me if they're wearing
158
the same thing day after day.
159
But honestly, nobody notices.
160
No one's ever said anything like that to me that they've noticed my kids don't have an extensive wardrobe.
161
So it might not be as noticeable as you think.
162
So certainly let me know if you have questions,
163
please leave them in the comments and I will answer them.
164
As always, I will link to other related posts like my laundry system.
165
For example, I'm not going to fold any of this.
166
It just goes in the bin after it comes out the dryer
167
and that's what I do and it keeps the laundry a lot simpler
168
and a lot easier to do so I'll link to
169
that below as well and good luck on your journey I would love to hear how it goes
