Hello and welcome to our video summary of The Physician's Tale.
2
This is part of our Canterbury Tales video series where we
3
look at each of the 24 stories written in The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer
4
and should you want to find our analysis
5
and summaries of other stories in The Canterbury Tales do make sure you check out our channel
6
and you will find it all there.
7
So in this video I'll summarize all you need to know about this story
8
and I'll also provide some analysis that you should be aware of
9
when reading and writing about this tale so let's get started
10
so the physician is a very well read
11
and intelligent man who knows much about medicine
12
and the other science he loves money however and makes quite a profit
13
when the plague comes round and breaks out in his story it goes thus
14
so there once was a knight named virginius and he had one daughter named Virginia.
15
One day Appius who is a judge sees her and decides he must have her.
16
He hires Claudius, a local black guard.
17
Claudius accuses Virginius of having stolen Virginia from him.
18
He claims she was his servant and Virginius has been lying about her being his daughter.
19
Appius as a judge declares him guilty and orders him to bring Virginia to the court.
20
Her father returns her and tells her she will either die
21
or be taken by them and she replies that she would rather die and then faints.
22
Her father cuts off her head and brings it to the court.
23
The court orders that he be hung for murder.
24
Some of the citizens though notice Appius' is sneaking and imprison him and once there Appius hangs himself.
25
Claudius is granted exile instead of hanging and the physician ends with the proverb the wages of sin is death.
26
Now many experts do consider this one of the worst of
27
the Canterbury tales as the story is not very well constructed
28
and there's not a strong moral or philosophical topic it deals with.
29
Also the ending proverb doesn't quite fit with the story as Claudius
30
and his daughter really never sinned and didn't deserve their fate.
31
Overall this tale is much more crude and for us as readers it can be quite unsettling.
32
So that's it for now, thank you so much for listening.

  • "So in this video I'll summarize all you need to know about this story and I'll also provide some analysis that you should be aware of when reading and writing about this tale so let's get started."
  • "Her father returns her and tells her she will either die or be taken by them and she replies that she would rather die and then faints."
  • "Now many experts do consider this one of the worst of the Canterbury tales as the story is not very well constructed and there's not a strong moral or philosophical topic it deals with." – "Do consider" betont die Aussage, was in gesprochener Sprache häufiger vorkommt als man denkt.

4. Wiederhole, bis es flüssig klingt. Fange mit kurzen Sätzen an (z. B. "Hello and welcome to our video summary") und arbeite dich langsam zu längeren Passagen hoch.
