1
Hey kids!
2
In today's video, we will be learning about shadows. Are you ready?
3
Let's begin!
4
A shadow is a dark area that forms when light is blocked by an object.
5
Light usually travels in straight lines, but when something blocks it, like a ball, it can't pass through.
6
The area behind that object becomes darker, and that's what we call a shadow.
7
Let's go over how shadows are formed.
8
To make a shadow, you need three things.
9
One, a source of light.
10
A good example is a lamp.
11
2. An object to block the light. And 3.
12
A surface for the shadow to appear on.
13
When light hits the object, some of it can't go through, so a shadow appears on the surface behind it.
14
Let's try another example.
15
If you hold your hand under a flashlight, you'll see a shadow of your hand on the wall or table.
16
That's because your hand is blocking the light from reaching that spot.
17
Why do shadows change size and shape?
18
Have you ever noticed that your shadow looks long in the morning and afternoon but short at noon?
19
That's because the sun changes its position in the sky during the day.
20
In the morning and afternoon, the sun is lower in the sky.
21
Your shadow stretches and becomes longer.
22
At noon, the sun is high above, so your shadow is short and small.
23
So your shadow changes depending on the angle of the light.
24
Transparent, translucent, and opaque objects Not everything makes a shadow the same way.
25
Transparent objects like glass let all the light pass through so they make no shadow.
26
Translucent objects like thin cloth let some light through so they make a faint shadow.
27
Opaque objects like your hand block all the light, so they make a dark shadow.
28
Now here are fun facts about shadows.
29
Astronauts on the moon have very dark shadows because there's no atmosphere to scatter sunlight like on Earth.
30
In ancient times, people used shadows to tell time.
31
They built a tool called a sundial which uses the sun's shadow to show the hour of the day.
32
And that is all for today's video.
33
I hope you enjoyed learning about shadows today.
