This was it, the moment I had dreamed of for years.

Thousands of glowing lanterns rising into the night sky, complete stillness, a deep breath, and then magic.

You don't just see it, you feel it.

And yes, it was even better than I imagined.

Hi, I'm Marie from Sunsets and Speakeasies, and this is our experience at the Yiping Lantern Festival in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

The real behind the scenes, what's it like, what we wish we knew

and how to make the most of it if you're planning to go in 2025.

Let's start from the beginning.

While we were travelling through Asia, we met a friend who casually mentioned she had already bought her tickets for the Lantern Festival six months in advance.

That was my sign.

I turned to Dustin and said, we're doing this.

and what better way to celebrate my birthday than releasing a lantern into the sky in Chiang Mai.

We tried booking through the official website but it was already sold out.

Thankfully we found tickets on Eventbrite after some researching.

So if this is on your bucket list, don't wait.

Tickets sell out quickly and for 2025 the festival will take place on November 5th and 6th.

I'll link the official event page in the description below so you can grab your spot.

We went in 2024, but the event happens every year in November.

My advice, arrive in Chiang Mai a few days early.

So now we're in Chiang Mai.

We're going to the Leds Festival.

This is a big, big deal.

Very big deal.

It is pretty expensive, but I think it's worth it.

Yeah, it's one time a year here in Chiang Mai

and traffic is insane everywhere like we couldn't get a grab

from the from the airport yesterday we had to bribe someone

to take us after about an hour there it's crazy

so I think one tip is at least come a couple days before

but now we are on our way to the bus station

bus area pick up pick up spot for the VIP tickets

that we got it is a bus that takes us right to the area we need to go

and they're meeting in front of a mall, which looks very Western here in Chiang Mai.

So that's what we're doing.

We booked VIP tickets, which gave us decent seating and slightly better food options.

But if we were to do it again, we'll splurge on the elite tickets.

They come with smoother transfers, elevated seats and honestly the best view.

You're further at the back from the temple

but seeing the full wave of lanterns blowing up into the sky from the distance chills.

Now the journey to get to the event grounds is a journey itself.

It starts at a mall in Chiang Mai where you check in and wait to board vans.

We arrived about 30 minutes early thinking we'll relax in the air con and casually line up after.

Big mistake.

When we stepped outside we saw a massive snaking line of people.

It was hot, human and a bit chaotic.

And what was this line for?

Just a sticker.

Not even your ticket.

Just sticker that tells them which van you'll ride on.

Once you finally get the sticker, you join another line for the actual van.

Pro tip, wear a hat, sunscreen, bring water and an umbrella.

The wait is long and there's very little shade.

The weather is humid, hot summer heat.

Okay so we're finally here.

It was a very long trek like what three hours of lining up

and then one hour of a car ride at least one hour

and now we gotta line up to go get our lanterns

I've estimated there's about 1200 vans here each hold about eight to nine people plus buses like big buses

but it's beautiful so far with sunset okay now we're off to get our lanterns Bye!

Pro tip, you don't return on the same van

so don't stress about remembering your van's number but do keep the van sticker, it will help you on your return.

Once we arrived at the festival grounds there was another line to get your official entry ticket and wristband.

But once you're in, that's where the magic starts.

The festival grounds are full of energy and culture.

traditional music, crafts, floating flower rituals, further ops, and people in beautiful traditional clothing.

It's a feast for the senses.

Take your time exploring before heading into the food zone, which is separate by ticket level.

We quickly realized we didn't have much time to wait in line for food.

We grabbed tiny bites of pizza and snacks but honestly we should have eaten before we left the city.

So that's my next pro tip.

Eat before you go or pack something easy to snack on.

As the sun starts to set there's a gentle call for everyone to head to their seats.

That's where the mood completely shifts.

Suddenly it's quiet, peaceful.

The monks from the temple begin a slow ceremony and you realize you're about to be a part of something deeply special.

Each person gets two lanterns.

The monks lights the first ceremony lantern and then the staff come around to help you light yours.

Be careful here, fluff out your lanterns first, have two people hold it at each end and wait for the heat to rise.

Don't let it go too early or it won't fly.

Worse, it could catch on fire.

The staff are quick to assist but it's better to get it right the first time.

We waited to light our first one until a bunch were already in the sky and it was magical.

For our second, we waited until the fireworks started and in that moment,

standing beside Dustin, watching thousands of glowing lanterns flood up into the night with fireworks all around us.

It honestly felt like something out of Tangled.

You know, the scene where Rapunzel and Flynn are in the boat surrounded by lanterns.

Yeah, it was that, but real romantic, surreal, emotional, unforgettable.

I'm not

We were so caught up in the moment we barely got the shots we wanted

but honestly that's okay It's not about the photos.

It's about being there when you feel like most lanterns have been released

and the sky is glowing That's your cue to leave a

little early It will help you avoid the crowd crash

and give you a chance to get those dreamy lantern shots from a distance.

Head back to the parking area.

It's first come first serve where the staff will direct you back to the vans based on your sticker.

And once you're back at the drop off point in the city, don't expect to get a grab or taxi easily.

because we're hungry okay pro tip book your accommodation close to the drop-off point

or near the city center it will save you a lot of frustration

and finally don't buy lanterns in the city lighting lanterns outside the official event is illegal and honestly it's dangerous.

Stick to the official experience, it's safer, more beautiful and truly unforgettable.
