Shadowing Practice: Why Kiwi Birds Are Weird... - Learn English Speaking with Video

Creando lección...
1
This bird should not exist, and breaks every single rule of being a bird.
2
Meet the kiwi.
3
A bird that lays an egg so big, its organs can barely fit in its own body.
4
And somehow, that's not even the weirdest thing about them.
5
Let's start with their feathers.
6
Unlike normal flying birds, kiwis have these weird strand or hair-like feathers, almost making them look like tiny mammals.
7
And it's not just their feathers, even their bones are mammal-like, filled with marrow and built heavier instead of light and hollow.
8
And they get weirder, as they have wings that are completely useless only about one inch long so they can't fly, but have super strong legs instead,
9
allowing them to quickly run around the forest floor and yes, also kick to defend themselves.
10
They're also the only bird in the entire world with nostrils on the end of their beak, have cat-like whiskers on their face, are mostly nocturnal, often sleep standing up, and live in burrows underground.
11
But the craziest of all, not only do their eggs take up about 20% of their entire body, making it physically impossible to eat for days, but have survived exactly like this for millions of years,
12
which unfortunately might end in extinction soon thanks to the invasive species that we brought.
