1
and they honestly don't give a s**t.
2
And he gets a tissue and goes, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh.
3
I would hope that they would potentially say that,
4
but I don't want to sound like I'm blowing smoke up my own arse.
5
Hello, I'm Florence Pugh, and I'm here with Harper's Bazaar UK,
6
and I'm sharing some life lessons.
7
Ooh.
8
When do I feel most beautiful?
9
Honestly, and I know it's just also classic because I'm in it,
10
but when I'm wearing happy colours,
11
Anything colourful I feel most beautiful.
12
I feel like it taps into how I felt like as a child when I'd put on my dresses,
13
or my fairy dresses, or my princess dresses, or whatever it was.
14
What have I learned about beauty?
15
Oh my god, so many things.
16
I learned something from every single time I sit down in the chair with my makeup artist, Babsky.
17
Are there specific things that I remember?
18
No, I just like watching him do what he does.
19
There are some tips though.
20
Always do a lip liner all the way over your lips before you do lipstick,
21
do your lipstick because it stays on for a much longer time.
22
What he does is he does pencil,
23
then he gets a tissue,
24
he goes ooh ooh ooh ooh,
25
so that comes off, and then he does it again,
26
and then ooh ooh ooh ooh,
27
and then you put the lipstick on again.
28
Very clever man.
29
He's on his phone, he has no idea.
30
Gosh, what have I learned about style over the years?
31
That your opinion of what works and what doesn't will change, and that's okay.
32
The more and more I work with incredible designers and incredible stylists on shoots,
33
and also my own stylist,
34
Rebecca Corbin Murray, I've been exposed to so many beautiful fabrics and colors and shapes.
35
And so naturally over the years,
36
I've probably just been able to understand my body a bit more.
37
And I've been allowed to have a bit more fun.
38
And I've been allowed to enjoy the red carpet,
39
which I've just really loved.
40
Why does what we wear matter?
41
It matters hugely because it's an extension of you
42
and it's an extension of your expression and it's your soul visibly being seen.
43
Yes, I did always know I wanted to act ever since I was a wee little girl.
44
On the way to school when I was six years old,
45
I remember I would be acting to Tracy Chapman
46
because Tracy Chapman would obviously be playing in the car on the way to school.
47
And I would be trying to time the tear from falling down my cheek as I looked at this field.
48
I think I was a born dramatic.
49
What have I learned about the concept of success?
50
Oh, you can never see it from your own position.
51
It never looks like you got there.
52
It never feels like you've made the final step.
53
It never feels like you are at the point that you thought you were at,
54
but you are.
55
The most rewarding.
56
Genuinely, when people say that whatever it was that I did helped them or inspired them or affected them,
57
and it could be anything.
58
It could be me doing a performance or me playing a character
59
or me doing a specific thing in a scene or that I occasionally used to do some cooking videos.
60
The idea that I have in some way helped
61
or affected another human on this planet is a really wonderful thing and it's hugely rewarding.
62
And thank you for all of you that like to let me know that.
63
Oh my goodness, what's the one piece of advice?
64
It's going to feel very far away and it's going to feel very hard,
65
but it should be enjoyable.
66
I do personally believe that if you are a good person with the right energy,
67
then you are deserving of that.
68
And I also do believe that all those people
69
that I remember watching growing up or I remember meeting that had that have all become huge stars.
70
Good people want good people to thrive and people like watching good people thrive.
71
So also remember to be good.
72
What have I learned about friendship?
73
Oh my God, I've learned that friendship is just as complicated as love.
74
Like friendships, it's crazy how often we talk about our partners or our boyfriends or girlfriends or I mean our husbands,
75
whatever it is.
76
And you actually spend, if not more energy and more time on friendships
77
that you don't discuss and you don't put time and energy into.
78
And one of the things that I've learned is throughout all of it,
79
throughout the last 10 years of my life that has been so bizarre and wonderful and weird and great,
80
the most consistent and the most constant has been my friends.
81
And they also require tender loving care and tender loving attention.
82
And that's so important and it's so cool.
83
Like, I love the fact that my relationship with my best friends has changed over the years,
84
and I love that we all care enough to put the work into it.
85
So yeah, I'm here for that this year.
86
I'm really trying to be a good grown-up friend.
87
How would they describe me?
88
Ah, potty, barmy, um, changes her outfits five minutes before we leave the house
89
and get in the car always cooking for them i'm always trying to feed my friends even
90
if they're not hungry
91
and i would say the same about my friends they would
92
describe me as a caring one my friendships mean a lot to me in my life
93
and it hurts when i can't be there for them i would hope
94
that they would potentially say that
95
but i don't want to sound like i'm blowing smoke up
96
my own ass what have i learned about love it's not
97
supposed to hurt it's also not supposed to be easy
98
but it's not supposed to hurt and the amount
99
that it hurts isn't supposed to show the amount of love there is
100
and that was one that i've learned recently but yeah that full stop
101
how do i know when i'm in love i've noticed
102
that i tend to feel like all of me is enough
103
and all of me is accepted i know that i don't feel like
104
that when i'm out of love it's usually because someone is putting the time into me so that I can,
105
I suppose, respect and love myself.
106
And then when it happens, it feels gorgeous.
107
What have I learned about confidence?
108
I've learned that it will get you in trouble,
109
but when it's potent enough,
110
it will also inspire and it will also excite and it will also be a very,
111
very important and beautiful thing,
112
but it doesn't necessarily mean that you're rewarded all the time.
113
It's a tricky one, that.
114
Learn my worth and stand up to what I believe in.
115
Oh, I don't know.
116
I'm still learning how to do that.
117
It's really hard to know your worth,
118
but I think that's natural and I think that's normal and I think everybody that's young, that's...
119
I mean, I mean, to be honest,
120
any age, you're not supposed to know your worth because the moment you know your worth,
121
everybody panics because once you know it, you're kind of unstoppable.
122
You just have to keep on reminding yourself,
123
looking at what you've done,
124
looking at what you've achieved and it will grow.
125
It definitely isn't something that just happens.
126
It takes time and I'm still doing it.
127
It's a bit like when you ask your grandparents,
128
like, oh, isn't that embarrassing?
129
And they honestly don't give a shit.
130
I can't wait to get to that age.
131
I think it's ever evolving.
132
It's constantly going to take time for you to realise just how powerful you are.
133
How have I learnt to deal with unfair criticism?
134
it changes.
135
It changes all the time.
136
Sometimes I'm like, oh, fuck off.
137
Don't be so ridiculous.
138
And then other times I'm like,
139
oh, that really hurt my heart.
140
And maybe they're right.
141
And I did think that I shouldn't have worn that short dress when I left this morning.
142
It's constantly evolving.
143
And I think it's also because your moods and your mental health is always going to be ever changing.
144
One of the things I've definitely had to start doing more
145
and more in the last few years is removing as much energy
146
that I had on social media and I've definitely noticed
147
that like me stepping away a little bit more was hugely
148
helpful for me just to allow myself a bit of a break
149
and to allow myself to also be a bit wonky and that's fine.
150
Oh this one was a great one okay I heard it recently lodged it in my brain when you stop people pleasing.
151
People will stop being pleased and that's okay.
152
And it's such a simple sentence,
153
but it blew my mind.
154
Thank you so much for watching and listening to my life lessons.
155
I hope they helped.
156
I don't know if they did.
157
I did just ramble for quite a lot of them,
158
but yes, from my brain and heart to yours.
159
Thank you.
