1
Hello and welcome to the English Listening Podcast.
2
Today we will talk about something fun and special – birthdays.
3
Everyone loves birthdays.
4
We have parties, eat cake, get presents and spend time with friends and family.
5
But have you ever wondered why we celebrate birthdays?
6
Where did this tradition come from?
7
Let's find out.
8
A long time ago, people did not celebrate birthdays the way we do today.
9
In ancient times, only important people, like kings and queens, had birthday celebrations.
10
In ancient Egypt, people believed that when a pharaoh had a birthday, he became a god.
11
The ancient Greeks also celebrated birthdays, but for their gods and goddesses.
12
They made round cakes with candles to honour Artemis, the goddess of the moon.
13
Some people say this is where our tradition of birthday cakes with candles comes from.
14
The idea of celebrating everyone's birthday started later.
15
The Romans were one of the first to celebrate the birthdays of ordinary people.
16
Wealthy Roman families held big feasts for their birthdays.
17
But back then, only men had birthday celebrations.
18
Women had to wait many years before they could celebrate their birthdays too.
19
The tradition of birthday cakes became popular in Germany in the 18th century.
20
German children celebrated something called Kinderfest.
21
They had cakes with candles, and each candle represented a year of their life.
22
People believed that the smoke from the candles carried their wishes up to the sky.
23
This is why we still blow out candles and make wishes today.
24
But why do we count birthdays at all?
25
Long ago people used the moon and stars to track time.
26
The first calendars helped people know when the seasons changed.
27
This was very important for farming.
28
Later, people started using calendars to track their own age and that's how birthday counting began.
29
Science also plays a role in birthdays.
30
Many studies show that celebrating birthdays can make people happier.
31
When we celebrate with friends and family, we feel loved and appreciated.
32
This helps us stay positive and healthy.
33
Scientists also say that traditions like birthday celebrations help us remember special moments in life.
34
So why do we celebrate birthdays?
35
Birthdays help us mark time, bring us closer to loved ones and give us a reason to have fun.
36
Whether you have a big party or a small gathering, birthdays are a great way to celebrate life.
37
And remember, every birthday is a new chapter in your story.
