A shadow is a dark area that forms when light is blocked by an object.

Your shadow stretches and becomes longer.

At noon, the sun is high above, so your shadow is short and small.

So your shadow changes depending on the angle of the light.

Transparent, translucent, and opaque objects Not everything makes a shadow the same way.

Transparent objects like glass let all the light pass through so they make no shadow.

Translucent objects like thin cloth let some light through so they make a faint shadow.

Opaque objects like your hand block all the light, so they make a dark shadow.

Astronauts on the moon have very dark shadows because there's no atmosphere to scatter sunlight like on Earth.

In ancient times, people used shadows to tell time.

They built a tool called a sundial which uses the sun's shadow to show the hour of the day.
