that manga energy to life while also humanizing her.

You know those things?

Those are like the iconic moments of Yumiko's craziness and wildness.

But...

and out really fast or slams the table to be personalized

and iconic to her so it was really fun to play with that

so fantastic as Yumiko in Bat.

And we had such a great time watching this show.

It's something that we did not expect it to be like.

We kept seeing the posters and the trailers.

And when we finally got into it,

we're like, wow, this is a very unique show.

It is.

You know, the manga energy is really coming to life.

It's, you know, very visually animated and wild and eccentric.

And I love the editing style.

Yeah.

Definitely.

I love the editing style as well.

Yumiko is such an enigmatic and fearless character.

Yeah.

What was your first reaction when you read that script for Bette?

And how did you begin to kind of tap into that energy?

I mean, Yumiko is just so fun.

I mean, she's crazy.

She's a teenage gambling addict.

And it was really important for me to bring that manga energy to life,

you know, and to balance it while also humanizing her.

So, you know, those moments were like yelling, bingo!

You know, those things, those are like the iconic moments of Yumiko's craziness and wildness.

And she's just such a wild card.

But you know for the first time ever in the story we're really diving into what truly drives Yumiko's madness

So the duality of her character was really fun to play

Yeah Something that we love so much

while watching the show is also just your voice in it

and how distinct it is and how you love playing with people

So we'd love if you could talk about finding her voice

and you know kind of really wrapping your head around who this character was Oh, for sure.

I mean, it's inspired by the manga.

So a lot of the physicalities and the pace and like it was something that was really drawn from the original.

But, you know, again, I'm also taking that inspiration and we're creating this whole new world.

But yeah, all of those things were really important to me.

I wanted her voice to be specifically Yumeko.

And I wanted to have those moments of,

you know, stillness and that really stoic energy that she has.

She's very magnetically charming in a lot of ways.

And then she's also terrifying.

She's crazy.

So it was really fun to play into.

Yeah, she's a little scary, for sure.

Yeah.

I think just because it's like she lures you in.

She does.

This is interesting.

And then when you have those big moments,

especially at the gambling tables,

it's like, okay, this is a character I was not expecting at all.

Yeah.

I mean, she comes ready to play.

And I really wanted to play her in a sense where,

you know, the audience could debate what was going to happen.

Or it's like, is she flirting with them or is she not?

Or is she about to strike or is she not?

I kind of really love that impulsiveness of her character.

Definitely.

Now, the gambling in this show is very cool.

Yeah.

Never did I want to know how to gamble more in my life and play all these games.

But I'd love to know,

what was your background going into this?

Were you familiar with all the different games that you guys were playing?

Did you have to go to a gambling school to kind of get an idea,

wrap your head around that?

Yeah, it was so much fun.

And so right before filming,

we did a gambling boot camp with all of the castmates.

And it was such a good bonding experience for all of us.

And I love my castmates.

It was just so much fun.

And we had professional gamblers come in and really teach us the specific moves.

and every, you know, move that you did was very personalized to the character,

which is something that I loved.

You know, I wanted Yumiko's hand movements and the way that she,

you know, goes in and out really fast or slams the table to be personalized and iconic to her.

So it was really fun to play with that.

That's cool.

Yeah.

And these gambling scenes got very intense.

for example, how, without going into spoilers,

obviously, how crazy and psychological that episode gets.

Did it ever really get intense on sets?

And if it did, how did you guys kind of break that off?

I mean, as soon as the director called action,

all of us were locked in.

And it was really cool because,

you know, it's a school setting,

so we have a lot of background actors,

and they're seeing it for the first time, too.

And so sometimes the energy was really wild because it would get so intense and crazy.

Yeah, I mean, I grew up in Toronto and I'm Canadian

and I'm also Japanese and most of the lead cast were all Canadian actors

what directors inspired you most when you were growing up?

And, you know, I think growing up,

I, I, I, it's going to sound strange.

I wasn't even the biggest movie fanatic.

Like I wasn't, I was never the person who was like knowing all the names of the directors and everything like that.

I just got into it because I enjoyed the process so much and I felt like a kid doing it.

I was a kid with such a wild imagination and I was always playing imaginary games.

I was running in the ravine next to my house pretending I was in a zombie apocalypse.

I fell in love with filmmaking the same kind of way.

the camera operates and how it takes a whole crew to do this one end result

and how everybody is like a working piece in the puzzle.

Is there something from Yumiko that you're going to take maybe to future projects that you bring to?

I mean she does teach two very important lessons

which is one being present because you know to her either outcome good

or bad the worst thing has already happened in her life

which was her parents death so that's why when she's gambling she's

so free in the moment and she lives things by chance

so I think remembering to always be present is good maybe not in a gambling sense

but I will be present and she also sees people's essence.

St. Dominic's is filled with people with such hard exteriors and

when she steps into the school one of the main reasons why she shakes things up

so much is because she looks through their hard exterior

and almost like holds a mirror up to them

and they see themselves for the first time

and I think it's just a good reminder you know you

a lot of people in life you never know what's going on and they can have hard exteriors

but to try and see past that and give everybody grace and,

you know, empathy and be like,

And when we look back to the original manga and the fans of that,

what is it that you're really excited for fans to see with Bette and also something that you think will surprise them?

I'm just so excited.

Our core principles of Bette are really inspired by the manga.

I mean, it is about power.

It is about social status and those entire dynamics and wealth.

And we really do bring that manga energy to life.

The reason, you know, people love Hakegurui so much is because it's filled with that manga energy.

And, you know, we really carry the story with a lot of love

and care and attention to make sure we bring that side to life.
