Archaeology is the study of people in the past and the items that they left behind.

People left a variety of things.

So think about all the things you use on a day -to -day basis

and think about someone finding those hundreds of years later and what they would learn about you as a person.

And we can use those tools as archaeologists, those breadcrumbs, that evidence and the trash basically, to learn more about the people that use them.

Archaeology is actually a sub -discipline of anthropology, and anthropology is the study of people.

And so there's various ways that anthropologists study people.

There's linguistics, which studies language.

There's cultural, which studies, you know, modern people.

And there's biological, which you can think of as studying the human body and the history of the human body.

And then there's archaeology, and archaeology basically studies past peoples,

and they study past peoples by looking at the things that people leave behind in various places where they've lived, worked, and played.

So archaeology is the study of past cultures by looking at the stuff that they left behind.

that can include bones but it usually doesn't it's usually what we call artifacts

which are just things that were modified by people

so i always call an artifact uh like the stuff

that people left behind in the past

so you think about you use a certain utensil

and then you end up throwing it away well we could find

that hundreds of years later

and learn oh they use this type of utensil for cooking for eating things like

that so it's basically evidence of the lives

that people lived in the past there were people here they were living here they were loving

and growing families and experiencing hardships and joys just like we do now

and this is an opportunity to kind of touch their lives in a way

and bring them into the present and help tell their story
