1
Well hello all of my students.
2
I hope you're having a fantastic day.
3
My name is Jay.
4
Today's lesson is to strengthen your listening and comprehension ability.
5
This will not be like one of my normal English lessons
6
so if you're watching on YouTube you can follow along on the screen to practice and improve your English reading skills.
7
I do have a playlist with the same types of lessons on the channel so you can also study and enjoy.
8
The link is below.
9
Now remember, listen to understand as I read and speak at a pace you can follow.
10
If you comprehend today's story,
11
which I put together myself,
12
you should be able to answer the three questions at the end.
13
Let's dive into today's story.
14
Street food is food that is prepared and sold in public places like sidewalks,
15
parks, markets, or busy streets.
16
A sidewalk is the path next to a road where people walk
17
and sometimes people use the sidewalk to ride their bike as well.
18
Street food is popular because it is usually fast,
19
affordable, and full of flavor.
20
I often call street food authentic.
21
Some of the best Mexican food I've had was on the streets of Tijuana and in the city of Oakland.
22
Ooh, it was so good.
23
I enjoy certain types of street food.
24
Many people enjoy buying street food during lunch breaks,
25
festivals, or while walking around a city.
26
Here in the United States,
27
we have fairs and at a fair people have street food for sale.
28
And a fair is where you go and spend time with family and friends.
29
They have rides, they have games,
30
and it's usually in the summer months or in the fall when the weather begins to cool off.
31
Different countries have different types of street food.
32
In Mexico, people often enjoy tacos and grilled corn.
33
And I must say, I have started eating roasted or grilled corn from a restaurant called Longhorn.
34
Oh, they put seasoning salt and cheese on it.
35
I believe it's Parmesan cheese.
36
It's so good.
37
And so I enjoy Mexican street food.
38
In Japan, you might see vendors selling noodles or seafood snacks.
39
A vendor is a person who sells food or products to customers.
40
In the United States, popular street foods include hot dogs,
41
pretzels, barbecue, and fried chicken.
42
Street food is often connected to culture and community.
43
Community.
44
Families and friends gather around food stands to eat, talk, and relax.
45
And notice this picture I have here of some grilled or roasted corn.
46
Oh, that looks so good.
47
Put some butter on it, a little pepper.
48
That looks so good.
49
I'm getting hungry.
50
A food stand is a small place where food is prepared and sold quickly.
51
These places are often busy and full of energy.
52
Now, when I was younger,
53
street food vendors usually only took cash.
54
But now, due to technology,
55
Of course, people now take Apple Pay,
56
Cash App, Demo, just different ways to accept digital money.
57
The smells, sounds, and conversations create an exciting atmosphere.
58
Ooh, I don't know what that is, but it looks delicious.
59
In recent years, food trucks have become very popular.
60
A food truck is a large vehicle where people cook and sell food.
61
Sometimes they have in different cities what is called a food truck park.
62
And you can go to the park and there may be 10 or 20 trucks selling different types of food.
63
The first time I went to a food truck park was in Birmingham, Alabama.
64
and who knew that the food would be
65
so good there was this guy who was not hispanic he
66
was actually a black guy selling burrito tacos oh my goodness they were
67
so delicious you had one woman selling homemade lemonades
68
and they were various flavors you had people selling desserts oh i'm getting hungry talking about it right now.
69
Many food trucks move to different locations during the day and use social media to tell customers where they will be.
70
Social media includes apps and websites like Instagram,
71
Facebook, and TikTok where people share videos, photos, and updates online.
72
Today, more people are also selling food directly from their homes.
73
Because the cost of living has increased,
74
many adults are searching for ways to earn extra money.
75
The cost of living means the amount of money needed to pay for housing,
76
food, transportation, and daily expenses.
77
I actually saw some videos on TikTok of people selling food through Facebook Marketplace.
78
So they were such good cooks.
79
They did not have a food truck.
80
They could not afford to start a restaurant,
81
so they started making meals from their home,
82
advertising on Facebook, and people would come and pick it up.
83
Oh, the guy would show the pictures of the food.
84
One woman had oxtails, which my wife loves.
85
What was it?
86
Loaded baked potatoes, macaroni and cheese, greens.
87
oh, just one person had lobster and steak.
88
I can't watch those videos too long without getting hungry.
89
Some people cook meals, desserts,
90
or snacks at home and advertise them online using social media.
91
Customers then place orders and pick up the food and have it delivered or have it delivered.
92
This has created new business opportunities for families and individuals.
93
Here's a fun fact.
94
Some street food businesses become so successful that they eventually open restaurants.
95
A restaurant is a place where people sit down to order and eat meals.
96
And of course, all of my advanced English learners, you know that.
97
But bear with me.
98
We have so many different levels of learning here on the channel.
99
OK, what starts as one small food cart or food truck can grow into a large business over time?
100
I even like some of the fruit stands that people have fresh fruits.
101
And I've seen some people sell popcorn with different flavors,
102
lemon pepper popcorn, cotton candy flavored popcorn.
103
One of my favorites is Italian ice or some people just do ice cream.
104
So there are so many different creative people that have food trucks and they sell their creative dishes to the public.
105
Street food also teaches an important lesson about creativity and hard work.
106
Many street food sellers wake up very early,
107
prepare ingredients, cook for long hours and serve customers with a smile.
108
Notice this street food district.
109
I'm not sure what country this is in,
110
but you see the people out and about enjoying the food that has been prepared right on the streets.
111
Their success often comes from consistency, patience, and good service.
112
Learning English is similar.
113
Progress may start small, but small daily effort can grow into something much bigger.
114
Every time you practice listening,
115
reading or speaking, you are building your skills little by little.
116
And that's why I encourage you guys to practice every day.
117
And I have hundreds of free English lessons that not only educate you,
118
but also entertain you.
119
As we finish today's lesson,
120
remember that learning English is a journey.
121
Stay curious, stay patient and continue practicing one step at a time.
122
Now, before you go, I have a few questions I want you to think about and I want you to answer.
123
OK, number one, what did you learn from today's story?
124
Number two, what was the most interesting part of the story?
125
And number three, can you connect something from the story to your own life?
126
You know, for me, I like how I brought out that building a street food business is a process.
127
It takes time.
128
And that connected with me,
129
not just when it comes to teaching English,
130
but just dealing with life.
131
You know, we all make mistakes.
132
We all go through tough times,
133
but life is a journey.
134
And so we learn from our mistakes.
135
We learn from our mess ups.
136
And then we use that wisdom to improve our life on this journey.
137
So whatever you may be going through,
138
whether it's learning English or dealing with a difficult season in your life,
139
Remember, it's a journey.
140
Take your time, gather the wisdom,
141
learn from it, and then strive to make your life better.
142
And to me, that's more than just learning English.
143
That's just life in general.
144
Well, I'm hungry now.
145
I've talked about all of this street food and it has made me very, very hungry.
146
So with that being said,
147
I hope you have enjoyed today's comprehension practice lesson.
148
Also, I consider it an English listening and reading lesson as well.
149
As always, make sure you listen to today's lesson at least twice,
150
once with the subtitles on and once with the subtitles off.
151
OK, with that being said,
152
I hope you enjoy the rest of this beautiful day.
153
Get some rest so you can join me on my next English lesson.
154
I'll see you then.
155
Bye bye.
