1
Well, you're
Bueno, tú eres
2
right, of course.
Claro, por supuesto.
3
A story is far more complex.
4
I mean, a good story would have many kinds of nuances of meaning relating to the psychologies of the characters,
5
the sociology of their society, all kinds of morals or ethical values that are at play.
6
And so indeed, a story could be far richer than a simple sentence.
7
But for the purposes of understanding the story you're writing at the very heart of it,
8
in order to create a work that resonates with all of these various meanings, you have to understand the controlling idea, the core meaning.
9
And what all stories say is how
10
and why life changes in terms of whatever value is at stake in the character's life.
11
All stories make that statement, how and why life changes in the value charge of the character's lives.
12
And so the one sentence statement, first of all, identifies the value.
13
So for example, let's say it's a love story,
14
such as Notting Hill, and the value at stake in that, of course, is love, And ultimately,
15
it has a positive charge.
16
At the end of the story, they are together, married, she's pregnant, child on the way, happily ever after.
17
That's a positive ending love story.
18
Fine.
19
Now, how and why?
20
What happened in that story that brought about love in a positive charge at the end.
21
And what happens is that she sacrifices her fame, her life as a movie star,
22
to instead live in London, not traveling around the world, become pregnant, love her husband.
23
She sacrifices her career, her fame, to some degree at least in order to be together with him 12 months of the year in london
24
and so the meaning of that story love brings meaning and enrichment to the life when we are willing to sacrifice
25
our needs for the person we love love triumphs through self-sacrifice in one sentence now you could take notting hill
26
and expand it into all kinds of commentary on indeed the place of fame in the world, the difficult pressures that women are under,
27
especially when they achieve fame and fortune, that now they're being asked to sacrifice it for the man they love, and on and on.
28
You could write a dissertation out of that film.
29
But what it says is that love brings meaning to our life when we sacrifice for the person we love, in one sentence.
