Recently, in my days, I've looked a little like this.
2
It's like I'm an audience member in other people's lives.
3
and being pulled into their world,
4
their interests, their seemingly endless talents,
5
while mine are left in the dark.
6
I have an average screen time of about four and a half hours a day.
7
And that doesn't even cover the time spent behind my computer or watching TV.
8
And four and a half hours is a lot of time to be spending on anything, really.
9
But especially on something that usually isn't all that meaningful,
10
often just gets forgotten pretty much instantly,
11
and sometimes isn't even real.
12
They say you are what you consume.
13
And if that's the case,
14
then who does that make me?
15
And better yet, who am I without it?
16
I came across a quote this morning,
17
like literally 15 minutes ago.
18
I was just scrolling away and I had to pause
19
and basically just go upstairs and record this because it just hit a little too close to home.
20
It goes like this.
21
You obsess over your identity in relation to others while your soul rots inside of you.
22
Potentially a bit of a serious,
23
dramatic take, but I kind of think it is that serious.
24
On pretty much every single social media platform that I'm on,
25
I have lists and lists and lists of things I want to do.
26
and they just keep growing.
27
And that's the problem.
28
They keep growing and they never shrink because nothing ever gets ticked off.
29
More and more I've just kind of realized how sad it actually is
30
that I clearly have so many ways in
31
which I would like to spend my time
32
but I choose to just spend it watching other people do stuff instead and my interests are just you know rotting away.
33
If I wouldn't have all of those sort of external voices to listen to
34
and to compare myself to where does that leave me?
35
I just want to know.
36
I quite often feel as though there's a gap between the things I want to do
37
and the things I actually end up doing.
38
I have no idea if I can do this.
39
And there's a lot of reasons for that really,
40
whether it's because I don't have time or skills,
41
equipment, patience, originality, permission, but above all, confidence.
42
So it's easier to consume what everyone else is making,
43
rather than attempting to close that gap yourself.
44
The more I consume, and consequently the less I create,
45
the bigger that gap gets.
46
And the more self-doubt begins to creep in.
47
Until you put the phone down.
48
I am attempting this painting today.
49
I've had it saved for a long time and today's the day.
50
We'll see how I manage.
51
I think the act of creating isn't so much about the actual output as it is about its effects on you.
52
One of the things that scares me the most about how much I consume is the total lack of self-expression.
53
In a way, it feels as though the more I take in,
54
the less I understand who I am as a person,
55
what it is that I like or don't like,
56
and what I'm actually capable of.
57
There we have my little painting.
58
And it didn't take that long, like two hours max.
59
You know?
60
And that's not to say that it works out every time, because it won't.
61
It's not working.
62
It just keeps cracking.
63
I might have to give up on this one.
64
It is what it is.
65
I tried at least.
66
But you also might discover things you didn't even know were there.
67
One of the things that I've really been wanting to try is gouache paint.
68
So I bought some.
69
Now that I'm actually actively trying to make the things that I want to make,
70
what do you know?
71
I'm actually getting really excited about them.
72
It's sparking something in me.
73
A part of me that usually isn't really that stimulated.
74
I haven't even started using the freaking paint.
75
I'm already super happy with my purchase.
76
Like, that means something.
77
But I never would know that that means something if I wouldn't try.
78
So, I'm gonna try these paints now.
79
The reality is though that consuming is infinitely easier than creating will ever be.
80
It doesn't really ask much of you.
81
No skills or patience, definitely no tolerance for being a beginner,
82
so it's a comfortable place to be really.
83
That is, of course, until you realize that if you never allow yourself to be a beginner,
84
you'll also never stop being one.
85
While we're on the topic of being a beginner,
86
I know very well how hard it can be to flip
87
that switch and start making the things that you want to make.
88
So if you're looking for a little bit of guidance,
89
I can highly recommend Skillshare,
90
the sponsor of this video.
91
Throughout this journey of trying to create more and consume less,
92
I've turned to Skillshare multiple times,
93
and it's been such a great tool to answer the one question I always found myself asking,
94
where do I start?
95
I think starting is often the hardest part of anything,
96
really, but especially with all of these interests that I have,
97
it can be so overwhelming to figure out how to bring them to life
98
and where to even learn the skills necessary for them.
99
Skillshare has been a pretty perfect companion for it.
100
Whether I wanted to paint waterscapes,
101
which I'd never attempted before,
102
or learn how to use gouache,
103
which I'd never used before,
104
or just figure out how to help any future ideas come to life,
105
I could always find a little bit of guidance on Skillshare.
106
It's been incredibly helpful for me,
107
and I'm sure it will be for you as well.
108
So if you'd like to see for yourself,
109
the first 500 people to use my link in the description or scan the QR code on screen,
110
will receive a one month free trial of Skillshare.
111
I think people often assume that creating is only relevant if you're an artist of some sort,
112
and I don't really agree with that.
113
Creating to me, at its very core,
114
is nothing but a constant cycle of problem solving,
115
of figuring out how to narrow down that gap between imagination and creation.
116
And rather than freaking out over the distance,
117
just giving it a shot instead.
118
So I'm gonna try to recreate a shot that I've been seeing all over my Instagram for the past couple of days,
119
and I think it looks really cool.
120
Essentially just like a hand reaching through the screen.
121
I've never done this before,
122
I don't own a green screen so I don't know if it's gonna work but I'm gonna try and we'll see.
123
You never know.
124
I'm learning that at the end of the day pretty much everything is figureoutable
125
if you just give yourself the space for it.
126
I don't know.
127
Let's see what that looks like.
128
It's been a couple days since I've tried to recreate
129
that shot
130
but I've been just like tweaking it a little bit re-recording
131
some stuff admittedly it actually turned out pretty okay it's definitely not perfect
132
and I feel like there is absolutely more ways to make it look more realistic
133
or more like smooth and put together
134
but I don't know I'm just discovering it sounds so stupid
135
but all these things are kind of obvious obviously
136
when you're gonna start giving things a shot and trying things
137
and doing things you're gonna start realizing
138
that you're more capable than you think you are or
139
that things maybe aren't as hard as they seemed
140
or you know stuff like that
141
and maybe that's what makes it even worse like there's such obvious benefits to not just scrolling your life away
142
and yet we still do it all the time
143
and i don't mean to say
144
that consuming is the issue here i think my lists of interests are nothing
145
but proof that there is plenty of inspiration to be gained from it
146
but it's more more so about what you do with all of that inspiration and all of that input.
147
Rather than just letting it float around in your head,
148
morphing into a million different questions,
149
just giving it an outlet instead.
150
Whatever that may look like for you.
151
And it's not a matter of quit consuming cold turkey,
152
but more a matter of know what you're consuming,
153
be aware of what you're consuming,
154
be intentional about what you're consuming,
155
and don't let it get in the way of what you do
156
and what you make and what you try and how you think
157
and how you view yourself and the list goes on
158
but you get the point just most of the time it really is that damn phone
