1
Good afternoon, Mr. Buffett, Mr. Munger.
2
Could you please advise us on what major mistakes we should learn,
3
we should avoid in both investing and in life?
4
I would also like to have Mr. Munger's thoughts too, please.
5
Thank you very much.
6
Charlie said the major mistake you can make,
7
then, you know, you're lucky being in the United States.
8
Go around the world, you don't have a lot of choices in some places,
9
but you should write your obituary and then try and figure out how to to live up to it.
10
And that's something you get wiser on as you go along.
11
The business mistakes,
12
you just want to make sure you don't make any mistakes to take you out of the game
13
or come close to taking you out of your game.
14
You should never have a night when you're worried about investing.
15
I mean, assuming you have any money to invest at all,
16
you should spend a little bit less than you earn.
17
And you can spend a little bit more than you earn
18
and then then you've got debt and the chances are you'll never get out of debt.
19
We'll make an exception in terms of of a mortgage on your house.
20
But but credit card debt and we're in the credit card business big time
21
and we'll stay in the credit card business
22
but why get behind the game and if you're effectively paying 12 or 14
23
or whatever percent you're paying on a credit card you know
24
you're saying i'm going to earn more than 14 percent of money
25
and if you can do that come to berkshire hathaway
26
so it uh it's it's i hate to say this
27
when charlie's around me but it's straight out of ben franklin i mean
28
and uh it's not that complicated well i'll give you a couple lessons
29
so you know tom murphy the first time i met him
30
said two things to me he said you know always tell someone to go to hell tomorrow well
31
that was great advice then and think of what great advice it is
32
when you sit down at the computer
33
and screw your life up forever by telling somebody to go to hell
34
or something else in 30 seconds and you can't erase He said,
35
you know, you haven't lost the option.
36
And he said, you know,
37
praise by name, criticize by category.
38
Well, what makes more sense than that?
39
I mean, who do you like that criticizes you all the time?
40
And you don't need to vilify anybody to make your point on subject of discussion.
41
And then I'll give you another general piece of advice.
42
I've never known anybody that was basically kind that died without friends.
43
And I've known plenty of people with money that have died without friends, including their family.
44
But I've never known anybody.
45
And, you know, I've seen a few people,
46
including Tom Murphy, Sr., and maybe Junior,
47
who's here, but certainly his dad.
48
Hey, I never saw him.
49
I watched him for 50 years.
50
I never saw him do an unkind act.
51
I didn't see him do very many stupid acts either.
52
I mean, it wasn't that he was non-discriminating.
53
He just decided that there was no reason to do it.
54
And wow, what a difference that makes in life.
55
Charlie?
56
Well, it's so simple.
57
to spend less than you earn and invest shrewdly
58
and avoid toxic people and toxic activities and try
59
and keep learning all your life etc etc
60
and do a lot of deferred gratification because you prefer life
61
that way and if you do all those things you are almost certain to succeed And if you don't,
62
you're going to need a lot of luck.
63
A lot of luck.
64
And you don't want to need a lot of luck.
65
You want to go into a game where you're very likely to win without having any unusual luck.
66
I'd add one more thought to it.
67
You need to know how people can manipulate other people,
68
and you need to resist the temptation to do it yourself.
69
Oh, yes the the toxic people who are trying to fool you
70
or lie to you who aren't reliable meeting their commitments a
71
great lesson of life is get the hell out of your life yep and do it fast do it fast
72
And I would add, Charlie would totally agree with me,
73
do it tactfully if possible too,
74
but do get them out of your life.
75
Yes, I don't mind a little tact,
76
or even a little financial cost,
77
but the question is getting them a hell out of the lot.
78
you
