1
Okay, today I am answering the question I always get asked.
2
How do I speak English fluently without thinking?
3
Is it even possible?
4
And the answer is yes, absolutely.
5
And today I'm going to show you exactly how to do it.
6
First, let's talk about why you think so much when you're speaking English.
7
It's not because you're bad at English,
8
it's because your brain is having to do too much work.
9
You're trying to juggle grammar rules,
10
translate from your native language,
11
remember vocabulary, and think of the next sentence all at the same time.
12
That's like trying to cook dinner while reading during an earthquake.
13
Fluent speakers don't do that.
14
Fluent speakers use automatic language.
15
Their brain retrieves English in the same way that you retrieve your native language instantly.
16
So the real goal here is not necessarily to learn more English,
17
it's to make the English you already know more automatic.
18
So let me give you some great techniques to make your English more automatic.
19
Okay, technique number one.
20
Stop thinking word by word and start thinking in sections.
21
Small ready-made pieces of language that you can memorize as one unit.
22
Yes, of course, it's very good to know lots of words but it's much better to learn phrases,
23
sentences and sections.
24
It will make your speaking faster,
25
more natural and way easier.
26
So let's look at some ready-made sentences you can add to your vocabulary.
27
Repeat after me.
28
To be honest, here's the thing.
29
What I mean is, The point is,
30
if you think about it,
31
as far as I know,
32
at the moment, from my point of you believe it
33
or not i'm going to teach you the next technique
34
while i get ready so this technique is called the five second rule the rule is simple
35
when someone asks you a question in english answer within five seconds even
36
if it isn't perfect yes mistakes will get made
37
but we're not trying to reach perfection right now we're trying
38
to encourage our brain to speed up the output relying on
39
the knowledge you already have this forces your brain to stop translating
40
and it stops you overthinking and pausing for example
41
if i ask what did you do yesterday don't pause
42
and think for 20 seconds just say something it might not be great english
43
but don't worry about that right now Even if it's just something really simple like I went to work,
44
I went to the shops, I watched TV.
45
It's not amazing English, you don't sound like a poet but at least it's automatic,
46
at least it's quick.
47
You know this is not the exercise for developing your vocabulary or perfecting your grammar,
48
this is just an exercise to speed up the process of thinking, translating and speaking.
49
So just say something.
50
Okay, all done.
51
Let's practice.
52
I will ask you some questions.
53
I want you to pause the video and answer straight away.
54
Here we go.
55
What is your favourite thing about your job?
56
What do you think of dogs?
57
Describe the town or city you live in?
58
What would be your dream holiday?
59
What were you best at at school?
60
The next technique is shadowing.
61
Shadowing is when you listen to a native speaker and repeat them, like a shadow.
62
You can shadow movie scenes,
63
podcasts, YouTube videos like this one, audiobooks.
64
It can be anyone, as long as you're shadowing someone whose voice you like.
65
Shadowing improves pronunciation, rhythm, sentence structure,
66
speed, and most importantly, confidence.
67
Try it like this.
68
Find someone who speaks in a way you really like.
69
Listen to them saying one sentence,
70
pause, and then repeat it instantly.
71
Even if you don't know the meaning of all the words.
72
Repeat it exactly with the same speed, rhythm, intonation and tone.
73
And once you feel confident with that,
74
then you can look up the words you don't know to expand your vocabulary.
75
So let's try this technique together.
76
I will show you how I would do it
77
and it'll just give you an idea of the kind of thing I mean.
78
So who shall we shadow?
79
Oh, let's shadow Emma Watson.
80
Emma Watson is very popular with my students.
81
Lots of people want to sound like her.
82
So let's try Emma Watson.
83
Hi, I'm Emma Watson and I'm headed to London.
84
Hi, I'm Emma Watson and I'm headed to London.
85
There we go.
86
I've copied the ups and downs.
87
Exactly like that.
88
Let's hear another sentence.
89
You know, you never know when you're going to need just a quick,
90
straight glass of gin.
91
You never know when you're going to need a quick,
92
straight glass of gin.
93
You might have to listen to sentences a couple of times to remember what she's saying
94
or you can write it down before you say it.
95
Whatever works for you.
96
And this is what I have with me when I'm at the airport.
97
This is what I have with me when I go to the airport.
98
So that's the idea.
99
Take it slowly.
100
Don't worry if you're not very good at it to begin with.
101
It takes a little bit of practice.
102
Here's another simple but powerful exercise.
103
Narrate your life in English.
104
During your morning, say things like I'm pouring the filtered water into the kettle.
105
I'm closing the lid of the kettle and turning on the kettle.
106
I'm opening the cupboard and I'm grabbing a mug.
107
I'm grabbing the jar with the tea bags in.
108
I'm opening the jar and grabbing a tea bag.
109
I'm placing the tea bag in the mug.
110
You can do this out loud or in your head if you're in public.
111
I need to catch the bus.
112
Oh, I'm late.
113
I really hope it's not crowded.
114
By doing this, you're training your brain to think in English in everyday life,
115
creating a constant stream of English rather than only using it when you have a lesson.
116
You will never be able to speak English without thinking if you only speak English in a controlled environment like a lesson.
117
bring English into your everyday life make it just a part
118
of your routine make it as normal as brushing your teeth
119
or getting in a shower that's where you'll see real progress
120
the next technique I want to share with you is based off an old radio show called just a minute
121
and I have memories of sitting in the back of the car
122
while my mum was driving and she would listen to this and I would kind of fall asleep while listening to it.
123
And the concept is you are given a topic,
124
maybe a word or a topic of some kind,
125
and you have to talk about that topic for a minute.
126
And you are not allowed to hesitate or repeat yourself or stop talking, basically.
127
So that's the challenge.
128
You have to say something new.
129
You can't pause.
130
You can't think for too long.
131
I think they allow two seconds of thinking time maybe.
132
And this is an excellent activity to do
133
if you are serious about speaking English without thinking because you've got that pressure of,
134
oh my goodness, I have to keep talking.
135
Just talk.
136
Even if mistakes get made,
137
even if you say ridiculous stuff,
138
it doesn't matter right now.
139
You are training your brain to just get words out no matter what.
140
I'm going to do it for you to show you that it's possible.
141
I'm not saying I'm going to be good at this.
142
It's hard.
143
It's really difficult, but I want to give you an idea.
144
Okay, I'm going to set a timer for one minute and I'm going to talk about golf.
145
I know nothing about golf,
146
but I'm going to try to talk about golf for one minute.
147
Go.
148
Golf is a very interesting sport.
149
I think it has its history in Scotland.
150
There seems to be a big link between Scotland and golf
151
and I'm not quite sure why because I'm not massively into it
152
but I know a lot of men stereotypically get involved in
153
golf although a lot of women play golf now as well
154
which is fantastic but when I picture a golf club I picture retired people
155
because they have more time to go and enjoy that sport
156
and I think a lot of footballers enjoy golf as well
157
because it's so different to football because you can just switch off.
158
It's still very physical so you're walking around,
159
you're using your muscles, you're not just sitting down.
160
So I think a lot of footballers enjoy being physical but without the pressure and the speed that football comes at.
161
But personally I've never played golf.
162
I think I would be truly horrific if I ever tried.
163
One minute!
164
That wasn't so bad.
165
So notice when I did that, I wasn't speaking quickly.
166
I didn't do, golf is a crazy thing and golf is blah blah blah.
167
Calm.
168
You can speak slowly.
169
You can take your time.
170
That is allowed.
171
You don't have to speak really, really quickly.
172
So try it.
173
See what happens.
174
I promise you, if you can do that once a day,
175
so one minute every day, so good, so good.
176
And the last technique I want to tell you about is probably my favourite one.
177
Oh, is this the swap it or describe it rule?
178
You bet it is.
179
So the swap it or describe it rule is basically,
180
when you're speaking and you forget a word,
181
don't think about that word for more than three seconds.
182
If you can't think of the word in three seconds,
183
either swap the word for something different,
184
or try to describe the word that you can't remember.
185
For example, imagine you're speaking about driving and you forget the word for motorway.
186
You can either swap it for the American word,
187
highway, or you can swap it for the German word, autobahn.
188
Or if that fails, describe it.
189
The big road where cars go fast.
190
Or let's say you forget the word profession.
191
You can't think about that word for more than three seconds,
192
but you can swap it for job or career,
193
or you could describe it,
194
that thing you go to every day and you get paid for it.
195
Don't worry about sounding stupid.
196
This is all about practicing flow and building momentum.
197
And there you go.
198
I hope at least one of those techniques will be useful for you.
199
Try them out.
200
Maybe one of them will be completely useless,
201
but the other one will be really really useful for you so try see.
202
The most important thing is that you keep talking,
203
you will never get better at speaking English if you don't speak English,
204
that is the moral of the story.

  • As far as I know(据我所知): 表达不确定性和个人的见解,常用于讨论中。
  • If you think about it(如果你仔细想想): 这是一个引导听众思考的精彩开场白。

将这些句式融入您的口语练习中,您会发现自己说得更加流利。在练习时,您还可以运用雅思口语练习的方法,逐渐让这些表达变得自动化。

常见的发音陷阱

在视频中,一些单词和短语可能会对学习者造成发音上的困难。以下是一些需要特别注意的地方:

  • Hello /həˈloʊ/: 注意元音的发音,保持清晰。
  • Think /θɪŋk/: 确保清楚地发出“th”这个音,避免发成其他音。
  • Speed up /spiːd ʌp/:
