1
All right, Tony, thank you.
2
Well, it's a busy time of year right now.
3
We've got the World Cup schools are letting out too, and that typically means more time outdoors.
4
So we spoke with one expert on some tips to keep in mind with the summer heat.
5
Now upon us, meteorologist Steven Matrigrano joins us with what you should know.
6
Whether it's the beach, a concert, a ball game or anything outdoors, you'll want to make sure you take care of yourself first when it comes to the heat.
7
Preparation is key.
8
So if you're going to a sporting event or even just outside, you should check the forecast.
9
What's going on now?
10
What's happening in the next few days?
11
You should be well hydrated, not only before an event, but during.
12
Maggie Morrissey-Bassler, an assistant professor with the Department of Health Sciences at Providence College, says in addition to hydrating, protect yourself from the sun, too.
13
Wear a hat, protect yourself by wearing sunscreen and light clothing, and make sure that if you're at an event,
14
you're taking the cooling infrastructure or leveraging that.
15
This time of year, your chance of heat stroke and heat exhaustion increases.
16
Heat stroke is a medical emergency.
17
And so if someone's having a heat stroke, it's because their core temperature is above 104.
18
And they're presenting with what we call central nervous system dysfunction.
19
So they're either unconscious, they have very bizarre behavior.
20
Heat exhaustion is when your core temperature is below that 104.
21
But you're still getting these signs and symptoms like, you know, fatigue or, you know, feeling really tired or, you know, potentially dizzy dizzy.
22
Overall, experts say to enjoy the outdoors and the nice weather, but take care of yourself in the process.
23
And remember, when the summer heat is in full force, it's always good to check on your neighbors and the elderly.
