Whenever I'm home, I just am really hungry then, and I guess I get a little hangry.

Yeah, it can make you angry or make you feel weak.

It can be hard to concentrate.

And while you might just reach for a snack, that's not the case for some kids.

With food prices skyrocketing, a lot of families in America can't afford enough food.

They don't know where their next meal is coming from.

Many kids go to bed hungry every night.

While the issue is huge, it can often be invisible.

People don't realize that hunger is in every single community.

Surveys show nearly one out of every six kids experienced what's called food insecurity.

That means they don't know when they'll get their next meal.

Julie Sacamondi says the pandemic and inflation have made things even harder for her and her son, Gio.

Food is expensive, and the worst part is healthy food is even more expensive.

So the food that my kids was getting is not sufficient for a kid who plays sports

or even for a kid who just needs fuel.

When you don't have access to fresh fruits and vegetables, and when you do have access, your parents can't afford them.

It's too expensive.

A lot of times our children don't eat foods that we really like to see them eat.

So there are places around the country set up to help families get food so kids can grow, learn and play.

We want the kids to know that they're like everybody else.

You know you won't be picked on because your parents aren't able to afford to provide meals for you.

At the East Texas Food Bank volunteers pack bags for kids backpacks filled with healthy nutritious food items.

The bags are distributed at schools on Fridays so kids have food on the the weekends.

We get lasagna, beans, ravioli, cereal, fruit cups, pretty much like it all.

Sarah is a fifth grader who knows what it's like to go without food.

Sometimes we didn't have enough money, so when we got the backpack food, it really improved.
