okay so my room is not ready

so I want to go out luckily the hotel has a locker room a luggage room

and go do whatever you know till it's time to check into the room

when i see everything on my own already but anyway let's go

This Tallinn old town is gorgeous.

Of course what you're looking at are photographs from very recently, just a few decades ago, in fact just over 80 years ago the bombing of Tallinn in the Second World War.

It was like being told to switch sides in the middle of a battle.

I think it was 1944.

Which must have been awful.

But they then stayed independent.

Tallinn, Estonia rather, probably would have tried the same thing.

They were bigger, much bigger.

Okay, so up here at the top of the steps.

We very clearly left the old town now.

And we're standing somewhere else, very important.

The entire square behind you, just to mention the area that we were at before I talked about,

this is an area which is the biggest city space in the London town where you have events.

Like at the moment we've got the volleyball, that is approximately, if it's the same as last year, that's approximately 800 tonnes per fan that they've been here for a week.

They've done the same this year, the volleyball pitch for a few more days.

But everything else as well, so music, stages built here in the summertime, Big TV screen built on the end and showing the force.

So we are going to align our group.

We know as the records, the state King Valdemar II came on his crusade to Estonia from the north.

So you get this interesting celebration, which is odd because the Estonians shouldn't really be celebrating the time

when they were invaded and occupied by the old knights back in the 13th.

Can you see, obviously, you've got the one in the middle.

We all know this one, red with the white cross, but also you've got these two symbols as well.

This is actually the coat of arms of Estonia, the national coat of arms.

This is actually the coat of arms of Tallinn, the city, the main coat of arms.

This is the lesser coat of arms of Tallinn, but both of these are the coats of arms of Tallinn.

And these, if you look at the Danish coat of arms today, the modern Danish coat of arms, you've still got the gold shield and the three blue lions there as well.

So the Danish brought this with them and it stuck in, and that's why even today it's the Estonian coat of arms actually kind of taken from the Danish.

What about this one?

Well actually it's the opposite story with the most famous one.

The red one with the white cross actually is the other way around completely.

The Danish didn't have this flag when they came to Estonia, but when they left Estonia, the anniversary of when the Danes got their flag that we all now know today.

A lot of people aren't familiar with this.

If you're Danish you probably know this story.

If you're Estonian...

The old Danish fortress is a very good place to be

in the middle of the old Danish fortress piece of the fortress, the tower, the wall.

There used to be of course on this site a four -walled, four -towered castle and interestingly it depends on what angle you're looking at this building from.

From here you can see just a palace with a random bit of castle on the corner.

From certain other angles you can't even see the palace at all.

It's just a big castle.

It depends where you're looking at it from and actually

because of this we're going to go into the garden here on this side in just a minute

and have a look around the corner.

There's another very good view of a piece of the So kind of both Castle Palace 5050.

It was a big old ruined crumbling castle when the Russians showed up Because it had already been here for centuries

Rewind back to when the Danish built it

and even they weren't the first people they built it on the site of the old Estonian

Just to set the scene for you the Danish arrived and hopes they didn't have to fight a battle they negotiated

They know it sounds funny to everyone else because it sounds a bit hippie, but for them it's only 50 % hippie.

The other half is actually quite serious, they love it, they feel something deeper, they know there's something there, and that's why it's a misnomer, don't go away thinking this is the third most atheist country in the world.

because actually even today, Olaf's church in Tallinn is still in the top 20 tallest churches in the world.

So to be in the top 20 is an achievement and that's the adjusted height.

1625 they made it shorter because it was hit by lightning at that point at least 10 times on record.

So they had to make it shorter, but originally if it was still at all height, it probably would still be maybe even in the top five tallest churches in the world today which is still quite impressive,

Maybe it was the tallest building any of them had ever seen in the known world at the time.

You can go to the top, it is a good view, it's just a very windy view, you have to climb too -

The cabin preserve is a little niche museum.

Very niche because when you go up there you don't really learn about what life was like under the Soviet Union.
