Hi everyone and welcome back.
2
This is episode two of my English learning podcast and I am really happy you're here as you know.
3
Today I want to talk about something
4
that I think is one of the biggest differences between knowing English
5
and speaking English and it's something I even learned myself when I was learning Spanish.
6
So the problem is you can study English for years.
7
You can learn thousands of vocabulary words.
8
You can study all the grammar.
9
You can get really good grades on English tests.
10
And you can still have a conversation with someone and suddenly think, I don't know what to say.
11
Or worse, I don't know this word.
12
I can't remember it right now.
13
or I understand everything this person is saying, but I don't know how to answer.
14
If that sounds in any way familiar,
15
I want you to listen to this episode because I don't think the answer is simply learn more vocabulary.
16
I think the answer is learn how to talk about more things.
17
And I'm going to explain what I mean.
18
If you listened to my first podcast, you heard me talk about learning Spanish and eventually living in Spain.
19
I started learning Spanish when I was 15 years old.
20
I studied it in high school.
21
Then I studied it in college.
22
I did my homework.
23
I studied vocabulary.
24
I studied the grammar and I got really good grades.
25
I was actually pretty dang good at conjugating verbs.
26
I kind of loved it.
27
It was like math for me.
28
I loved it.
29
Give me a verb and tell me to conjugate it.
30
I was ready.
31
I could conjugate like all the verbs.
32
I knew my Spanish grammar and then I got to Spain and And suddenly,
33
I couldn't understand anything.
34
Like, seriously, I was, I mean, I was lost.
35
It was completely different.
36
I remember being in the subway station and looking around thinking, what is happening?
37
I couldn't understand what people were saying.
38
And I couldn't even read everything, which was really surprising to me.
39
I remember realizing that knowing Spanish in the classroom was not the same thing as actually using Spanish in Spain.
40
Here's one example that I still think about.
41
People would ask me a very normal question.
42
How long have you been here?
43
And I would just freeze.
44
I knew all kinds of Spanish grammar and I had studied it for years,
45
but that particular question, I just could not understand it for the life of me.
46
And that taught me something really important.
47
Real conversations are unpredictable.
48
You don't get to choose the vocabulary that someone else uses you don't get to choose the grammar they use.
49
You don't even get to choose the subject they're going to talk to you about.
50
So that's exactly why I want you to broaden the things you can talk about in English.
51
So imagine that you're learning English.
52
Just imagine.
53
Maybe you can talk about your family.
54
You can say, I have two children.
55
My daughter is 20 years old.
56
My son lives in Brazil.
57
And maybe you can talk about your job.
58
I work in a hospital.
59
Or I work from home.
60
I've been working there for five years.
61
Fantastic.
62
Maybe you can talk about your favorite food but what happens
63
when someone asks you about something else what happens
64
when someone says what did you do last weekend or where did you go on vacation or
65
what kind of sports do you like what do you think about this what's your favorite thing to cook?
66
What kind of car do you drive?
67
What are you going to do next summer?
68
Like, oh my gosh, suddenly you need new, completely different vocabulary.
69
And that's not a bad thing.
70
That's actually the point.
71
Because every time you talk about a new subject,
72
you're going to discover words you don't know and then you learn them that's how your english grows
73
i want to make something pretty clear you don't have to
74
be an expert on a subject to talk about it you
75
don't have to know everything about cars to talk about cars you don't have to be an expert on soccer,
76
football, we call it soccer.
77
To talk about soccer, you don't have to know everything about cooking to talk about food.
78
And you don't have to know everything about gardening to talk about your garden.
79
You just need to be able to communicate.
80
Sometimes the best way to communicate is when you ask questions.
81
This is one of the most important English skills you can learn.
82
Ask questions.
83
Let's say someone is talking to you about something you don't know.
84
You can say, I've never heard of that.
85
Or I don't know what that means.
86
What is that?
87
How does that work?
88
why do you like it how did how did you get interested in that okay
89
so now you're having a conversation you don't need to know
90
everything you need to know how to keep the conversation going
91
and this is actually one of my biggest beliefs about learning a language if you want to become a better English speaker,
92
you have to get to know someone.
93
Think about your closest friends.
94
You probably talk about everything.
95
You talk about your family.
96
You talk about your job, about food, about problems, your vacations.
97
You talk about current events.
98
You talk about your favorite actors and actresses.
99
You talk about things that happened yesterday and that will happen tomorrow.
100
You talk about things you like that you don't like.
101
You tell the same stories over and over.
102
And that's actually really good for language learning because you're using the same language repeatedly over and over.
103
You hear yourself saying similar things.
104
You hear the other person saying similar things and eventually those sentences become automatic.
105
That's how I improved my Spanish.
106
I had American friends who were also learning Spanish and we spoke Spanish together all the time.
107
I found some friends that I really liked
108
and I spent a lot of time with them and I spoke a lot of Spanish.
109
I moved in with Spanish roommates.
110
That was hard but I learned so much.
111
I did my homework.
112
I studied.
113
But I also talked.
114
And I tried to talk a lot.
115
And I think that made a huge difference.
116
This is also why I teach the way I do on my live classes.
117
I don't want you to memorize, you know, some random vocabulary words or phrases.
118
I want you to learn how to use the word in an entire sentence like this.
119
I exercise every day.
120
That's it.
121
Your verb is exercise.
122
So let's work with it.
123
I exercise every day.
124
I exercised yesterday.
125
I will exercise tomorrow.
126
I didn't exercise today.
127
Now, the question, did you exercise yesterday?
128
Do you exercise every day?
129
Um, we do this every day in my life.
130
You're not learning one sentence.
131
You're learning how the sentence works.
132
You're learning how to move that idea through various situations,
133
different timelines, yesterday, tomorrow, today.
134
That is so much more useful to me than memorizing a list of vocabulary words because when you're actually speaking,
135
you need to be able to do something with the language
136
and you need to be able to recognize what the person is saying that you are speaking to.
137
So here's another thing I want you to do.
138
Talk about your real life.
139
Don't only study sentences because they're in a textbook.
140
If you cook every day, learn how to talk about cooking.
141
If you play soccer, learn how to talk about soccer.
142
If you have kids, learn how to talk about your kids.
143
That should be easy.
144
If you work in an office, learn how to talk about your job.
145
If you love to garden, learn gardening vocabulary.
146
If you love to gossip about your neighbors, learn gossiping vocabulary and then share the tea.
147
If you love makeup like I do, learn makeup vocabulary.
148
If you love to do your hair like I do, learn how to do hair vocabulary.
149
Traveling, travel vocabulary, cars, movies, music, you get the idea.
150
Your interests are incredible language learning tools.
151
The more experience you have in life, the more experiences you can grab from here and there.
152
Your vocabulary will be huge.
153
You already have something to say.
154
You just need the English words to say it with.
155
And then learn some things you don't know about.
156
You don't have to become an expert.
157
We can't be perfect at everything, they tell me.
158
But if you never talk about something, you're never going to learn the vocabulary for it.
159
So let's think about soccer.
160
People all over the world love soccer.
161
Believe me, I found this out this summer.
162
I mean, I knew it was true, but when y 'all came to the United States, it was like, whoa.
163
I was in New York during the Brazil game.
164
I was down in the square with all the Brazilians.
165
It was so cool.
166
You might already know words like goal, player, team, coach, game, win, lose.
167
Should I slow down?
168
You tell me in the comments.
169
But then maybe you start watching more soccer in English and suddenly you're learning completely new words.
170
You're learning phrases.
171
You're hearing how people describe the game.
172
You're hearing how fans talk about it.
173
You're hearing how commentators talk about it.
174
I'm sorry, commentators.
175
Commentators talk about it.
176
You're learning English because you're interested in something.
177
And I mean, that is pretty cool if you ask me.
178
One of the most useful sentences you can learn in English is...
179
Are you ready?
180
I don't know.
181
And you think I'm kidding, but I'm not.
182
I don't know.
183
I don't know what that means.
184
I've never heard of that before.
185
I don't know much about that.
186
That is not bad English.
187
That is useful English.
188
If someone starts talking to you about something you don't understand, You don't have to pretend.
189
Just ask, what does that mean?
190
Can you explain that?
191
Why is that important?
192
How does that work?
193
Who is that?
194
Where is that?
195
You know, people love talking and teaching, I think, especially in America.
196
We love to help people.
197
So questions are your companions.
198
Questions are your friends.
199
Who, what, when, where, why, how.
200
Learning how to ask questions will help you to keep the conversation moving.
201
I also want to take a little pressure off of you.
202
There are things in English that you simply don't need to worry about yet.
203
I hear English learners worrying about complicated grammar all the time.
204
Sometimes, and this happens all the time,
205
sometimes students want to understand every possible tense before they feel comfortable speaking it.
206
You don't need to do that.
207
You don't need to understand every advanced grammar structure before you can have a conversation.
208
You do not need to know how to use.
209
I have been hearing a lot about,
210
you know, the musical words lately.
211
You do not need to know that.
212
You just need useful English.
213
You need English that you're going to use every day and you need to practice it.
214
Practice using it.
215
That's much more important.
216
And while we're talking about learning English, let's talk about something else.
217
Idioms.
218
You know, it's a piece of cake.
219
Break a leg.
220
Let's do it hand in hand.
221
I know these expressions are often taught in English classes.
222
Like, teachers love teaching that for some reason.
223
And yes, they're interesting and And they're part of the American culture, but that's kind of it.
224
They're just about the culture.
225
Don't prioritize them.
226
Don't even worry about them.
227
I don't want you spending your limited study time memorizing expressions that you may never actually use.
228
I want you to learn English that helps you communicate.
229
If an idiom comes up naturally, that is the beauty of an idiom because we don't use them often.
230
We use them in very particular situations.
231
When you are in the situation, you hear someone say, oh, that break a leg.
232
You'll understand in that moment what it means and
233
when to use it so that you can use it when you end up in that situation some other time.
234
So, but don't think.
235
I can't speak English because I don't know 500 American idioms.
236
You absolutely can.
237
So here's what I want you to do this week.
238
I want you to choose five subjects,
239
five completely different subjects, and I want you to learn how to talk about each one.
240
So I have some ideas you can use.
241
You can talk about your family.
242
Talk about one person in your family who is important to you.
243
Who are they?
244
Where do they live?
245
What do they do?
246
Why are they important to you?
247
Number two, your favorite food.
248
Don't just say, I like pizza.
249
Like every American ever.
250
Tell me about it.
251
When do you eat it?
252
Who makes it?
253
Where do you buy it?
254
Why do you like it?
255
Number three, a vacation you took.
256
Can we dream about vacations, please?
257
Tell me your vacation so I can live.
258
The word is vicariously.
259
That's a big word.
260
vicariously.
261
So I can live vicariously through you.
262
I can dream about going on your vacation. Where did you go?
263
Who did you go with?
264
What happened?
265
What did you like?
266
What didn't you like.
267
Number four, somewhere you want to go.
268
Where do you want to travel?
269
Why?
270
Who would you go with?
271
What would you do there?
272
Number five, a difficult situation.
273
This one might be harder, but guess what?
274
We all have difficult situations, so we can all come up with words for them.
275
Think about something difficult that happened to you, or I like to say that you lived through.
276
Maybe you had a problem at work.
277
You missed a flight.
278
You lost something.
279
You had a problem with a friend.
280
Learn how to explain what happened.
281
And here is the important part.
282
don't just write the sentences say them out loud talk to
283
yourself talk to a friend talk in whatsapp in the community
284
and in the whatsapp community listen to other people come back try again that's how you build your english
285
and if you're scared or embarrassed
286
um just think just think it's okay to not know enough about vocabulary it's okay to not understand everything that is said
287
i understand i was that person learning spanish i was
288
so shy i hated attention i didn't want people looking at me
289
and and speaking another language made me feel very very very uncomfortable oh it was
290
so hard i still feel that feeling you have to break through
291
that wall and you have to talk
292
while you're scared you can say can you give you can
293
say simple give me a minute let me think I don't know that word.
294
How do you say that?
295
And then just keep going.
296
If you go to the grocery store and you need to ask somebody something, why is that so hard?
297
Just ask.
298
And if you see someone you know, say hi.
299
And if you need to talk to your kid's teacher, just do it.
300
They want to talk to you.
301
You know, keep that in mind too.
302
They want to talk to you.
303
If you're meeting your boyfriend's mom and you're terrified, just talk to her.
304
It's okay.
305
If you're talking to your professor, just talk.
306
You don't have to sound perfect.
307
You just have to communicate.
308
Get the words out so uh one last thing
309
and remember um what i learned in spain i had studied
310
spanish for years i got great grades i could conjugate the
311
verbs i could do the homework real life gave me sentences i had never practiced
312
and that's what i want you to prepare for don't only learn english for your English class.
313
Learn English for your life.
314
Learn how to talk about your family, your food, your job, your hobbies,
315
your vacations, your problems, dreams,
316
interests, all the things that you know and so many things that you don't know.
317
Talk about everything because the more things you can talk about, the more English you will naturally learn,
318
and you don't have to learn it all at once.
319
I mean, how can you?
320
Impossible.
321
Just choose one new subject, learn some words, build some sentences,
322
ask the questions, and talk.
323
That's your job so this week choose your five subjects practice talking about them
324
practice writing about them and
325
if you want to practice with thousands of other English learners come find me on WhatsApp link in bio
326
