Hey English learners!
2
Welcome to this A2 English listening practice video.
3
I hope you're doing great and that you're ready to practice your listening with another video.
4
Today I want to talk about flashcards.
5
Some people like flash cards,
6
some people don't like flashcards.
7
I recently started using flashcards at the beginning of this year.
8
So not that recently, but this year I started using flashcards.
9
And I want to talk a little bit about this topic,
10
about flashcards, and how they can help you as a language learner.
11
And I'm not saying that flash cards are right for everyone.
12
Some people do fine without flashcards,
13
and they succeed in their language learning without using flashcards.
14
But some people can benefit from them,
15
so I'd like to talk about that in today's video.
16
And I know that a lot of you want to improve your pronunciation in English,
17
and if that's you, if you want to pronounce things better and feel more comfortable with your pronunciation,
18
please check out my pronunciation seminars.
19
You can sign up for those by clicking on the link down below in the description below this video.
20
These pronunciation seminars that I make will really help you improve the way that you say things,
21
say words, say phrases and sentences in English.
22
So So please check those out.
23
Okay, let's talk about flashcards.
24
So in the past, I used flashcards.
25
I used them a couple times maybe when learning different languages,
26
but I never stuck with them,
27
meaning I never continued using them over a long period of time.
28
And I honestly didn't really like them that much.
29
And it was for different reasons,
30
but I decided this year to try using them again.
31
And I've been using them in a specific way to help me with my French.
32
So I use them every day, actually.
33
I try to do them once a day not miss a day.
34
I've been pretty good actually.
35
I haven't missed a day of doing my flashcards in a long time actually.
36
So I've been doing well with them.
37
I use Anki.
38
This is probably the most famous flashcard app.
39
There are some other popular ones as well.
40
I haven't tried them, but Anki is good.
41
It uses an SRS, a Spaced Repetition System,
42
and the way this works is that it shows you the words you need to review at the right time,
43
at the optimal time when you should review them based on some different things.
44
And so there are other apps that also use this type of spaced repetition and I think they're probably all pretty good.
45
Let me talk about how I use flashcards.
46
So I use them right now to help me practice my speaking, actually.
47
So I put the English side on the front,
48
and then I have to think of how to say that English phrase in French.
49
So I don't do it the opposite way.
50
I don't put the French side on the front and then think of what it means in English.
51
I did that years ago,
52
but that's not how I currently use flashcards.
53
I put the English side on the front and then I have to say that phrase in French.
54
So, as I said, I usually put a full phrase the front.
55
I don't just put a single word.
56
I put a phrase that contains a new word
57
that I want to learn or a new phrase that I want to learn,
58
a grammar structure perhaps.
59
Once in a while I'll even include two new things,
60
like two new words, in one sentence or one phrase.
61
And the way that I choose what to use to make these flashcards,
62
like which words, which phrases I want to learn,
63
this comes from my own speaking practice.
64
When I'm speaking and I try to say something but I I don't know how to say that word or that phrase.
65
I create a flashcard from that word or phrase.
66
So I know that when I review my flashcards,
67
I'm not just reviewing random words.
68
I'm reviewing words and phrases that are useful for me because I tried to say them and I couldn't.
69
So I know that I'm learning relevant words and phrases and so I'm filling in my gaps,
70
the gaps in my speech of things that I want to say but I can't say.
71
So I can do that based on my speaking practice with myself
72
because I speak to myself almost every day
73
and I can also find words
74
that I'm missing based on what I try to say in my conversations with my tutor
75
because I also speak to a French tutor.
76
So I do that and I review my flashcards once a day,
77
it usually doesn't take too long.
78
And some people like to make flashcards using pictures or sounds like audio flashcards or other things.
79
This is too much work for me to be honest.
80
I don't don't want to spend that much time creating flashcards,
81
so I don't do this.
82
I just put the phrase in English and then I need to say that in French when I review it.
83
I'm not using flashcards yet for Greek.
84
I started Greek recently and And there are,
85
for me, the reason why I don't use them yet for Greek is
86
because there are still way too many common words and phrases
87
that I still don't know
88
and I don't really want to make flashcards out of these words and phrases because I'm gonna learn them naturally
89
through listening and reading.
90
I think that over time,
91
over the next few months,
92
I'm gonna learn all of these really common words and phrases naturally just from seeing them over and over again.
93
So I don't think it's that necessary for me.
94
You can still use flashcards in the early phases of learning a language.
95
There's nothing wrong with that,
96
but I kind of prefer to do a lot of listening and reading,
97
and when I do that,
98
I'm exposed to these very common words and phrases and structures over and over again.
99
So it isn't that necessary to do some separate activity like flashcards to learn phrases
100
and words like the word interesting or something.
101
Like I'm gonna see that word over and over again when I read things,
102
when I listen, so I probably don't need to make flashcards for those types of words.
103
I just need to do my daily listening and reading practice.
104
But later on, I will most likely use flashcards for Greek,
105
when I'm learning words and phrases that are important for me
106
but maybe they aren't so common so I don't see them so often,
107
then for me that's when I think flashcards are really handy or really useful.
108
So that's just my opinion but that works for me.
109
They really work for me.
110
Flashcards work for me at my level in French
111
because I'm learning less common words and I don't need to review them
112
that much but I just need to see them again before I forget them
113
or maybe a little after I forget them and just trust the spaced repetition
114
schedule how it decides to show me the words
115
when it decides to show them to me this spaced repetition
116
shows you the card at the optimal time I think around the time that you're probably gonna forget that word.
117
So this depends on the card and in some apps you can change this I think.
118
Like maybe you just want to review the same words every day.
119
I don't change this.
120
I just trust how Anki decides to schedule my reviews.
121
So some people change that.
122
I don't.
123
I just trust it.
124
I think that it's good to review words
125
around the time you will probably forget them or even a little after you've already forgotten them.
126
I think it's really powerful to forget a word and then relearn it.
127
I already talked about this previously when I talked about relearning Greek.
128
When I relearn these words that I had previously forgotten,
129
they feel so much stronger in my brain now.
130
So I think it's powerful to relearn words that you have forgotten.
131
This isn't a big deal it's not a horrible thing to forget words or forget phrases.
132
When you relearn them, many times they will become just more solid in your brain.
133
Okay?
134
And you can use flashcards at any time throughout the day.
135
One great thing about flashcards
136
is that you can review them when you're doing things or when you're waiting in places and you have nothing to do.
137
When you're waiting in line,
138
this is a great time to do flashcards.
139
When you're on the bus,
140
when you are doing something that doesn't require your attention
141
and you can pull out your flashcards for a few minutes and review some cards.
142
It's great.
143
It's a good way to take advantage of those times throughout the day when you're just waiting and you can't do anything,
144
that's a good time to review flashcards.
145
I'll be honest, it's not the funnest thing.
146
Reviewing flashcards is not the most interesting activity,
147
but it has helped me.
148
I've seen the benefits of using flashcards.
149
I've been able to use phrases that I learned from my flashcards,
150
and I use them with my tutor for the first time
151
and it feels good to use that phrase that I reviewed and learned and I use it correctly.
152
So I've seen the benefits and depending on your personality,
153
your preferences, what you like and maybe where you are in your language learning process,
154
maybe flashcards could be helpful for you.
155
Maybe you can try them out and see if you like them.
156
So they're not for everyone but I think it's worth it to try them out and see if they work for you.
157
So hopefully
158
you enjoyed this video and I hope this was good advice and I know it was good practice for your listening.

Kontext & Hintergrund

  • „Was bedeutet dieses Wort?“
  • „Ich möchte meine Aussprache verbessern.“
  • „Hast du Tipps zum Lernen?“

Schritt-für-Schritt Shadowing-Anleitung
