Unit 4 Guide: The O Vowels

This unit covers two rounded back vowels that often blur together: /ɔː/ (long O, as in thought) and /ɒ/ (short O, as in lot — British English).

Mouth shape at a glance:

• /ɔː/ — Lips firmly rounded and pushed forward. Tongue body pulled back and slightly raised. Jaw is mid-open. The sound is long and held.
• /ɒ/ — Jaw drops further open. Lips only lightly rounded. Tongue sits low and back. The sound is short and clipped.

Key contrast:

• Length: /ɔː/ is sustained; /ɒ/ is brief.
• Rounding: strong on /ɔː/, soft on /ɒ/.
• Jaw: more closed for /ɔː/, more open for /ɒ/.

Common pitfalls:

• Merging both into a single mid-O sound.
• Forgetting to hold /ɔː/ long enough.
• Over-rounding /ɒ/ until it sounds identical to /ɔː/.

Examples: call, talk, door (/ɔː/) vs hot, stop, clock (/ɒ/).
