okay so my room is not ready
2
so I want to go out luckily the hotel has a locker room a luggage room
3
but you can keep your luggage
4
and go do whatever you know till it's time to check into the room
5
so that's exactly what I did wait am I going in the wrong direction let me check where are we
6
okay i'm going in the right direction oh my goodness i'm so smart so i want to join a tour
7
a walk tour to just see the city a little bit and the meeting point is 16 minutes walk away
8
so i need to go join them
9
and i'm like 16 minutes oh my goodness i'm going to be late
10
if i don't hurry up i have 15 minutes to get there and it's
11
so far i feel like i'm going to see everything before i even get to the meeting point
12
when i see everything on my own already but anyway let's go
13
look how gorgeous this city is look at that look at that
14
Guys believe me when I tell you that this city is beautiful.
15
It's beautiful.
16
Oh Gorgeous
17
Oh, yeah, this is a country of bold bold started here in Estonia I'm sorry.
18
This Tallinn old town is gorgeous.
19
I wonder if people are still living in these buildings.
20
It's so gorgeous.
21
This should be my group.
22
Let's see.
23
You can learn how to defend the word.
24
Not sure you saw but later walking around the city.
25
Just keep your eyes open for him.
26
The difference is the little man.
27
As well as the finish.
28
At the end of the quarter, I'm very down.
29
I'm very down.
30
I'm very down.
31
I'm very down.
32
I'm very down.
33
They've only learned in the future.
34
Yeah.
35
Yeah.
36
It's not the same.
37
Yeah, I think.
38
No, it wasn't quite the same.
39
But in terms of the way the man's.
40
Oh, oh, yeah.
41
Then you get sweetened.
42
Okay, we're just going to pause here just briefly.
43
I want to make sure you guys can see these photographs on the wall here.
44
So make sure you can see these pictures.
45
A couple pictures here as well, but these are the most important ones.
46
Can you all see these photographs on the wall?
47
If not, have a quick look.
48
Of course what you're looking at are photographs from very recently, just a few decades ago, in fact just over 80 years ago the bombing of Tallinn in the Second World War.
49
It was like being told to switch sides in the middle of a battle.
50
I think it was 1944.
51
Which must have been awful.
52
But they then stayed independent.
53
Tallinn, Estonia rather, probably would have tried the same thing.
54
They were bigger, much bigger.
55
Okay, so up here at the top of the steps.
56
We very clearly left the old town now.
57
And we're standing somewhere else, very important.
58
The entire square behind you, just to mention the area that we were at before I talked about,
59
this is an area which is the biggest city space in the London town where you have events.
60
Like at the moment we've got the volleyball, that is approximately, if it's the same as last year, that's approximately 800 tonnes per fan that they've been here for a week.
61
They've done the same this year, the volleyball pitch for a few more days.
62
But everything else as well, so music, stages built here in the summertime, Big TV screen built on the end and showing the force.
63
I'm a British star.
64
I'm a British star.
65
I'm a British star.
66
This is 14th place.
67
So we are going to align our group.
68
We know as the records, the state King Valdemar II came on his crusade to Estonia from the north.
69
So you get this interesting celebration, which is odd because the Estonians shouldn't really be celebrating the time
70
when they were invaded and occupied by the old knights back in the 13th.
71
Can you see, obviously, you've got the one in the middle.
72
We all know this one, red with the white cross, but also you've got these two symbols as well.
73
This is actually the coat of arms of Estonia, the national coat of arms.
74
This is actually the coat of arms of Tallinn, the city, the main coat of arms.
75
This is the lesser coat of arms of Tallinn, but both of these are the coats of arms of Tallinn.
76
And these, if you look at the Danish coat of arms today, the modern Danish coat of arms, you've still got the gold shield and the three blue lions there as well.
77
So the Danish brought this with them and it stuck in, and that's why even today it's the Estonian coat of arms actually kind of taken from the Danish.
78
What about this one?
79
Well actually it's the opposite story with the most famous one.
80
The red one with the white cross actually is the other way around completely.
81
The Danish didn't have this flag when they came to Estonia, but when they left Estonia, the anniversary of when the Danes got their flag that we all now know today.
82
A lot of people aren't familiar with this.
83
If you're Danish you probably know this story.
84
If you're Estonian...
85
The old Danish fortress is a very good place to be
86
in the middle of the old Danish fortress piece of the fortress, the tower, the wall.
87
There used to be of course on this site a four -walled, four -towered castle and interestingly it depends on what angle you're looking at this building from.
88
From here you can see just a palace with a random bit of castle on the corner.
89
From certain other angles you can't even see the palace at all.
90
It's just a big castle.
91
It depends where you're looking at it from and actually
92
because of this we're going to go into the garden here on this side in just a minute
93
and have a look around the corner.
94
There's another very good view of a piece of the So kind of both Castle Palace 5050.
95
It was a big old ruined crumbling castle when the Russians showed up Because it had already been here for centuries
96
Rewind back to when the Danish built it
97
and even they weren't the first people they built it on the site of the old Estonian
98
Just to set the scene for you the Danish arrived and hopes they didn't have to fight a battle they negotiated
99
They know it sounds funny to everyone else because it sounds a bit hippie, but for them it's only 50 % hippie.
100
The other half is actually quite serious, they love it, they feel something deeper, they know there's something there, and that's why it's a misnomer, don't go away thinking this is the third most atheist country in the world.
101
Whether that was ever true, we will never know sadly of course, but maybe they weren't so crazy to think this,
102
because actually even today, Olaf's church in Tallinn is still in the top 20 tallest churches in the world.
103
Number 19, but still in the top 20.
104
Which is actually fairly high on the list, there's a few probably million churches in the world, I don't even know.
105
So to be in the top 20 is an achievement and that's the adjusted height.
106
It's 124 metres.
107
Originally it was actually an extra 26 metres taller.
108
That is a significant chunk.
109
It was actually around 150 originally, and that was back in 1450.
110
1625 they made it shorter because it was hit by lightning at that point at least 10 times on record.
111
Three of which it basically burned the entire church down.
112
It rebuilt multiple times.
113
So they had to make it shorter, but originally if it was still at all height, it probably would still be maybe even in the top five tallest churches in the world today which is still quite impressive,
114
does give certain weight to their claim back then in 1450.
115
Maybe it was the tallest building any of them had ever seen in the known world at the time.
116
Maybe still today, who knows.
117
You can go to the top, it is a good view, it's just a very windy view, you have to climb too -
118
The cabin preserve is a little niche museum.
119
Very niche because when you go up there you don't really learn about what life was like under the Soviet Union.
120
You learn what it was like to be a tourist staying in this hotel in the 1970s
121
or 80s under the Soviet Union.
