1
Hey kids!
2
In today's video we'll be learning about greenhouse gases.
3
Are you ready?
4
Let's begin!
5
Earth is like a big cozy house house.
6
Just like your house has a roof and walls to keep you warm, Earth has something similar called the atmosphere.
7
The atmosphere is made up of different gases that surround our planet and help keep it warm enough for us to live.
8
Now think about a greenhouse.
9
A greenhouse is a special glass building where people grow plants.
10
The glass lets sunlight in and keeps the warmth inside, making it nice and warm for the plants.
11
Greenhouse gases in our atmosphere work in a similar way.
12
They let sunlight come in and then trap some of the heat keeping our planet warm.
13
Some common greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide which comes from things like cars and factories,
14
methane which comes from cows and other animals, and water vapor.
15
Without these gases, Earth would be too cold for us to live.
16
But if we have too many greenhouse gases, it can get too warm which can cause problems for our planet.
17
Greenhouse gases are like the blanket around Earth.
18
It helps to keep it at just the right temperature for us to live and grow.
19
Now here are fun facts about greenhouse gases.
20
Ancient air.
21
Scientists can study tiny bubbles of ancient air trapped in ice cores from Antarctica
22
and Greenland to learn about greenhouse gases from thousands of years ago.
23
Cow power.
24
Cows produce a lot of methane through their digestive processes.
25
Each cow can produce up to 100 kilograms of methane a year.
26
Old Carbon Fossil fuels are called that because they are made from plants and animals that lived millions of years ago.
27
When we burn them for energy, we release carbon dioxide that has been trapped underground for a very long time.
28
Helpful Ozone Ozone is a greenhouse gas high up in the atmosphere that protects us from the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays.
29
However, at ground level, it's a pollutant that can harm our health.
30
Volcanoes When volcanoes erupt, they release large amounts of greenhouse gases.
31
Examples are carbon dioxide and water vapor into the atmosphere.
32
Supergas Nitrous oxide, another greenhouse gas, is sometimes called laughing gas because it's used as an anesthetic in dentistry.
33
It's also released from agriculture activities and is much more effective at trapping heat than carbon dioxide.
34
And that is all for today's video.
35
I hope you enjoyed learning about greenhouse gases today.
36
Take care now.

Bye-bye.
