1
So what are the most important types of connections to create
2
in your life in order to have good social health and to live a meaningful life?
3
So first of all, we want to make sure that we have those close relationships with our friends, with our family members, right?
4
The people in our inner circle who we can truly be authentic versions of ourselves with, who we can spend time with and enjoy it.
5
We also want to have a sense of belonging to a community, to a group, something that's bigger than us.
6
That could come from your workplace and the team that you interact with on a day-to-day basis.
7
It could come from your local community in your neighborhood and the neighbors that you're connecting with there.
8
It could come from, you know, a hobby that you participate in, like a tennis team or whatever it is that you like to do, some aspect of your identity.
9
That matters also.
10
It's also important to connect with what psychologists refer to as weak ties.
11
So these are people on a day-to-day day basis who maybe you don't know well, but you're still interacting in lighthearted ways.
12
So the bus driver, the barista at your coffee shop, things like that, those friendly interactions actually matter a lot more than we think.
13
So taking all that together, the way that I recommend for people to really prioritize connection in their life is to write a to love list.
14
To love list?
15
A to love list.
16
What is a to love list?
17
So a to-do list is all the things you have to do.
18
We want to throw those out.
19
Instead, Instead, think about a to-love list.
20
Who are the, say, three to five top people in your life who are most important to you,
21
who you want to make sure that you are in regular contact with because you actually care about them?
22
You can write down your to-love list on a sticky note, put it next to your coffee machine, put it next to your toothbrush so that you see it when you're brushing your teeth.
23
This is just a really simple way to keep those people top of mind.
24
It is so easy to go about our days lost in our to-do lists, thinking about all the things we have to get done, busy with work, busy with this and that,
25
and to forget and to let fall to the wayside the people who actually matter most to you.
26
So this is a simple cue to remind you to say, oh, I haven't talked to that person recently.
27
I'm going to reach out.
