All in all, I actually had a pretty good time, because a lot of people are not built for this lifestyle.

Consulting is not just making PowerPoint decks and flying around and presenting solutions to clients, it's a lot of communication,

it's a lot of problem solving, and many times it's a lot of implementation.

You know, not everyone actually gets put on a strategy project.

You might be on an SAP implementation project.

You might be on a change management project.

There is a lot of diversity in the different engagements and projects and teams you might work on.

So whenever somebody says something like definitive about consulting, take it with a grain of salt.

The firms are different, the engagements within the firms are different, and the teams within the engagements are different.

At its core, consulting is really solving big problems, talking to important people at companies,

telling them your solution, trying to find data in and out of meetings every day, and trying to scramble to get solutions finished.

Smart people who are not always the friendliest people and who may or may not actually want you there.

So you have to be competitive, you have to be a great communicator, you have to be able to deal with confrontation, you have to be charismatic and get people to like you.

You also have to be a good listener, a good researcher, and know when to shut up,

when to fake it, and when to be confident versus when to just hold your tongue.

You're basically getting paid to think critically under pressure with tight deadlines without all the information.

So you have to infer certain things.

You have to try to pull information from where you can, research where you can, and make the best possible inference from that information that you gathered during the engagement.

You are never going to know everything.

You will have imposter syndrome.

And no, you cannot let that bleed into the presentation for the solution.

You have to fake it till you make it and present confident, clearly, and effectively.

Now, if you enjoy ambiguity, you like kind of putting the puzzle pieces together and pulling data

and research from different areas and trying to find a unique type of solution, this is probably a good job for you.

If you are someone who likes to have a set rule, go follow the rules, get the solution, rinse, repeat, consulting is probably not the best fit for you.

You're going to be working with a lot of different types of people in different industries on different types of engagements.

Pretty much means that every single week is going to look different for you as far as work goes.

It's very different from most corporate jobs where you do the same task over and over, communicating with the same people over and over.

That is not consulting.

It's actually quite the opposite of consulting.

In consulting, you're doing a wide variety of different tasks with a wide variety of different people over and over.

And also you have to be able to handle the pressure.

This is not a light job where people are going to be friendly

and nice all the time and give you flexible deadlines.

You're going to be dealing with C-suite executive people within these companies

and they're paying hundreds of thousands of dollars for this consulting fee.

They want you to be good at what you do and they want you to be clear in your communication.

They don't want you to bullshit them.

They don't want you to waste their time.

If pressure motivates you, then this is probably a good career for you.

If it stresses you out and eats at your mental health, maybe it's better to go into something a little bit more traditional and repetitive.

And you also have to be willing to work a lot.

You may not be working late hours every single engagement, but you have to be on the clock.

You have to be willing to jump into a meeting

or be willing to drop everything at 10 30 at night and go research and grab data from the client,

you're pretty much on call until midnight every working day as a consultant.

You have to be able to drop what you're doing and hop into calls or meetings late way after, you know, the nine to five.

So if you like that stressful, you know, work hard, play hard environment, consulting is probably a good career for you.

If you're someone who likes to really have a good work-life balance where you don't even think about work after 5 p.m., consulting is not for you.

However, a lot of firms do put a strong emphasis on taking weekends, which is better than investment banking which will just eat away your whole life.

Another thing I touch on is that you're coachable.

There are different managers and different bosses you'll have within your time of consulting

and you have to be able to kind of be adaptable to what they're looking for.

Some managers really appreciate you being concise and communicating clearly.

Some managers really want you to kind of be their friend

and build a relationship before you get really into the weeds of working.

It just depends.

Get to know your manager and be willing to understand there's different leadership styles

and there's different things that will move the ball down the field for you and your career.

The most important one is making sure your manager is happy

and being a people pleaser and figuring out what makes them satisfied as far as the working world goes.

You know, if they're being mean about it, just kind of laugh it off, shrug it off and get back to work.

Show that you're willing to take the feedback and that you're coachable.

Now, if you want predictable, low stress work, consulting is not for you.

If you hate airports and you hate flying, consulting is not for you.

And if you need constant direction and micromanagement, consulting is not for you.

Not every career is for everybody.

There's a lot of careers that are great for that exact same person.

If you want to stay in the same city, do something repetitive and have a good work-life balance, there is a plethora of different corporate careers that you can do that with.
