1
I'm going to try turning pine trees into drinkable soda.
2
Why?
3
Because I love a nice,
4
refreshing, carbonated beverage on a hot summer day.
5
But unfortunately, I don't have one.
6
Now, I could do the normal person thing and just go buy some from the store,
7
but come on, what fun is that?
8
Instead, I'm going to test a homemade recipe with a tree as the main ingredient,
9
which will take me on a quest traveling over 300 kilometers,
10
and you'll see why soon.
11
Thanks to Milanote for supporting my weird adventure.
12
But let's start at the very beginning.
13
Pine needle pop or soda,
14
whatever you want to call it,
15
is a naturally fermented fizzy drink made from pine trees that apparently taste just like Sprite.
16
Now, Google taught me that there's actually a lot of different types within the pine category.
17
And thankfully, I did some research because I also learned that apparently some of them are toxic.
18
So yeah, this is my official disclaimer that please,
19
if you're going to try this,
20
make sure that the tree you're using is edible and safe.
21
Out of curiosity, I went to my local Home Depot to see like,
22
can you just accidentally buy a toxic pine?
23
And yeah, you sure can.
24
Oh, and what's this?
25
Just another one, which after a quick Google search, honestly seems pretty terrifying.
26
That's pretty crazy.
27
Also, if you're thinking to yourself,
28
oh, I'm gonna turn my Christmas tree into a soda,
29
probably don't because commercially grown Christmas trees are treated with chemicals and pesticides,
30
which you really don't wanna be drinking.
31
Not gonna lie, now that I know that this whole thing involves a bit of danger,
32
it actually kind of makes it more fun.
33
So let's get this process going.
34
First thing we need is this.
35
There's gonna be a bunch of pressure that will build up inside of it.
36
So make sure that you use a bottle like this or a mason jar,
37
something that can withstand a high amount of pressurization or else it'll just explode.
38
It's the cold hard facts.
39
So you make sure you use a good, good bottle.
40
Next, our main ingredient is obviously pine trees and more specifically the pine needles.
41
I have a few growing in my yard,
42
and I use a tree identifier app to make sure it wasn't toxic.
43
All right, we're good.
44
Eastern white pine.
45
This one is safe.
46
Which meant I could now begin my harvesting mission.
47
It's pretty crazy to think that these little spiky guys are going to become a refreshing,
48
smooth beverage, but I'm just going to trust the process here.
49
So I just kept on collecting pine needles until I had enough.
50
At least I hope it's enough.
51
It seems like a lot.
52
Oh, there's a little spider web piece in here.
53
Don't want that.
54
And we're just cruising right along.
55
So on to the next step.
56
Into the bottle they go.
57
Pulled up actually.
58
I just had an idea.
59
So I'm going on a family trip soon to the ocean
60
and I'm thinking how fun would it be to do a
61
comparison test of the regular backyard version versus a shore pine which only grows in coastal environments.
62
Will this salty ocean air make it more flavorful?
63
Which one will be better?
64
Or maybe they both taste terrible.
65
These are the questions I got to find the answers to.
66
And so the next day I packed up the car
67
and we started our journey with a ferry ride across the ocean
68
And Then a few more hours of driving a nice little road trip,
69
until we reached the cozy coastal town of Tofino.
70
As luck would have it,
71
the trees right at our campsite were not shore pines.
72
And so I began searching.
73
I was checking out every single tree I saw,
74
hoping it would be the one.
75
But unfortunately, it was a lot harder to locate than I thought.
76
Days were passing by and don't get me wrong,
77
we were having an amazing trip,
78
but I was determined to make soda from a shore pine tree,
79
but I legit couldn't find a single one.
80
Ruby did find these two shells though.
81
She was very proud.
82
I hate to say it,
83
but my confidence of finding shore pines is unfortunately pretty low.
84
I don't know if it's going to happen.
85
There was only two days left before we had to return home.
86
And so I increased my search efforts.
87
I studied every single leaf and branch, but still no luck.
88
It was the very last day of our trip and I was ready to admit defeat.
89
But then, okay, I couldn't believe it.
90
So I had to drive all the way here to see if it's true.
91
There's a trail literally called Shore Pine Bog.
92
Like what are the chances just down this path?
93
Apparently there's going to be just a whole bunch of them.
94
And there absolutely was.
95
Ain't no false advertising here.
96
This trail is very adequately named.
97
Oh, this is amazing.
98
Look, there's one, there's one, there's one right there.
99
They're literally everywhere.
100
We hit the jackpot.
101
It honestly felt like I had won the lottery.
102
After many hopeless days, unable to locate this very tree,
103
here they all were in one place.
104
I was going to achieve my goal of transforming this rare tree into pop after all,
105
and I couldn't be more excited.
106
My container was filled with pine needles,
107
it was the perfect way to end our trip.
108
And just like that, we made it home.
109
And before we continue with the soda making process,
110
let me share with you a little secret project that I've been working on.
111
Six months ago, next to the studio,
112
there was this boring, underutilized,
113
empty area, and I transformed it into this.
114
A beautiful outdoor wellness space,
115
complete with a sauna, cold plunge, and a hot shower.
116
It's legit the best thing ever.
117
I'm so grateful for this space,
118
and it's truly been a labor of love,
119
spending many days out here just getting sweaty,
120
building it, learning landscaping stuff,
121
and overall bringing this vision to life,
122
which was definitely possible thanks to today's sponsor, Milanote.
123
Typically planning my projects look like this, just an unorganized mess.
124
But then a few years ago I learned about this organization tool called Milanote,
125
and now the planning stage looks more like this, way better.
126
Legit, all you need is a phone or laptop,
127
and that jumbled up mess becomes so nice and organized.
128
And I actually was using Melanote to plan this whole outdoor space.
129
So when their team reached out, I got very excited.
130
So let me show you what it's all about.
131
This is what the main page looks like.
132
You can upload photos, have to-do lists,
133
links, take notes, a ton of different stuff all in one place.
134
It's really easy to use.
135
You just click, drag stuff around,
136
You can zoom out, infinite room to play with.
137
Oh, you wanna add a little note right here?
138
Click, drag, boom, there it is.
139
Oh, what about a little arrow?
140
Okay, sure, boom.
141
It's so intuitive and simple.
142
And every time I would complete a task,
143
it was so satisfying coming back and crossing it off the to-do list.
144
And then you can also have different boards within your main one.
145
So I've got this one for the landscaping inspo and kinda the look that I was going for.
146
And then one over here for the shower build,
147
which was a fun challenge.
148
Definitely never built anything like this before.
149
And fun little hack that I did.
150
Instead of spending a bunch of money to get a water line put in,
151
I used this propane water heater with a buried garden hose and bam.
152
And yep, you guessed it.
153
I was organized for the cold plunge too.
154
I wanted to do a DIY style build like this,
155
but I wanted to go for more of a textured look.
156
So I used micro cement,
157
which involved lots of materials and different videos to help teach me how to do it.
158
There's also a really great mobile app that syncs with your desktop board so that wherever you're at,
159
you can take them with you out and about.
160
And if you're like, what the heck,
161
where do I even begin?
162
Don't worry, they've got like over a hundred templates to help you get started.
163
From start to finish, Milanote has been a part of this project.
164
I really recommend it.
165
It's also free to sign up.
166
So go click the link in the description.
167
Thanks to Milanote for keeping me organized and for supporting this video.
168
Now back to it.
169
All right, ladies and gents.
170
It is finally time to turn these spikes into Sprite.
171
And yes, I did have to go back in the yard to pick new ones
172
because the ones I got earlier were all dried out while I was away on the trip.
173
So basically restarting this whole thing.
174
But here we go.
175
So you already know this first part.
176
Just filling up the bottle.
177
Was that a struggle to get these tiny pine needles into this tiny hole?
178
Yes, yes it was.
179
Thanks for asking.
180
This is probably where a mason jar would be a better option,
181
but we did it.
182
This is the backyard pine tree and then this here is the elusive shore pine,
183
which I'm very happy that I was able to find some.
184
And now for the next step,
185
I'm going to add in a few spoonfuls of sugar.
186
So what happens is that the yeast in the pine needles creates a reaction with the sugar,
187
and that's what makes the carbonation,
188
which is the bubbly flavor that we know and love in pop.
189
Another fun fact, since starting this project,
190
I've learned that there's also health benefits from pine needles.
191
There's immune boosting qualities of vitamin C,
192
there's vitamin A, and even pain relieving properties.
193
If this works out, that's pretty crazy.
194
A delicious and good for you drink?
195
Sign me up, yes please.
196
All right, the final ingredient is water,
197
and it has to be natural spring water.
198
Not because I'm bougie, but because we don't want the chlorine that could be found in tap water.
199
There's just sugar and pine needles everywhere now.
200
All right, here we go.
201
This here is live footage of me realizing that I should definitely use the funnel.
202
It's pretty amazing how it only takes three ingredients to make this natural soda.
203
It's like a wise man once said.
204
Even with the funnel, I still end up spilling it and making a mess.
205
Now there's sugar, pine needles, and water everywhere.
206
And bam.
207
Now we just seal the bottle,
208
give it a little shake to melt some of that sugar,
209
and that's pretty much it, honestly.
210
It's pretty darn simple.
211
And now we just wait for the fermentation process to happen.
212
So I'll see you in three days.
213
Look at the bubbles.
214
Oh yeah.
215
I think that means that the carbonation process was a success.
216
Woo.
217
Let's open them up and find out.
218
Whoa.
219
That's crazy.
220
It's literally fizzy like regular pop.
221
What the heck?
222
All right, I gotta get a glass and some ice.
223
All right, so up first for our taste test is the backyard pine tree.
224
Right away, It smells more like a tree than Sprite,
225
but let's take a swig and find out what it tastes like.
226
Whoa!
227
Okay, that's pretty crazy.
228
There's definitely some citrusy flavors going on.
229
It's like subtle and really smooth, not too fizzy.
230
That's actually so good.
231
What the heck?
232
That came from a tree.
233
I'm not kidding.
234
This is way better than I thought it would be.
235
I had some skepticism that it would just be like chewing on tree bark,
236
but this is actually a delightful beverage.
237
But it's time for some competition.
238
Will the shore pine taste better?
239
Let's find out.
240
Got a little pine needle in there.
241
I'll be honest I did have a whole system I was gonna use this strainer
242
and strain it through here to catch all the pine needles
243
but I just got too excited
244
and I just started drinking it straight from the jar
245
so you should probably strain it
246
so you don't end up with pine needles in your cup but but I'm just gonna drink around them,
247
or maybe extra protein.
248
Now taste test time, let's do this.
249
Here is the elusive shore pine.
250
Traveled over 300 kilometers to get this.
251
Let's see if it was worth it.
252
Oh, very different.
253
Wow, I gotta go one more.
254
I don't like it as much, honestly.
255
I don't know what it is, but it's definitely different.
256
And this one tastes way more like a classic Sprite.
257
I don't know what's going on here, but decent.
258
It's just not as good.
259
I have one final idea that I think will improve the taste even more.
260
So I sliced up a lime and lemon,
261
squeezed them in, and now we're talking.
262
Oh wow okay new flavors unlocked I mean it tastes just like Sprite now
263
so it's not that new
264
but that's crazy oh come on whoa finally I can get outside in that sun and enjoy my refreshing
265
homemade pine needle pop.
266
Oh yeah it's nighttime.
267
Well that'll have to wait until tomorrow.
268
For now let me show you what's inside these big mystery boxes.
269
It is hats!
270
You've actually seen me wearing them throughout this whole video and I've spent the past bunch of months designing,
271
refining, redesigning and manufacturing them.
272
It's a project that I'm so excited and proud of.
273
To have a physical product,
274
like a wearable thing that I can share with you guys who support me,
275
it means a lot.
276
I'm so pumped up.
277
I'm going to be doing a limited drop on September 27th.
278
More details to come and that's all I got for you.
279
Woo, that's so good.
280
Go drink a tree, but make sure it's a safe, not toxic one.
281
Oh, I'm finishing this.
