In the United States we have lots of different kinds of parks.

We have national parks.

They are run by the U.S federal government.

The next level down is the state park and that's run by each of the 50 states.

Here in California we have many state parks.

This is not one of them.

The next tier down from the state park would be a county park and then indeed there are also city parks.

We're on the Pacific Coast.

I'm up on the top of a cliff.

I'm up on a bluff and I can look down and see the Pacific Ocean below me.

So here is the Pacific Coast.

There's no obvious way to get down to the beach.

However, I did my homework.

This county park in Santa Cruz County is called greyhound rock.

Why would we call something greyhound rock?

Perhaps there's a grey rock down there.

It's a descriptive term.

It was a name applied to a monolith,

a big piece of stone in the ocean.

And when you see its shape, you'll understand the name.

So I'm going to walk from here down toward the beach and hopefully get you up close and personal with Greyhound Rock.

That's because it's very windy here.

and it doesn't fit tightly enough that I would be secure that I would not lose it.

Here's our first glimpse here on the trail of Greyhound Rock.

Greyhound Rock, you could construe,

It's longer than it is wide.

So someone decided that that should be called Greyhound Rock.

Compared to my most recent hike in this area, this trail is amazing.

It is paved with asphalt.

But in general, this is a very satisfactory hiking trail.

The level of the ocean rises and falls,

and there are charts, there are ways of looking up whether it will be low tide or high tide.

because the waves are coming up nearly to the level that the vegetation is deposited it.

As you look here, you can see the waves are breaking on the beach

and the vegetation that was deposited at the recent high tide is only slightly further up on the beach.

That's important here because of a feature in this park.

You can see that the hillside has eroded and the trail is falling apart.

It would be easy to understand that if the tide were to go out and the water level were to drop,

that it would be easy to walk out to Greyhound Rock.

I grew up on the East Coast and spent a lot of time in Florida.

The beaches in Florida could be the Atlantic Coast,

the Gulf Coast, or the Florida Keys.

The Atlantic Coast of the United States and Florida tends to have bigger waves like this,

and the water may be a little cooler.

Conditions obviously vary based on the weather,

but we think in terms of the bigger waves on the East Coast being from the Atlantic Ocean.

In contrast, if you go to the Gulf of Mexico,

the waves are much smaller most of the time,

to the Florida Keys, the water tends to be very warm and the waves not very large.
