And before we actually dig in, I want to know, have you actually heard of the former Major League Baseball player by the same namesake as Derek Turnbow?

And I remember one time I had opened up a pack of baseball cards.

It was actually a bin my dad had from a while ago, and he had a bunch of baseball cards.

Yeah, I did know him.

Yeah.

It's crazy.

It's unbelievable.

Elise and I had a little bit of a wager to see if you knew who Derek Turnbow was.

And if you played a character like Derek Turnbow

and no one ever lets you know that there was someone named Derek Turnbow out there, we thought that everyone would be walking with their heads in the clouds.

But apparently that was not the case.

A well-informed young man right there.

The show is over with, but your character, Derek Turnbow, he turned into delightful Derek at the end.

How did that evolution come about?

I feel like really it was a lot of fun to see where the Duffer Brothers really took the character.

And, you know, originally they had said that they wanted him to be kind of a one-off bully character, but seeing how he got that character arc,

it was really an honor to play it.

And I'm so glad that the Duffer Brothers had that.

So just the writing was so great, and they really gave me that character arc that I was able to play out well I think.

It started as a bully, ended up delightful.

How about that?

I mean so what does it take is the evolution.

How do you bring people to the Cubs?

They need to come together right now.

What's the key here?

I feel like really just they need someone to believe in them

and I feel like as long as we just still believe in our Cubs, avoid that sweep, they can do something great and you know I'm hoping for a nice game today.

Aren't we all, right?

So you grew up in Arlington Heights, big Chicago fan, Cubs fan, Bears fan.

It sounds like even just a baseball fan in general.

Describe your sports background.

Exactly.

I used to play baseball, actually, myself.

And I played for a couple of Little League teams, also played football.

And, you know, I've always been a Chicago sports fan, so it's a lot of fun.

Just been born and raised a Cubs fan.

What position were you?

I usually played outfield, sometimes right field, sometimes left field, depended on the game.

Yeah.

Yeah, it was a lot of fun.

So the first pitch should be...

Oh, yeah, hopefully.

No problem.

You stretch out nicely.

Yep, yep.

How about this?

On the show, you played on a baseball team that was very appropriately named the Chicago Cubs.

You being a Chicago native, wearing a Cubs jersey.

How was that a full circle moment for you?

It was amazing because, like, I had actually, I had stopped playing baseball in fifth grade.

Yeah, it's amazing.

It's so fun.

I had stopped playing baseball in fifth grade, and I was really glad to get back into it, get back in uniform.

That's cool.

Yeah, I had played catcher a couple plays, and I got beaned in the chest, though.

Enough of that.

Yeah, it was one game that I played catcher, but it was still fun.

I knew that, too.

I got beaned a couple of plays.

He was like, enough of this baseball.

I got money to make.

Hold on a second.

I got acting chops to fulfill.

Wait, did you get to keep the jersey?

No, I wish we could have.

Oh, yeah, that would be cool enough.

It would have been really cool.

So when you threw out the pitch at the White Sox as well, what's the key?

What do you think is the key to success here now that you've done it and you're experienced at this?

I think it's always better to overthrow it than underthrow it.

So even if it is 1,000 feet outside, it's still made it over the place.

How did you get into acting, man?

Yeah, so it was actually my mom's friend did Felco Windows commercials here in Chicago.

And he asked me to be in one.

So yeah, one thing led to the next.

And we got signed on with a talent agency.

And they just gave me the audition for Stranger Things.

And so great.

Wait, what did you do for the Felco commercials?

For the Felco commercials, I stood there and I yelled, mom, really, really loud.

Wait, can you do it?

What?

Mom!

It was like roof shingles had fallen onto a burger so...

A burger?

Yeah, and the dad apparently, like, brushing them off and pretending nothing happened.

What is it like when you go to school and you've been on one of the biggest shows ever?

It's kind of crazy because a lot of people just yell the famous catchphrase in the hallways,

and the teachers are not exactly thrilled about people yelling profanity in the hallways.

But it's really fun because a lot of people are just coming up to me asking for autographs at school, and it's like a dream come true for me.
