1
Hi everyone!
2
In today's episode, we are exploring Boston, Massachusetts.
3
Take a look!
4
We are crossing the bridge.
5
The hotel that we are staying at is over here.
6
I've never been to this city before, so I am excited to explore with you.
7
We have a short itinerary for today.
8
Right now we are heading to the Freedom Trail.
9
What is the Freedom Trail?
10
It's just a historical walk where we could see a lot of history that took place in Boston.
11
That was some great new vocabulary.
12
There is a lot of U.S history in this city and I'm excited to learn all about it.
13
It is extremely windy today.
14
Another way to describe windy is breezy or chilly.
15
And hopefully the wind will die down by tomorrow because tomorrow is the Boston Marathon.
16
And we are here in Boston to support my friend
17
and I understand now how detrimental it would be if the wind was strong when running the marathon.
18
Do you know the word detrimental?
19
It's kind of a serious word so maybe I shouldn't have used
20
that word but all that means is it's not a good thing.
21
It is April and there's a saying April showers bring May flowers.
22
What that means is usually
23
in April it's supposed to rain a lot but then in May a lot of flowers will bloom.
24
But luckily while we are on vacation it will not be raining too much.
25
What I really love about the east coast is the various seasons.
26
We have winter, spring, summer, and fall.
27
And where I currently live in Los Angeles,
28
it's basically just a light summer all the time.
29
So I miss having four seasons.
30
When I travel, I tend to walk a lot.
31
Well, a lot for me,
32
which is maybe around 12,000 steps to 18,000 steps per day.
33
Sometimes I will rent a bike if we have to get far
34
and if I don't want to spend money on a cab.
35
This morning we decided to not go to breakfast because we were already running late.
36
Do you know the term running late?
37
It means that we're just late.
38
I'm not sure where the term running late came from, but it just simply means that we're late.
39
Instead of eating breakfast, we ordered some hot tea at a local tea shop
40
and also purchased a croissant from a local bakery.
41
I also had brought some snacks from home, so that was enough for me.
42
We will probably have a nice lunch.
43
There's my husband straight ahead.
44
Say hi!
45
I don't know where he's running to.
46
I think he's testing out his new bouncy Adidas.
47
The first thing that I notice about Boston is it's more diverse than I had anticipated.
48
Diverse means many groups of people.
49
It's also a very clean city,
50
and you can tell by the architecture how historical it is.
51
My husband loves baseball, and he said that he can't come to Boston without seeing Fenway.
52
I guess it's a famous baseball stadium.
53
Let me know in the comments if you love baseball.
54
Growing up, I was not a huge fan of baseball
55
because every time I went to a baseball game where I'm from in Baltimore,
56
Maryland, they always lost.
57
However, I did play softball with my old church league.
58
I was very young and I did a pretty good job at catching the ball.
59
Do you hear the church bells?
60
Today is Easter.
61
We are getting closer to the church bells.
62
So the church must be right around the corner.
63
I hope you can hear me.
64
I'm very close to the church with the ringing bells.
65
We are going to be wrapping around a nice park.
66
I wonder how old this water fountain is.
67
It has no water in it.
68
People are enjoying the weather today, even though it's windy.
69
But I think the locals are probably used to that.
70
There are no leaves on the trees.
71
Do you remember from one of my previous videos what you call these kind of trees?
72
They are called deciduous trees.
73
That's a difficult, or I should say advanced word, deciduous.
74
If we would have come here in a month from now,
75
there would probably be some beautiful leaves on these trees.
76
Boston is also known to have top Ivy League universities such as Harvard.
77
I wish in Los Angeles we had parks like this.
78
This park reminds me of New York.
79
Los Angeles, or LA, is very spread out
80
and there is this one park where there's many many trees planted there
81
but it takes about 30 to 40 minutes to drive there
82
and also you have to pay to get in it is not a public park with
83
that said la has a lot of great scenery and I am grateful for that.
84
I just wish that it was surrounded by more trees.
85
Look at that sculpture over there.
86
That's cool.
87
Do you know the sport that they are playing?
88
this is pickleball and at first glance it looks like a mini version of tennis
89
and a large version of ping pong so if tennis and ping pong got married that's pickleball and these people
90
over here are playing tennis.
91
They're really good.
92
We have some people over here playing baseball.
93
Or actually, they're playing catch, which is where you throw the ball back and forth.
94
The wind just died down.
95
It's really pleasant when the wind is not blowing me over.
96
We are now in Boston Common.
97
It is the oldest public park in the United States.
98
Isn't it beautiful?
99
I love the smell of nature.
100
These are beautiful pine trees.
101
Many people are out enjoying a book or having a picnic.
102
I accidentally did not have the gimbal centered so I have no idea if the video for the past
103
5 minutes looks good.
104
If you don't know what a gimbal is,
105
it's the controller for the camera that keeps the video centered.
106
There are a lot of dogs walking around, also enjoying this weather.
107
Oh, take a look at this.
108
This is a goose, right?
109
What do you call multiple gooses?
110
I'll give you a clue.
111
It's not gooses.
112
It's geese.
113
They must be used to being around a lot of people because they are not afraid when we come close.
114
That's a cool canoe-like transportation that is propelled by someone cycling on the back.
115
So it's like a hydro bike canoe.
116
This tree I bet is very old and I wish I could climb it.
117
We have some more geese in the water.
118
Excuse me, I just sneezed.
119
By the way, the most polite thing to do when someone sneezes is is you tell them, bless you.
120
Or if you say it quickly, it's bless you.
121
And if you sneeze, the most polite thing to say is, excuse me.
122
Excuse me.
123
I love these trees that have the willow type leaves.
124
That girl is so cute in her Easter outfit.
125
Here is another view of the park.
126
I wish you could smell the nature out here with me.
127
It smells really clean.
128
I do see some flowers shedding off of the trees.
129
And perhaps that's why I sneezed, because my body is no longer used to this type of pollen.
130
Where are we going now?
131
Newberry Street.
132
Shopping.
133
We're going shopping to Newberry Street.
134
What kind of shops are on Newberry Street?
135
They said luxury shopping.
136
I'm not sure.
137
We're about to be surprised.
138
We are crossing the crosswalk.
139
And look, we have Hermes.
140
Fancy store.
141
Do you know this brand?
142
Their purses probably start at $7,000.
143
dollars or maybe even start at ten thousand dollars which is crazy i love this brand
144
it's bottega veneta it's an italian brand so we must be on that shopping street that we were trying to get to.
145
I will be doing only window shopping on the street.
146
Do you know the term window shopping?
147
It means that you will not physically go into the store.
148
You will shop with just your eyes from the outside.
149
Oh, here we are.
150
Bandit.
151
My husband must already be in there and it's really busy.
152
Wow, excuse me.
153
It's poppin' in here, which is a casual term for it's really busy.
154
Poppin' is short for hopping.
155
They have running gear specifically for the Boston Marathon.
156
So that's pretty cool.
157
They have shorts, tank tops,
158
sports bras, hats, socks, shoes.
159
This brand of shoe is ASIC And that's what I'm wearing ASICs ASICs are my favorite They're very comfortable Did you notice how
160
when I said comfortable I did not pronounce it as comfortable It's comfortable I like this hat
161
that says spectator Do you know what that is?
162
The spectator is like an audience member watching.
163
And I think this was made specifically for the Boston Marathon supporters.
164
I bought a hat.
165
It is...
166
I knew it, this is exactly why.
167
I did not bring my hat from the hotel because I thought the wind would blow it over.
168
and look what just happened.
169
I need to make sure that it's really snug on my head.
170
Do you know what snug means?
171
It means tight.
172
We decided to eat at this maybe vegan spot.
173
Let's see if we can get a menu.
174
Can you grab a menu?
175
We received our hot beverage which has fresh lemon, fresh ginger, and honey.
176
This is a hot drink.
177
And we also got the watermelon kohler, which has watermelon, cardamom, and mint.
178
We just received our food.
179
I got the bibimbap bowl, which is a Korean style dish.
180
And my husband got a buddha bowl, which has a ton of vegetables and grains.
181
I'm very full.
182
It was a very filling meal.
183
Have you heard of that term filling?
184
We are now on our way to the train station to head to the baseball stadium.
185
The train station was very easy to find.
186
Here we are.
187
We're heading down.
188
I love taking trains and using public transportation.
189
I get nauseous when I ride cabs and Ubers because it requires me to sit in the backseat
190
and the motion of the car makes me feel very sick and nauseous.
191
I wonder how old this train station is.
192
We are taking the green line and we have to find where to buy the ticket.
193
Oh, here it is.
194
We need a round trip ticket,
195
which means we need to get to the destination and to come back.
196
So for this kiosk, it requires for you to purchase one ticket at a time
197
So we will need to repeat this process He is tapping to pay
198
The ticket is printing We do not want a receipt And it asked if we'd like to purchase another ticket
199
So he is going through the process one more time.
200
And here is what the ticket looks like.
201
Here we go.
202
Here we are, Arlington, and we need to take it down the T to the D.
203
We asked one of the workers here which way to go.
204
And let's see if we can catch this train.
205
No, we missed it.
206
That's okay, we will catch the next one.
207
That was a quick train ride.
208
Only about eight minutes.
209
And we've hopped off the train.
210
Is this the right way to the exit? Where are you going?
211
Wrong way.
212
All these people were following us.
213
I guess we were walking with confidence because they thought this was the exit as well.
214
The wind has died down.
215
The sun is out.
216
I am still extremely full from the meal that we just had.
217
We are safely crossing the train track.
218
The wind has picked up.
219
I'm afraid my hat is going to blow off.
220
We are walking the path towards Fenway Park.
221
I would like to know why we are going to Fenway Park.
222
Why are you so interested in going to Fenway?
223
Fenway is considered one of the oldest stadiums in the USA.
224
There's a lot of history, a lot of baseball history,
225
and it's also known to have what's called the Green Monster,
226
which is triple the size of a normal home run wall.
227
This wall is three times the size, so we'll get some video on that.
228
My hat just fell off.
229
Boston has a lot of contemporary, newer-looking buildings.
230
We are scanning our ticket.
231
Thank you.
232
Going to a baseball game here.
233
is a different experience compared to going to a game in LA because most of the
234
people going to the sports games in LA I don't think are true fans because many
235
Many of the residents were not born and raised in LA.
236
So I think that the crowd here will be much more enthusiastic.
237
We're about to find out.
238
Which team are you rooting for?
239
Boston.
240
Boston.
241
We said that with the Boston accent.
242
The locals, if they have a Boston accent, would say BAS-TIN.
243
And when they say park the car, they would say pack the car.
244
They don't really pronounce the R's.
245
In Boston, you pack the car.
246
The crowd is very enthusiastic here.
247
Can you hear them?
248
If you look straight ahead, you'll see a tall green wall.
249
That was the wall that my husband was talking about earlier.
250
And over here, you'll see the shorter wall,
251
which is the normal height for a baseball field wall.
252
The yellow jersey is Boston.
253
And the black jersey is Chicago.
254
go.
255
Red Sox versus White Sox.
256
We are in the cab on the way to the convention center.
257
At the convention center, we will see many brands that are sponsoring the Boston Marathon.
258
They are there to promote their brand or company.
259
We just got dropped off by the cab.
260
This architecture reminds me of Chicago.
261
Did you watch any of my Chicago vlogs?
262
We got dropped off at the wrong convention center.
263
Whose fault was that?
264
Your fault or the cab driver's fault?
265
We are now at the correct convention center.
266
I think I just made the metal detector go off.
267
The apparel section of the convention was underwhelming.
268
I think we had higher expectations of other brands to be there.
269
It was only Adidas.
270
So I think Adidas is the main sponsor for this Boston Marathon.
271
And now we are on the other side of the expo,
272
which has, let's see, I'm going this way.
273
Harvard Healthcare.
274
We just tasted a sample of an energy drink over here.
275
There's also headphones that you can test out.
276
There's a lot of random vendors here.
277
Nothing really worth filming to be honest.
278
On this wall is all the names of the runners of the marathon.
279
Oh!
280
He found them!
281
Go Craig!
282
Go Craig!
283
Can't wait to cheer you on tomorrow.
284
All the names are in alphabetical order, so it is easy to find.
285
We are now going to go to Newberry Street to go shopping.
286
We are walking along Newberry Street
287
and the shops are inside of these what
288
looks like residential buildings also known as brownstones I believe.
289
We are heading towards another shoe store called New Balance.
290
Have you heard of this brand before?
291
It's a very popular brand.
292
We decided to check out Salty Girl,
293
which is a seafood restaurant highly recommended by my friends.
294
That was a delicious meal that we just had.
295
And now we are going to North End,
296
which is an area rich in history.
297
When I say rich in this context, I mean it has a lot of,
298
or it is abundant in history.
299
So I can't wait to show you, and I can't wait to experience it for the first time.
300
I heard that it is a very pretty neighborhood.
301
The wind has really died down now and there's more people out and about, which means people are outside.
302
Take a look.
303
Isn't it beautiful here?
304
We are in North End.
305
the kind of like little Italy of Boston.
306
There are many people standing outside of these restaurants which tells me that the food must be good there.
307
Oh I bet this place is good.
308
Best Italian sub in in Boston.
309
Sub is another word for sandwich,
310
but it comes on a specific type of bread.
311
And I believe sub is short for submarine.
312
We need to move out of the way because there is a car coming.
313
and now we are walking up what may be a residential neighborhood.
314
Look at this cute dog.
315
For my Brazil friends, there is a Brazil flag over there.
316
Here is the Peace Garden.
317
I guess it leads up to a church.
318
I am standing in front of Paul Revere's house.
319
He is the man that rode at midnight to warn that the British were coming.
320
And this began the start of the fight of America's independence.
321
Hello everyone!
322
Today I woke up at 6am,
323
around 6.10am and I am currently jet lagged.
324
Jet lagged is the term where when you travel and your brain is not yet used to the time zone.
325
I came from Los Angeles to Boston.
326
Boston is three hours ahead in time.
327
So if it's 6am here, it's 3am in LA.
328
And I haven't had caffeine today.
329
I did not drink my green tea because our schedule this morning was pretty busy.
330
After I woke up, I took a shower,
331
I brushed my teeth, I washed my face, and I put on my skincare products.
332
Then my husband
333
and I went down to the hotel lobby to catch a cab to meet my friend at the hotel
334
that she and her family are staying at.
335
After I met my friend and her family,
336
we drove together about 30 to 45 minutes outside of the city.
337
When I say the city, I mean Boston.
338
And that was the start of the Boston Marathon.
339
The weather was very cold.
340
Not the coldest that I've ever experienced.
341
As you can see outside, it's not snowing.
342
The weather is breezy.
343
It is chilly.
344
It is cold.
345
Are you familiar with the words breezy and chilly?
346
Think of breezy as breeze, which is another word for wind.
347
And chilly is chill, which is another word for cold.
348
So we have several ways to describe cold weather.
349
Luckily, the sun was partly shining through the clouds,
350
so it was keeping me somewhat warm, but not warm enough.
351
Our whole crew gathered around to find the best spot so that we can find our friend who's running the marathon.
352
He is considered an excellent runner,
353
and he started in the first wave,
354
which means that he came out with the first group of people in the marathon.
355
After waiting about 30 minutes,
356
he finally ran in front of us and we yelled and screamed his name and we cheered him on.
357
It's always nerve-wracking when we are anticipating him to run by us
358
because we only have one opportunity to see him and really cheer him on.
359
Luckily, we were able to spot his outfit.
360
We knew that he had a white hat, a red tank top, and red shoes.
361
After we saw him at the first checkpoint,
362
we got back into the car and we drove back to the city.
363
The finish line is in the city, so that is where we planned to see him next.
364
Our friend placed 995th out of 30,000 racers.
365
Do you know what I mean when I say placed?
366
In this context, it means that he was one of the top 1,000 runners out of 30,000.
367
So when you place, that is where your ranking is.
368
Unfortunately, I was not able to see him cross the finish line because I am too short.
369
I could not make my way to the front and there were so many people.
370
So instead, I will just have to watch a video
371
that my friend took of her husband running across the finish line because she did wiggle her way up to the front.
372
do you know the word wiggle wiggle looks like this
373
but she didn't actually wiggle her way to the front to
374
see him wiggle your way to the front is you you weave in and out to get to where you want to.
375
When you say wiggle, you are exaggerating.
376
It's just a fun word, you know?
377
And then we had to find him after he crossed the finish line.
378
Many or maybe even all of the neighboring streets were blocked off due to security reasons.
379
So we had to walk around many blocks to meet him at a safe area.
380
We met him at a park.
381
After we saw our friend, my husband and I went to grab lunch.
382
When I say grab lunch, I don't actually mean grabbing lunch.
383
This is what grabbing looks like.
384
It's just another way of saying that we got lunch.
385
and we went to the same spot
386
that we went to yesterday just to keep it simple
387
and it was also a healthy meal we walked many miles and my feet hurt i currently have hat head
388
which means that you wear a hat all day and it smushes your hair down.
389
Do you remember the word smush?
390
Last time I talked about this word, I used the analogy of a banana.
391
So imagine you have a banana in your hand and you squeeze it.
392
This is smushing.
393
you smush so the hat smushed my head and my hair
394
so now I have hat head I am now back at the hotel
395
and I am going to get ready to meet my friends for dinner we are going to eat at a Mediterranean restaurant.
396
So I'm very excited.
397
Tomorrow, my husband will be leaving for the airport while I take a road trip down the east coast to Baltimore,
398
Maryland, where my parents live.
399
I hope you enjoyed today's lesson.
400
We talked about some past tense as well as future tense verbs, so I hope that was helpful.
401
Please like, subscribe, and share this video, and I will see you next time.
402
Bye!
