1
Why can so many students understand English, but they can't speak?
2
This is a problem that honestly most of my students in my club face.
3
And to explain why this happens and how you can fix this, I want to give you an analogy.
4
Imagine you go to the gym four times a week.
5
and at the gym, you only train your arms.
6
You never train your legs.
7
You just train your arms.
8
What's going to happen after a few months?
9
You're going to have very strong arms, but your legs probably won't be that strong.
10
And it's the same with speaking.
11
If you don't speak, if you just listen to English speakers, but you never speak, obviously your speaking is going to be weak.
12
So that's the source of this problem.
13
That's where it comes from.
14
And the solution is quite obvious.
15
The solution is to speak more.
16
It's just like training a muscle at the gym.
17
It's just like training your legs or your arms.
18
The more you do it, the stronger it will become.
19
So if you're facing this problem, if you're having problems speaking, even though you can understand native speakers,
20
then I want you to make an effort to speak.
21
Even if you feel nervous to speak, even if you feel like people are judging you.
22
You still need to speak.
23
Language, or English rather, is a language and languages need to be spoken.
24
If you don't speak a language, you're never going to become fluent.
25
So if there's just one thing that you change,
26
one thing that you do to overcome this problem, it needs to be speaking,
27
communicating, having conversations with people.
28
I'm going to give you the analogy of the gym.
29
I mentioned this earlier, right?
30
Going to the gym, training your muscles, becoming stronger.
31
Honestly, it's the same when you learn a language.
32
When you first go to the gym, you're probably going to feel weak.
33
You might even feel self-conscious.
34
You might feel like you don't know what you're doing.
35
but after time as time goes by the more you do
36
it the stronger you will become the more confident you will feel
37
and the more you will improve it's the same with learning english
38
when you first have a conversation with somebody maybe you're at a1 you're at a2 you're not very advanced,
39
you're going to feel nervous.
40
You're going to struggle to find the right words to say.
41
It's completely normal.
42
But if you stick with it, if you keep speaking, even if you don't feel like it,
43
eventually you're going to feel more confident.
44
Eventually you're going to feel more comfortable speaking and eventually you're going to become more fluent.
45
It's very very simple.
46
So this is something that I recommend to my students all the time.
47
You need to speak.
48
Just speak.
49
Don't overcomplicate things.
50
You don't need to make it more difficult than it should be.
51
English is a language languages need to be spoken.
52
Now a lot of students feel like native speakers are judging them when they speak.
53
They're worried that people are going to think less of them maybe because they make a mistake.
54
They forget a word.
55
They use something incorrectly.
56
And I understand your fear because honestly I thought the same when I was learning German,
57
when I was studying Italian, I was scared to speak, especially with native speakers, because I was worried they were judging me.
58
I expected that I had to be perfect.
59
That was something that I struggled with.
60
I'm a perfectionist.
61
I always want to be perfect.
62
But you have to keep in mind that most native speakers aren't judging you when you speak English.
63
Seriously, most native speakers are not judging you.
64
And if you don't believe me, I want you to ask yourself this question.
65
Would you judge somebody learning your language?
66
If you're like most people, you wouldn't.
67
you'd actually be impressed.
68
You'd be proud of them.
69
You'd want to encourage them.
70
And English speakers are no different.
71
Native English speakers appreciate it when you make an effort to learn English.
72
Now, obviously, there are some people who will judge you.
73
That's the case anywhere in life.
74
And you have to do your best to ignore these people.
75
okay you should not let them discourage you they're just negative
76
people right i'm sure you've experienced people like this maybe english speakers but maybe speakers of your own language
77
so again those are a very small minority of people
78
if you can ignore them if you can forget about them then that's really going to help you.
79
But 99.9% of English speakers are not judging you for making mistakes.
80
And honestly, English speakers make mistakes speaking English.
81
This is something I see all the time.
82
Maybe you've seen native speakers use double negatives.
83
For example, I don't know nothing.
84
I don't know nothing.
85
This is wrong in English.
86
We have to say I don't know anything, okay?
87
Native speakers get this wrong all the time.
88
So just because somebody is a native English speaker doesn't mean they speak perfectly.
89
If you're a perfectionist, if you always want to speak perfectly, I completely understand you because I'm the exact same way.
90
But you have to try to let this go.
91
Because being a perfectionist is going to prevent you from improving.
92
It's going to prevent you from speaking.
93
And if you don't speak, as we talked about earlier, you're never going to become fluent.
94
So live in the moment.
95
When you're in a conversation with somebody, when you're talking to a friend or a native speaker, don't think about grammar.
96
Don't think about conjugations.
97
Just open your mouth and speak.
98
You can worry about grammar later.
99
But in the moment, in the conversation, your priority should be speaking.
100
Just opening your mouth and speaking.
101
That's the key.
102
Remember, the purpose of language is communication.
103
It's not perfection, it's communication.
104
So if you can express your ideas, if you can communicate what you want to say, you're doing fine.
105
And if you keep doing this, if you keep getting into conversation with people in English,
106
eventually you will improve.
107
Eventually you will become fluent.
108
It's a slow process.
109
You have to be patient, but it is possible.
110
We are human beings.
111
We are designed to learn language.
112
So don't worry if you feel discouraged, if you feel unmotivated.
113
It's completely normal.
114
It happened to me when I was learning German, when I was learning Italian.
115
But stick with it.
116
Trust the process.
117
Believe in yourself and keep speaking.
118
Eventually you will improve.
119
Eventually you will become fluent.

- Why can't I speak English? (我为什么说不出英语?)
- I need to practice speaking. (我需要练习口语。)
- Can you help me? (你能帮我吗?)
- I'm getting better at speaking. (我的口语越来越好了。)
- Let's have a conversation.
