The ancient Greeks also celebrated birthdays, but for their gods and goddesses.

They made round cakes with candles to honour Artemis, the goddess of the moon.

Some people say this is where our tradition of birthday cakes with candles comes from.

The idea of celebrating everyone's birthday started later.

The Romans were one of the first to celebrate the birthdays of ordinary people.

Wealthy Roman families held big feasts for their birthdays.

But back then, only men had birthday celebrations.

Women had to wait many years before they could celebrate their birthdays too.

The tradition of birthday cakes became popular in Germany in the 18th century.

German children celebrated something called Kinderfest.

They had cakes with candles, and each candle represented a year of their life.

People believed that the smoke from the candles carried their wishes up to the sky.

This is why we still blow out candles and make wishes today.

But why do we count birthdays at all?

Long ago people used the moon and stars to track time.

The first calendars helped people know when the seasons changed.

This was very important for farming.

Later, people started using calendars to track their own age and that's how birthday counting began.
