1
Hello and welcome to The Telescope.
2
Every week we bring you a fresh insight from the biggest car market in the world.
3
Some viewers have noticed that I haven't reviewed Xpunt products for a while and that's because of this car,
4
the Xpunt GX, and it's not because of its range of a wannabe exterior design.
5
Because on this channel we have reviewed a fair amount of Porsche Taycan wannabes It's its lack of originality in design.
6
Is this a Porsche Taycan copycat?
7
It's hard to say it isn't.
8
And Ferrari Puro Sangue wannabes.
9
Is this a Ferrari Puro Sangue copycat?
10
It's definitely got clues.
11
A lack of design originality, as long as I get to point them out without getting sued, is not a problem for me.
12
However, when X-Pone released a picture of this car's interior back in April, I posted this on Weibo.
13
I'm going to say it if no one else dares to point out.
14
The X-Point GX interior is much worse than even the Envo L90.
15
A bit of context here.
16
At that phase, the public anticipation of the X-Point GX is for it to come up against the likes of Auto M9,
17
Li-Auto L9, Neo ES9 and Zika 9X.
18
Much more expensive than what it eventually turned out to be.
19
So me comparing this car's interior saying it's much worse than Envo L90, which is a much cheaper car,
20
understandably offended quite some people.
21
I was told this post was passed around among Xpon's PR team.
22
And three hours later, Xpon's marketing VP posted pictures of this car's interior in white.
23
And he says those pictures were from other journalists in a WeChat group.
24
which is quite odd because at that time those pictures were still under embargo.
25
I wonder who would just carelessly send them around in a WeChat group.
26
Anyway, overwhelmingly the comments under that post were all like this is so much better than their brown interior.
27
What does this tell you? That I was right.
28
This is clearly going to be a negative review of the X-Pont GX
29
and as a former pr worked in a car manufacturer i
30
know the first step of dealing with any negative press is
31
always check the plate is this car from our media fleet
32
who gave him the car don't worry expert pr nobody's head is gonna fall here this is a rental
33
but sitting here i'm still stunned first of all the steering wheel adjustment range is
34
so small that i wonder if it's broken with this particular car
35
This is the total amount that you can move the wheel up and down.
36
This is the top position.
37
This is the bottom position.
38
I mean, is this a joke?
39
I don't know if you can tell from that kind of distance.
40
We'll give you some close-up to show you how unbelievably small this adjustment range is.
41
Forwards and backwards are fine.
42
You see, it can go all the way back to the IP.
43
and we've tested if we push the wheel back into the IP, will that give us more range moving the wheel up and down?
44
No, this is the total range of the steering wheel moving up and down.
45
And just to show you, I'm not picking up on this car.
46
I mentioned steering wheel adjustment range in almost every dynamic review.
47
Here, just to quote a few.
48
First of all, a four-way adjustable steering wheel in this range is an advantage.
49
Steering wheel sticks out just at the right position.
50
For context, this is the steering wheel adjustment range of this L90.
51
Still going.
52
Now we go up.
53
Look at this.
54
By the way, my Envo L90 has a totally original design, doesn't copy any other cars, has a fine looking interior,
55
lines that match with each other, and ambient lighting that feels nice and warm.
56
I have to show you the ambient lighting on this.
57
I don't normally review this part of the car, but when we were doing the car-to-car shots the other day, I drove this through a long tunnel,
58
and when the ambient lighting came on, it gave me a proper scare.
59
It's like this.
60
This is how the ambient lighting was when it first delivered to me.
61
Pulsing mode in red.
62
Oh my goodness.
63
I know everything I said so far are totally subjective, so somebody somewhere must think, this all looks fine, what is the problem?
64
But my expectation of the GX is that this must be a step up from the X9,
65
which by the way is also a completely original design doesn't copy anyone,
66
has a fine looking interior and with ambient lighting that doesn't cause people tripophobia.
67
To be honest, between the Xpeng X9 and my Envoy L90, their interior are quite close.
68
But between this and my Envoy L90, I think I've made my opinions quite clear.
69
Dynamically, this is also a problem which I have mentioned in previous Xpeng reviews, Which means this image is somehow behind the car in front of me,
70
but I can still see it.
71
You know, it's a very weird sensation.
72
That is, the projecting distance of this HUD is too long.
73
To the point that now in stop and go traffic, we are stuck in a traffic jam,
74
the image projected by the HUD is behind the back of the car directly in front of you.
75
Now, that sentence is difficult to understand.
76
I'll repeat that.
77
The HOD image projected is behind, is further ahead than the back of the car directly in front of us.
78
I know that's quite difficult to understand and may not be fully understandable even if I show you the image, which is a 2D image without depth information.
79
However, it's just very distracting.
80
On this X-Punk GX, it's been exacerbated by this car's less than perfect pitch control.
81
That is, this car is nodding its head a lot, even on quite smooth surfaces.
82
Now, while this pitch control is less than ideal, it's not a huge problem, actually.
83
And if it wasn't for the HUD, the combination of the HUD and this pitch control problem, I probably won't even mention this in the review.
84
So to fully understand what I'm talking about, I need a walkie-talkie.
85
Now imagine this walkie-talkie is the car itself.
86
When I say pitch, I mean the car is constantly doing this on the road.
87
Now while this is annoying, it's not a huge problem,
88
but combine that with the ultra-long-throw HOD is like adding this walkie-talkie to this antenna.
89
Now imagine this is the projecting distance of that HUD.
90
So now when the car is doing this, the driver's eye are forced to stare at the long end of this HUD,
91
which means I'm staring at an image is pitching so much,
92
so much more than what the nose is pitching because of this added distance.
93
And that is why I could get very easily get carsick driving the X-Pont GX,
94
and I never get carsick in any car if I'm the driver.
95
However, I should mention the plus side of having such a long projecting distance is that in scenarios like navigation,
96
the arrows can generate some depth.
97
So that's more intuitive than a very close projecting distance HUD.
98
However, as things stand right now, I'll say it's not completely positive.
99
And in most case scenarios, it's more distracting than it's being helpful.
100
Now, enough of the bad stuff.
101
This Xpon GX technically is quite strong.
102
If you look at the spec sheet, of course it is.
103
It's a 2026 Xpon.
104
It's 800 volt.
105
It's got a really long range and really fast charging battery.
106
And it runs Xpon's in-house ADAS chip.
107
The car we're driving here today is the Ultra SE which has two of the so-called Turing chip.
108
Combined you're looking at 1500 terrobs of computing power.
109
And when I offended some Xpon fanatics back in April, the popular line to get back at me is to say
110
that the NIO ES8 ADAS performance is much worse than even the MONA MO3.
111
So NIO ES8 is a very expensive car, MONA MO3 is an entry-level X-Pump.
112
And that was true back then.
113
But now, my Envo L90 runs NIO's in-house ADAS chip,
114
the NX9031, essentially the same hardware and software stack as the much more expensive ES8 and ES9.
115
And I need to make one thing clear, I'm not trying to be an ADAS expert, okay?
116
Nowadays in China, it's quite risky to run any kind of scientific ADAS test.
117
So the route I'm showing you is my daily commute.
118
This is how I commute between my office and home.
119
And during the week I switched between the GX and this L90,
120
I haven't spotted anything to differentiate these two.
121
It's not like two years ago, it's the difference between 50 out of 100 and 75 out of 100.
122
Now it's between 80 and 85
123
and to spot those differences you have to be an ADAS expert
124
and i'm not i'm just saying from my perspective i know this road really well i know
125
when to switch lane
126
which is the slightly faster way both of these systems are still slower than how i drive manually
127
but they are very close to each other now i should
128
mention just before the filming of this video xpone released a new version of its ada software
129
which the first thing you is the upgrade of the new model model.
130
September the 3rd, the ADAS performance between X-Pen and Envo is neck and neck.
131
Are there things that the GX does better than the Envo L90?
132
Of course there are.
133
First of all, this car has dual chamber airsprings, which means the air suspension in this has two stages of stiffness.
134
The Envo L90 is single chamber airsprings.
135
But I can't really feel this benefit because that single chamber air spring on the Envoy L90 is really well judged.
136
To the point, I don't really change it between different modes that much.
137
The one thing I can feel this has a significant advantage over the L90 is that this car has rear wheel steering.
138
Now, I haven't felt the L90 feels cumbersome on the road.
139
However, all things considered, I will say rear wheel steering is the one thing I wish Envoy L90 has, but it doesn't.
140
And X-Pontooned this rear wheel steering really well.
141
The way this car generates yaw is not intrusive at all, even if you're sitting in the second row.
142
And that's quite rare to see.
143
You know, I've said other rear wheel steering systems could feel intrusive.
144
It generates unnaturally.
145
The way it generates yaw feels unnatural.
146
This doesn't have that.
147
So rear wheel steering is a major plus point Secondly, the NVH of this car is quite good We are now
148
travelling at 85 kph This car's NVH currently feels on par with my Envoy L90
149
But I will give the win to X-Pump
150
Because the car we are driving here today This car is on 21 inch wheel
151
And my Envoy L90 is on 20 inch wheel So wheel is smaller and my car has much thicker sidewall than this.
152
Both of those two things help to achieve good NVH.
153
So if this GX on 21-inch wheel matches my L90 on 20-inch wheel, then I will give the win to X-Punk.
154
Practicality-wise, my Envo L90 wins despite being 125mm shorter.
155
Now experienced telescope viewer at this point should already know what I'm about to say because it doesn't have an engine.
156
The front is set to my driving position.
157
I'm someone who like to sit very tight in the driver's seat so consider this as one of the best case scenarios.
158
So I've left about this much knee room for the second row.
159
Now let's go to the third row.
160
I don't really fit.
161
My left leg fits, but my right leg don't really.
162
My knee is up against the back of the second row seat.
163
Here the front is set to my driving position.
164
The second row is set to the default three-row mode in the infotainment.
165
So this is what Envo thinks where the second row seat should be
166
if you want to sit people in the third row.
167
And you can see it gives me more knee room than what I gave to the Xpunt GX on the second row.
168
Now let's go to the third row.
169
And you can see both my left and right knee fits very comfortably.
170
My right knee is not even touching the back of the
171
second row seat is this is comfortably bigger than the X-Punt GX.
172
Here in the boot, this has X-Punt's party trick.
173
The third row seat is going to first fold forwards and then fold all the way back into this trunk,
174
forming a completely flat load floor.
175
This is quite neat.
176
You know, Envo L90's boot is not as big as this, even counting the underfloor storage.
177
however boots on a car this big might not be
178
that easy to use all the time here we are parked next to a Toyota Camry
179
so a completely normal size car you can still open a tailgate on this car
180
but it's gonna be this tight and I'm quite skinny you know
181
if you're chubbier than me then and you could get stuck.
182
This is when the frunk comes into its own.
183
And we are parking next to another car.
184
Imagine if this is the wall, or if it's just like this, you cannot open the tailgate.
185
You're gonna have to move the car forward to access the boot.
186
This is when you need a frunk.
187
You also can't really use the boot of this L90, But on this car, we have the frunk.
188
And this is where the frunk becomes very useful.
189
I don't even know what I'm storing here.
190
Okay, just a box of water, my tennis shoe, and my briefcase.
191
This is so much easier to use than a boot, however big that might be.
192
This GX also has a frunk, but you can see the comparison between this and the Envo L90 is quite substantial.
193
This is where the engine sits in the range extender version.
194
To be fair, this is one of the bigger boots on cars
195
that are trying to incorporate BEV and range extender on the same chassis.
196
But this is the price you have to pay for doing that.
197
Then on this BEV version, some space is gonna be wasted and the front cannot be as optimized as the Envo L90.
198
And also to Xpunt's surprise, so far the vast majority of the Xpunt GX is sold in BEV form.
199
Xpunt originally expected more people will choose the range extender version, but at least in China, they're not.
200
So back in April, when I first posted that Weibo post criticizing this car's interior, Xpunt fanatics were raving.
201
How dare you compare the Xpunt GX to the Envo L90?
202
Well, now you see, it's clearly not a rival to the likes of Auto M9, the Auto L9, Neo ES9 or even the ES8.
203
Its identically priced rival is the Envil L90 and it's still not getting many favours.
204
Some people might ask, having done such a punchy review on the X-Pont GX, do I want to be blacklisted by X-Pont forever?
205
Well, of course not.
206
I've borrowed the Mona L03 from them and it's quite good.
207
And I already have a title of that review.
208
Why I resumed reviewing Xpom products.
209
That is all from The Telescope today.

关于本课

您正在使用跟读技巧通过视频"Why I Stopped Reviewing Cars from XPeng - XPeng GX Review"练习英语口语和发音。
