1
Critical thinking is the careful and rational analysis of a situation that results in you making good short and long -term decisions.
2
But as we all know, none of us are always making good decisions, and some of us are almost always making bad decisions.
3
So I think the best way to explain it is by looking at the stages of thinking
4
and the thoughts that would characterize each of those levels.
5
So the first level of thinking is basically no thinking at all.
6
It's a straight line from emotion to action without any further consideration.
7
This isn't all bad as it's responsible for a lot of instinctive functions like crying
8
when you're sad or hitting your desk when you're angry or Yeah, regardless, we all think at this level sometimes, but some people seem to be characterized by it.
9
Which means if someone says something like, "Wow, you don't believe they actually landed on the moon, do you?" You should probably stop talking to that person because really,
10
what kind of idiot still believes in the moon?
11
The second level of thinking is some thinking.
12
You haven't really checked all the facts down to their roots, but you know when things make sense and when they don't.
13
You don't let the headlines tell you what to think, you read the comment section for that.
14
And you don't cite Wikipedia for your essays, you cite the references underneath.
15
When you have a problem, you kind of just treat the symptoms and don't go much further than that.
16
But all in all, your life is very practical.
17
You might be paying 20k a year for school and are worried that you won't get a job.
18
But hey, 20k a year for hope is a fucking bargain.
19
The third level of thinking is critical thinking.
20
You think things through to their logical conclusion and you act accordingly, all the while not deliberating over small details.
21
If you feel sick, you go to the doctor.
22
If you feel sad, you ask your friends and family for support.
23
And if you don't like watching ads on YouTube, you get adblocked because you know if you're watching a popular YouTube channel that people like, they're probably demonetized anyway.
24
You don't drunk text your ex because you've never had a failed relationship.
25
And when you're at a job interview, it goes, Hey, what's your biggest weakness?
26
I don't really learn from my mistakes.
27
And why is that?
28
because I don't make any.
29
Nevertheless, despite your perfect existence, your peers might resent you for being flawless in a way that's blindingly superior, and yet somehow still humble.
30
While this might seem like the end -all be -all of critical thought, it certainly isn't, which is why we also have the bonus level of thinking, overthinking.
31
This type of thinking tries to address all your simple problems with disproportionately complex solutions.
32
Your waiter says enjoy your meal, and when you say "thanks, you too," he laughs and moves on, and you never go back to that restaurant ever again.
33
If you're on a coffee date
34
and the girl says "why don't we get ice cream instead," you would gently decline because she's deviating from the script.
35
Before you let loose and dance at a party, you have to watch a few hundred tutorials to make sure you're letting loose properly,
36
delete your history when someone asks to use your phone.
37
Now, while you can't really stop yourself from overthinking, if there's something you're worried about, it usually gets better over time because you learn the bad stuff you are worrying about almost never happens.
38
a really eye -opening moment for me was when I said to my friend, "Man, I can't stop worrying about what other people think of me." And he said, Don't worry, man, nobody thinks about you.
39
Well, the delivery could maybe use some work.
40
It's definitely something worth thinking about.
