Shadowing Practice: The exact moment I destroyed my college career - Learn English Speaking with Video

1
So I've just entered my fifth year of college, and by God, I am completely cooked.
2
You know, sometimes life throws these curveballs at you, that you could never predict, that cause you to rethink your entire reality,
3
and make impulsive decisions that destroy all of your future prospects.
4
Like a big deadline you completely forgot about, or you hang out with the wrong people at a party.
5
For me, it happened earlier this year, during this one specific moment, in which I almost got run over by an old man in a truck.
6
I am completely serious right now, and I know you probably have questions, so please, please, sit back and allow me to indulge you in my tale of academic misery.
7
Now, for context, school and I have never got along.
8
Something about my brain is just fundamentally incompatible with the modern education system.
9
As long as I can remember, I've clawed my way through the years, barely passing my classes.
10
And I always beat myself up over it as if somehow despite everything I'm still capable of getting good grades,
11
which is why when I got into college I chose engineering of all things to study.
12
I was like, alright Cooper, this is the time to shine I'm really gonna turn a new leaf and be a good student.
13
Yeah, so that lasted uh three months Um, it turns out you need to actually be smart to do engineering
14
So ever since then I've just been aimlessly changing my major every couple semesters And this whole time, I've just been wondering, like, what am I doing here, you know?
15
What am I actually working towards?
16
Nothing!
17
Nothing!
18
NOTHING!
19
Which brings us to last semester, when I had to write this dumbass paper for my required Philosophy of Action class.
20
Which, hey, little side tangent here, the most mind-numbingly boring philosophy topic of all time.
21
You wouldn't think that by hearing the name, but it is!
22
It took every ounce of my strength to force myself to care enough about it to finish it in time.
23
And then the teacher passed them all back and was like, Great work everyone!
24
Now you have to take all the notes I gave you and rewrite the entire thing!
25
And the revision is due in one week!
26
So long story short, I did not do this revision.
27
I couldn't even get myself to start it.
28
I remember I spent the final night before the deadline agonizing in my room producing music, you know, instead of studying.
29
And then in a flash of heavenly insight, I realized that actually, if I don't want to write this revision, I can just not do it!
30
And I felt this beautiful sense of freedom wash over me.
31
But this was not the moment I was telling you about, where I decided to ruin all my future career prospects.
32
Oh no no no no no!
33
That moment occurred the very next day on my way to class.
34
You see, it was time to go turn in this blank paper that I did not write.
35
So I grabbed Carla and headed to class.
36
And then, okay, picture this.
37
There's this one road I have to cross to get to campus.
38
It's just a crosswalk at a small intersection.
39
It's very visible.
40
And there's literally a stop sign there, right?
41
Like if you're driving and you see someone crossing, you have three to five business days to slow down.
42
So I'm approaching this crosswalk, and I look ahead, and I see that someone else is currently crossing it.
43
So in my brain, I'm like, okay, this means it's safe for me to cross too.
44
But no, this decaying old fart, whose license should have been revoked 20 years ago,
45
comes barreling down the street in this shitbox truck that looks like the doors are about to fall off.
46
And the other guy crossing had to jump backwards to avoid getting hit by this dude
47
but I didn't have time to slow down, I was gunning it.
48
So I just had to commit to not being flattened, and I swear to god, it missed me by less than a foot.
49
Like I felt the exhaust behind my ankles, that's how close it was.
50
And I know that the old guy saw me too
51
because his window was rolled down and I heard him make a noise as he passed me by, like, ehhhhhhhhh!
52
So he did not think to hit the brakes, but he did think to scream about it.
53
You know how your life flashes before your eyes when you're about to die?
54
Well here, it was more like my death flash before my eyes.
55
Like, I saw myself getting hit, and then I saw the old dude standing over me like, Oh shit, I hit him, oh shit, uh...
56
And I'm just like unable to speak, just staring at him and bleeding out and dying.
57
And so, I just stopped Carla, and sat there on the curb, feeling the sun on my face.
58
And I thought to myself like, dude, I almost just died, going to a class that I don't care about, in order to turn in a blank essay I did not write,
59
in order to get a degree that I have absolutely no interest in.
60
And that was the moment.
61
I decided to drop out of college.
62
And bro, I was this close to doing it.
63
But also, I'm like four years into this, and I'm so close to graduating, you know?
64
It's like, sunken cost fallacy, I guess.
65
So that led me into my advisor's office a few months ago.
66
I was like, alright dude, I'm trying to get my degree as quickly as humanly possible.
67
Can you help me?
68
And the advisor was like, SHIT I GOT YOU!
69
So there's basically this fake made up degree we can put you in
70
and it's gonna make all your credits count and it's called Duh, get this It's called Interdisciplinary Studies And then she was like No,
71
no, no, yeah This degree is actually SO useful!
72
Pinky promise!
73
So yeah, your boy is now officially an interdisciplinary study student.
74
Ha!
75
Try to contain your jealousy!
76
Employers are practically throwing themselves at me right now!
77
And this is where I'm at now, guys.
78
Like, I'm graduating next spring with the most stupid degree ever!
79
With zero employable skills, other than making funny music and animations on the internet.
80
Uhhh...
81
On a completely unrelated note, I've decided to start a Patreon!
82
That's right!
83
You can now pay me your money!
84
So that I can afford to eat food!
85
But I don't want to just do that without offering anything in return.
86
So, first of all, my background music.
87
Which I produced myself, if you didn't know.
88
A lot of people have asked me where they can listen to it, and I've had trouble figuring out where to actually put it.
89
So, that's all going on Patreon.
90
You can listen to it, and download it, and goon to- Some of it may end up being released officially at some point, but definitely not all of it.
91
So I'm just gonna use Patreon as like a big music archive.
92
And part of the reason for that is
93
that I actually do have more serious music projects that I will be releasing officially soon. So, huh.
94
Prepare yourself for Cooper Galani's animated music videos to be dropping on this channel soon.
95
Uh, I'm so deadass.
96
Bring band-aids for your ears in case they start to bleed.
97
Also, I'll post little updates on Patreon for like what I'm working on
98
and like fun little doodles and shit So
99
if you like what I do and you'd want to help me keep doing it
100
And you are in the financial position to do so you can do that on Patreon and yeah, that's all bye

Understanding the Speaker's Journey: A Relatable College Tale

The speaker’s tone is raw and humorous, making it easy to connect with, while the narrative flows naturally, mirroring how people talk in daily life. This makes it an excellent resource for learning English with YouTube, as you’ll pick up phrases used in everyday situations.

Top 5 Phrases for Daily Communication

  • "Completely cooked": A casual way to say "exhausted" or "overwhelmed" (e.g., "After finals week, I’m completely cooked").

Step-by-Step Shadowing Guide to Master This Video

Shadowing (or shadowspeak) is a great way to improve English pronunciation and fluency. Here’s how to use this video:

  1. Listen once: Focus on the story to understand the context. Notice the speaker’s pauses and emphasis.
  2. Break it into chunks: Pause after 5-10 seconds. Repeat the line out loud, mimicking the tone and speed. Pay attention to phrases like "I am completely serious"—the stress on "completely" adds emotion.
  3. Focus on connected speech: The speaker often links words (e.g., "gonna turn" instead of "going to turn"). Try to copy this to sound more natural.
  4. Record yourself: Compare your recording to the video. Notice differences in pronunciation (like "shitbox"—a slang term—spoken quickly) and adjust.
  5. Practice daily: Spend 10 minutes a day on this video. Use a shadowing site if you need tools to slow down the audio, but start with the original speed to build confidence.

With consistent practice, you’ll not only learn new phrases but also sound more like a native speaker. Remember, every small step counts—keep going!
