That makes me happy.

We will have a bit of Beth Dutton in this, I think.

Well, just hearing your voice right now.

I mean, I couldn't believe it.

I knew that you had an accent.

I knew that you had done the work.

And working on an accent is so hard.

It's such an art because you can't get lost in things and lost in the moment.

Your accent's gonna come up.

You have to be on constant vigilant watch to do an accent.

And what shocked me is, I would have never guessed you had an accent.

Well, that's thanks to my dialect coach because she's amazing, Jessica Drake.

Yeah.

You have a cadence with Beth Dutton that is Western,

Southern Americana, but not, cause Montana's not.

Right, so we were really going for a Montana accent, but she's educated.

She's from a very, very wealthy ranching family.

She's somebody, she's not, I wasn't gonna go like, you know, howdy ma'am.

You know, it wasn't that for me, but I certainly wanted to get that Montana dialect correct.

But for Beth, it was more about the voice because she smokes a little bit, she drinks a lot of bourbon.

Yeah.

So it's a little...

I'm naturally a lot sort of higher pitched than Beth.

And Beth is, you know, she's a bit more like, she comes from here.

She has a rasp.

Yeah.

And like a guttural sound.

And it was, I kind of listened to Kevin a lot because he really deepened his voice for John Dutton.

You're right.

What was one of the first things that you decided Beth Dutton will have this, but she will not have that?

Well, she's written and created by Taylor Sheridan.

He really is, I mean, we sort of Frankenstein her together really, but everything she says, everything she does is from his imagination.

And so when I first got the role and then I first started to play her in season one,

seven years ago, nobody knew it was gonna be this success.

You know?

You mean with its own Monopoly game that I play obsessively?

Yeah.

I take this everywhere I go.

My friends and I play it like ad nauseam.

It's our favorite game ever.

Do you get to be a character?

No, you get to be like a piece.

Okay.

That's a shame.

They should be like little rips and little deaths.

I would prefer it maybe I'll create one.

Yeah, we'll do another addition.

Yes, we do.

But I mean, by the way, notice who's front and center on the box.

Just take a look at the box.

It's like, this is a testament.

When you see this, do you think, oh, maybe I really did a good job.

They've put me front and center here.

So I'm gonna be really honest with you.

I try not look at it too much.

That's okay, I'll stare at it for you.

No, no, it's not necessarily the Monopoly board, but like, as an actor, how do you then begin to go back and play that character if people,

they really have an opinion on her and they love her, the audience.

I've had so many people, they started to, at the beginning, they didn't love her.

I went on a seven year journey, six year journey with the audience.

And once they started to understand who she was, then they kind of got on board with her.

And your risk paid off.

Yes, it was a definite risk.

I definitely had to not care if anyone liked her or not at the beginning, because I knew who she was on the inside.

Which is so hard to do, because I think we all would prefer if people liked and accepted us.

And I think in order to get people really truly behind you,

you have to exhibit a type of strength where you will recruit people to get behind you.

Yeah, and flaws.

You know, there's so many like, and there's an authenticity to Beth that she really doesn't,

she's unencumbered by what people think of her and she's obviously not a real human being.

So there's freedom to be that.

And then Taylor layered her with this sort of hero attribute.

She's sort of the fiercest soldier.

She's probably the one with the most testosterone on the show, but she's innately female.

She's all woman.

And I wanted to make sure that that was- Douglas, you were in the way.

Yeah. But I love you.

I like how his cowboy hat's just coming off.

Yeah.

It would be very easy to make her a caricature very just hard and tough.

So I was like, we're gonna do the feminine dresses.

We're gonna keep her as soft.

And then so she could be very also soft with rip.

And I think those choices really pay off in the new season.

When you come on the screen, you are in that signature dress.

And I noticed also that you wear a lot of long sweaters, which has a softness to it.

So I was single for a couple of years and I had gone through heartbreak, like we all have.

And I was just got to the point where I had gone, yeah, this single life is fabulous.

And I honestly thought that he was, I thought he was Texan, the wedding was in Texas.

Well, not directly, obviously she's written, her experience is very different.

We're different animals.

I love her, I understand her, getting in the skin of this primal woman is a lot of fun.

She's invigorating, but she's also exhausting.

And you know, as actors, all we've got is our own experience, our own hearts, our own souls and minds.

And so when you're drawing on things, it's not like I'm thinking about an experience I've had, but it's there in your DNA.

It's there in your blood.

And so when you're moved by something, and I'm very moved by Beth, she breaks my heart.

I've really, I love her.

I love her strength, her audacity to survive in the way she does.

I just literally think about something hard that I dealt with and it just gets me there.

I had gone through just before we started filming, the year before we started, I got that job.

I had gone through some things in my own personal life.

I was in deep grief and I hadn't figured out who I was beyond that in that moment.

And I was in a fog at that moment.

And then this character lands in my lap.

And I'm like, well, what am I gonna do with this?

And she became this sort of life raft for me.

So I got to sort of hide in her for a minute

while I came back to life and I found my own strength and my own happiness again.

And so that's what I wish for her, even though she's a make-believe character because she helped me so much, her fierceness.

Some of Beth's sexiness, some of Beth's courage, some of the things she wouldn't, maybe you wouldn't do, but she does and it gives you something in your real life.

And I felt everything that she felt and I lost myself in her for all these years.
