I'm a British English teacher, come spend the morning with me whilst we explore London and learn some B2C1 level expressions and grammar.

Right, it's half past five in the morning and I'm just about to get a line bike, so I think I plan to go to Tower Bridge.

So one thing that I've noticed my students saying is, I'm going to go by bike or I'm going to go by train, go by bus.

This sounds quite textbook so it's not really something that I ever say.

I would just say I'm gonna get a line bike to the centre or I'm gonna get the tube to Marleyburn.

I'm gonna get the bus to work for example.

Okay so I would just say get transport to a place.

I wouldn't really say I go to work by bus for example.

It just it doesn't sound very natural.

So I'm gonna put you away now and I'm gonna cycle.

Right I've just parked my bike um yeah I would have filmed

that but to be honest I'm such a nervous cyclist so I didn't want to to film that part.

I don't cycle very often but on the rare occasion

that I do I always park it in that exact same spot

because I'm such a nervous cyclist

that I just I don't know I get nervous to park it

and that actually makes me think of a really nice word

that I've talked to a lot of my advanced students and they didn't know so let's see if you know it.

So you could say for example cycling makes me nervous

but another adjective that you could say that means to cause you to be nervous is the adjective nerve -wracking.

Nerve -wracking.

So I might say for example I find cycling in London really nerve -wracking

or I don't know I find giving speeches really nerve -wracking I find exams really nerve -wracking it's something

that we use a lot but I don't often hear English learners using

that word so new word look where I've just arrived Tower Bridge

so of course you can say the words beautiful or pretty

but in the UK you're going to constantly hear the word

stunning stunning okay we use it all the time this view

is stunning your outfit is stunning your girlfriend looks stunning

so yeah usually the street is absolutely heaving with people coming in

and out of cafes and all the restaurants here

but right now it's just me um I don't know why

I've only just discovered this I'm gonna go down here

so yeah it's been absolutely roasting in London recently so I've just been finding filming

so I don't know tiring and I've been getting so hot

and sweaty while I've been filming so yeah it's

so nice to just come here early on in the day

I can't believe this is um I can't believe I'm technically

working it feels uh I don't know it feels like I'm a little tourist today.

This little road was called Shad Thames.

Oh that's something to teach you.

So you see that word there Thames.

So lots of people pronounce it Thames.

Okay the river Thames.

But no the pronunciation is Thames.

Thames.

The river Thames.

Little post box.

Right let's go up the little stairs in England we always walk up the left hand side of the stairs

so I always know that there are loads of tourists in this area

because everyone walks on the right

but to be fair I actually love seeing all the tourists in London

because it just reminds me

that I'm here in I don't know maybe my favorite city in the world

and people pay loads of money to come visit the city

that I live in and maybe take for granted

so yeah I love seeing all the tourists on this bridge

well during the day right now it's empty I want to get down there

I want to go down there but

and I genuinely walk down there all the time

and I can't remember how this is the thing with me my sense of direction is appalling

appalling okay that means really really bad appalling luckily

or maybe unluckily i'm not sure but luckily uh my best friends are

so good with directions so i tend to just follow them

but i actually think that's bad for me because then

when i do have to walk around alone it's like this

that actually makes me think of a nice mini lesson which is the pronunciation of I love this city.

So I know that there are two O's but it isn't London.

It is not London, okay?

Ignore the spelling.

So that first syllable actually rhymes with fun or sun, okay?

Lun, lun.

And then the second syllable has a schwa sound.

The schwa is a really weak sound.

It's our most common sound in English

and it's literally just uh uh okay dun dun London London

so not London ignore the o's London dun dun

and over there it's quite cloudy so maybe it's hard to see

but over there is the shard the shard I must admit

it's not my favorite monument I like I like the view from inside the shard that's amazing

but i don't know i think it looks i don't really like the way that it looks

but maybe that's just me i don't know another mini lesson

is you obviously learn i'm going to right i'm going to the shops i'm going to town etc

when you come to the uk though you're going to hear

i'm off to but you know we reduce to to just i'm off to i'm off to

so instead of always saying I'm going to town you're here I'm off to town I'm off to town

or I'm off to the shops okay I'm going to the shops I'm off to McDonald's

or we can use it for going abroad I'm off to Barcelona I'm off to France

so you can use it to to mean I'm going to

um for the present tense like right now I'm going

or you can also add a future time frame

and then yeah it's talking about the future of course

so I'm off to Barcelona tomorrow I'm off to town this

weekend I'm off to Paris in two weeks okay oh

and we can also use it in questions um where are

you off to where are you off to there we actually

keep a strong to where are you off to where are you off to I would film the shard

but you know my feelings towards it this word here despite

the spelling is pronounced key like a door key okay key
