1
for many years this man was known for having the most
2
ridiculous chin in combat sports no matter what you threw at him this dude will literally ask for more
3
and this factor alone made rotang one of the scariest fights for most
4
because when you're fighting someone who could take your best shots
5
and eat it like it's nothing it is in fact the moralizing and takeru had already experienced this first hand, because just one year earlier these two fought for the first time,
6
and the fight only lasted 80 seconds.
7
Roteng backed Takeru to the ropes, and Takeru was able to fire back with the right hand that landed clean, except Roteng barely even reacted.
8
And this is where Takeru made a huge mistake.
9
Instead of resetting, Takeru tried to fire back again while he was out of position, and Roteng leaped into his left hook that knocked Takeru out.
10
And this wasn't just another loss for Takeru, it was the first time in his career he had ever been knocked out.
11
And after working his way back, Takeru had one last chance to solve the puzzle that was Rateng.
12
And somehow, Takeru finally cracked Rateng's iron chin.
13
But the way he did it is a lot more interesting than it seems.
14
So how did Takeru do it?
15
To understand this, we first need to look at the biggest difference between these two fighters.
16
As soon as the fight starts, notice their stances.
17
Rateng stands in a traditional Muay Thai stance.
18
His feet are narrow, and he stays light on his lead leg.
19
This makes it very easy for Rateng to lift his leg to check kicks, and throw teeps.
20
But on the other hand, Takeru stands much wider, and this gives Takeru a much stronger base for his boxing.
21
You can actually see the difference when Rateng wants to punch.
22
As Rateng gets ready to throw his left hook, notice how he first widens his stance and loads onto his lead leg before attacking.
23
But Takeru doesn't have to do this.
24
His base is already set, so all he needs to do is sit into his punches.
25
And this tiny difference becomes extremely important once they actually start exchanging.
26
But in the first round, both are feeling each other out, and neither one opens up too much.
27
Instead, Takeru keeps attacking his calf.
28
Takeru lands a calf kick over and over, and even when Rotting tries to lift his leg to check, Takeru can still catch him around the ankle.
29
At first, Rotting didn't seem too bothered, but by the end of the round, when Takeru feints the calf, Rotting starts to react and gets ready to defend.
30
And remember this detail for later.
31
In round 2, both fighters start opening up, and this is where the difference in their boxing starts to become obvious.
32
As Rotting rhythm steps back, this becomes a tell that he's about to attack and loads up his left hook.
33
But Takeru's feet are already set, so Takeru is able to fire his right hand before the left hook and follows with his own left hook, and this immediately gets a reaction out of Ratang,
34
as it sparks his iron chin ego.
35
So as they both go to trade again, they both miss their right hand, but Takeru's hands are faster, and his left hook takes a much tighter path,
36
and Takeru drops Ratang, even though Ratang immediately argues that he slipped.
37
So naturally after this, Rateng wants to get it back.
38
And from here, Rateng starts getting more aggressive and eventually tries to establish his jab.
39
The first time Rateng jabs, Takeru high guards it.
40
The second time, Takeru slips and fires back.
41
And when Rateng throws a jab for the third time in a row, Takeru comes back with his right hand into the left hook and follows up again to drop Rateng for the second time.
42
And this time, Rateng is clearly hurt.
43
And Takeru ends the round unloading massive shots, trying to finally put him away but somehow, Ratang survives.
44
But in round 3, Ratang actually makes a really smart adjustment.
45
Instead of trying to box with Takeru, he starts using his teep and becomes super active with his lead leg.
46
Not only does this keep Takeru away every time he tries to step into range
47
or disrupt him when he tries to box, but by constantly using the lead leg and being active with it, it makes it harder for Takeru to calf kick it.
48
But even with Ratang finding success, for some reason, Takeru just looks like he's having the time of his life.
49
Ratang lands on him and Takeru smiles.
50
He gets pushed back, and immediately comes forward again.
51
But even with everything happening, Takeru still kept attacking Rotteng's calf when he could.
52
And for the most part, Rotteng was doing a pretty good job hiding how much the kicks were affecting him.
53
But eventually, he couldn't hide his reactions.
54
And by the 5th round, it finally paid off.
55
And this is where we finally get to see the dilemma that eventually led to Rotteng getting knocked out.
56
But to understand it better, let's go back to Takeru's previous fight with Dennis Purich.
57
In this fight, Takeru absolutely battered Purech using two attacks, his calf kick and his right hand.
58
But watch what happens when we put them next to each other.
59
When Takeru throws his calf kick, he dips his body and drops his right arm before swinging the kick.
60
Now watch when he throws his overhand.
61
He uses a similar dip and he drops his right arm in almost the same way.
62
So Takeru is essentially creating a 50 -50 dilemma where it becomes hard to tell whether you should defend high or low.
63
And because calf kicks hurt you no matter how good your chin is, even elite fighters start to make mistakes.
64
And against Rotteng, Takeru had spent almost the entire fight attacking Rotteng's calf.
65
So back to the fifth.
66
We already know Rotteng is reacting to the feints.
67
Now watch what happens when Takeru attacks.
68
As Takeru drops his right hand to throw it, Rotteng Rotting lifts his lead leg, not knowing whether a punch or calf kick is coming.
69
And this time, Takeru attacks his head, sending him stumbling backwards.
70
And once Rotting reaches the ropes, Takeru unloads again and lands some huge shots that drop him again.
71
But this time when Rotting gets back up, he's clearly tired and a little out of it.
72
From here, Takeru immediately walks him down and eventually begins to unload again.
73
Except this time, Rotting can't survive.
74
And in the final fight of Takeru's career, he finally managed to crack one of the greatest iron chins in combat sports.
75
But what makes this knockout impressive isn't just the punch that finished Roteng.
76
It's everything Takeru did before it.
77
He spent the majority of the fight creating another threat.
78
And as most people know, the punches you don't expect are the ones that do the most damage.
79
And Takeru, using another threat, was able to catch Roteng and eventually put him away.
80
But there's one more thing that made this fight different.
81
This was Takeru's final fight, a rematch against a man who embarrassed him.
82
But even then, he spent it having the time of his life.
83
At the start, both guys were smiling, being a little cheeky with each other.
84
But as the fight went on, Roteng's smile disappeared, while Takeru's kept getting bigger.
85
And that difference matters, because it changes what getting hit means.
86
When you're having fun, getting hit is just part of the game.
87
You shake it off, and stick to the plan.
88
But when the fun's gone, every shot feels like you're losing, you start to feel the pressure, and you start forcing things trying to get it back.
89
So Takeru got hit, and went right back to his calf kicks.
90
Whereas Roteng got dropped, and his approach started to change, and you could see the frustration.
91
And by having fun, Takeru fought loose and relaxed the whole time.
