But first, let's begin with a story making news lately.
2
You might have heard your parents talking about how the costs of some of your favorite foods and snacks have increased.
3
Well, those rising prices are having an impact on millions of kids
4
and families across the country who can't afford enough to eat and are going hungry.
5
It's called food insecurity.
6
Our friend Kristen Dahlgren is here to explain what's going on.
7
Do you remember a time when you felt hungry?
8
Whenever I'm home, I just am really hungry then, and I guess I get a little hangry.
9
Yeah, it can make you angry or make you feel weak.
10
It can be hard to concentrate.
11
And while you might just reach for a snack, that's not the case for some kids.
12
With food prices skyrocketing, a lot of families in America can't afford enough food.
13
They don't know where their next meal is coming from.
14
Many kids go to bed hungry every night.
15
While the issue is huge, it can often be invisible.
16
People don't realize that hunger is in every single community.
17
Surveys show nearly one out of every six kids experienced what's called food insecurity.
18
That means they don't know when they'll get their next meal.
19
Julie Sacamondi says the pandemic and inflation have made things even harder for her and her son, Gio.
20
Food is expensive, and the worst part is healthy food is even more expensive.
21
So the food that my kids was getting is not sufficient for a kid who plays sports
22
or even for a kid who just needs fuel.
23
When you don't have access to fresh fruits and vegetables, and when you do have access, your parents can't afford them.
24
It's too expensive.
25
A lot of times our children don't eat foods that we really like to see them eat.
26
So there are places around the country set up to help families get food so kids can grow, learn and play.
27
We want the kids to know that they're like everybody else.
28
You know you won't be picked on because your parents aren't able to afford to provide meals for you.
29
At the East Texas Food Bank volunteers pack bags for kids backpacks filled with healthy nutritious food items.
30
The bags are distributed at schools on Fridays so kids have food on the the weekends.
31
We get lasagna, beans, ravioli, cereal, fruit cups, pretty much like it all.
32
Sarah is a fifth grader who knows what it's like to go without food.
33
Sometimes we didn't have enough money, so when we got the backpack food, it really improved.
34
Dylan, besides dinner.
35
When Dylan Pfeiffer heard other kids were going hungry, he decided to take action organizing his own food drive donations poured in
36
so i've collected about 12 000 pounds already so i'm gonna try
37
and aim for 220 000 um by the end of next year what does
38
that do to your heart
39
when you hear it from people who might be helped by what you're collecting it felt really good
40
that I was helping people.
41
Maybe I didn't even know.
42
Dylan's not alone in this food fight.
43
We found kids across the country from Florida to Texas to California who are also volunteering to help the hungry.
44
Do you want to make a difference?
45
There are a number of ways to help.
46
You can volunteer to pack boxes at the local food bank, encourage family and friends to give donations instead of gifts for your birthday,
47
or get together with friends and organize your own food drive at school.
48
Anyone can lend a hand to make sure everyone has enough to eat.
49

「Child Food Insecurity Report on NBC Nightly News: Kids Edition」
