1
Have you ever struggled with achieving the right amount of wearing ease in your sewing projects?
2
Well in this video I want to share with you a simple visual method
3
that I call the cylinder approach in order for you to visualize wearing ease in another way.
4
So what is wearing ease?
5
Wearing ease is the amount that's in the garment above the body measurements.
6
This is the distance between the garment
7
and the body it's the relation between the two so
8
that difference between the garment measurements
9
and the body measurements is wearing ease it allows the body to comfortably move
10
now i want to share with you this cylinder approach
11
that i think is a great tool to visualize wearing ease
12
so i want you to think of an oval cylinder and think of that cylinder in terms of four parts,
13
so we're taking it in quarters, basically.
14
Now I want you to think of a person's body in terms of a cylinder.
15
So in this visual, we have a person's body, and then in the center, we have that cylinder.
16
On the side, we have a profile view,
17
so we're kind of thinking about the entire person's body in terms of an oval cylinder.
18
Now I want you to imagine the pattern piece of the person's body on the cylinder.
19
We're just going to do one quarter of the body.
20
So in this image I show the front body pattern piece on the first quarter of that cylinder.
21
So we kind of think of the body in terms of a quarter and that cylinder in terms of a quarter.
22
So if I were to place the other pattern pieces on this cylinder,
23
we would also have the other side of the front and then the back pieces in the back.
24
Now I want to add some numbers to this cylinder.
25
These numbers represent the amount in the entire circumference of that cylinder that is bigger than the body measurements.
26
So this would be the amount of wearing ease in the garment, just as a very rough explanation.
27
So if we think of that entire circumference of that cylinder, we would have an inch and a half or four centimeters.
28
If we split that up by quarters, it would be three eighths of an inch
29
or one centimeter in each quarter of the body or each quarter of the cylinder.
30
So we can kind of get this estimation that on each quarter pattern piece, let's say each side seam,
31
we would be adding about three -eighths of an inch
32
or one centimeter because that pattern piece goes all the way to the edge of
33
that cylinder if we were to really kind of fold that cylinder in half.
34
But you can see that the across front position in this area
35
or the across back position in the back doesn't go all the way to the edge of that cylinder.
36
So we don't necessarily need that whole three -eighths of an inch on
37
that quarter or one centimeter because it's not wrapping all the way to the edge.
38
Additionally, we usually need to have more wearing ease in areas where the body moves more.
39
So in this case, it would be the bust waist and hips
40
because the body is moving a lot in these positions versus those shoulders up top they're not moving
41
so much in that area.
42
The across back and across front's moving but the shoulders not so much.
43
Now I also like to think of grating in terms of a cylinder.
44
In the same cylinder approach grading is the amount
45
that we add to a size of a garment to create another size or we take away to create a smaller size.
46
So we're adding or we're subtracting to create a different size.
47
That's what grading is
48
and I like to think about grading in this same concept of the cylinder and imagine each size as another tube.
49
So if we think of all of those cylinders lined up
50
and inside of each other they all have to kind of grade up and just like that body gets bigger.
51
So it's a great way of thinking of the grading in that cylinder approach too.
52
And when we're grading we usually grade in areas not where the body moves more, but where the body grows more.
53
And usually that's at the edge of that cylinder.
54
The same kind of concept as the wearing ease method.
55
So you can use the cylinder approach in different ways of thinking about
56
wearing ease and then the growth of the body as far as grading goes
57
so i hope that you found this video helpful
58
if you like this cylinder approach
59
and it's helped you get a visual for this wearing ease concept
