1
Good morning everyone!
2
Today I'm so thrilled because finally I can sit down
3
and have the chance to share with you one of my top secrets, how I've gotten my American accent.
4
Having a natural accent can help me to move forward with my English speaking so far.
5
What's interesting about my English speaking journey is that I've never been to any international school,
6
I've never studied abroad i never had the chance to take
7
any english fancy courses outside of my school for the last 30 years what i've learned
8
so far ages from my public school since my third grade
9
and i wasn't born as in talon in language i grew up with a very thick vietnamese english speaking accent
10
when i started learning it
11
and i also wasn't one of the kids growing up watching hbo
12
or disney channel or constantly watching youtubers vloggers or influencers speaking english just
13
because they weren't as popular in my time
14
so one of the biggest question is how did i developed my english accent the turning point was
15
when i started the second year in at my university my major was business english
16
and it was the first time i was introduced to the ipa
17
which is short for international phonetic alphabet
18
and besides the IPA we're also introduced with the linking sounds the intonation the word stress sentence stress
19
and reductions and I believe
20
that the intonation has made a huge difference to my accent from my experience besides IPA
21
and other pronunciation techniques I also did a few things to
22
improve my accent first of all i did listen to a
23
lot of american songs i listened to those songs over
24
and over again i wasn't consciously starting the language all the time
25
but you learn it from back of your mind you learn
26
it unconsciously getting used to the melody the rhythm the intonation
27
and so on there are so many things you can learn from the songs it was
28
so easy because you're relaxing and learning at the same time
29
and i think it's a great way to improve your english
30
pronunciation i also remembered i used to talk to myself in
31
front of the mirror the mirror was one of my best friend
32
when it comes to practice speaking english
33
and training my american accent i i would pretend like i was having a conversation
34
or a presentation i just look into the mirror and imagine
35
that the person i i was looking at now just a
36
imaginary friend those moments actually helped me to realize something very
37
important speaking english isn't just about knowing the cells you actually have to train your mouth to speak english better because
38
if you spend your entire life speaking vietnamese your mouth movement
39
actually more familiar with the vietnamese way your lips your tongue
40
your jaws actually they have their own habits i realized
41
that i needed to loosen up my mouth train the muscle to move differently because
42
when you speak english your mouth would look totally different from
43
how you speak vietnamese i think having the physical practice combined
44
with the ipa the intonation the reductions i mean other pronunciation
45
techniques has actually helped me to move much forwards with my english pronunciation especially
46
when it comes to my american accent
47
so what having american accent has helped me
48
so far the first thing i noticed was my confidence
49
if somebody said to you like as long as you speak
50
fluent english having an accent doesn't really matter let me tell
51
you from my own experience having the accent boosted my confidence to another level
52
when i say another level I don't mean going from one to two or three.
53
I mean here is is going to shoot your confidence straight up to nine or sometimes even 10.
54
I recall one of my husband's patients coming from the US once told me
55
that my accent sounded even more American than my husband himself, even though he was a US citizen,
56
he was born and raised and studied, living there his whole life.
57
I was like, okay, so all those years working on my pronunciation has actually paid off.
58
I was super proud of myself.
59
However, confident wasn't just the only thing that having a natural accent hasn't given me.
60
Developing an American accent has helped me to speak faster.
61
When you're familiar with linking sounds, intonation and other techniques, it helps you to move smoothly between sounds and sounds where you can stress,
62
but you can reduce yourself.
63
So it sounds more, It sounds like you don't have to spend a lot of energy speaking a word.
64
And that's why there are other benefits I recognize is that I can listen better even when people speak very fast.
65
I believe that there are a lot of times you just don't have the opportunity to ask your speaker to slow down.
66
You just need to keep up with them.
67
Knowing the accent or actually can speak the accent helps you a lot in the way you can listen, which much better than before.
68
So those are the benefits I'm sharing with you today.
