Salutations!
2
This is Guthrie Govan here, and I'm here to introduce you to this rather fetching thing, my new signature guitar.
3
I was three years old when I started playing, but it wasn't really a conscious choice.
4
It was a case of growing up surrounded by music being played in the house, and seeing a nylon string guitar just propped up in the living room.
5
So it was the most natural thing in the world for me to start learning how to operate the thing.
6
All I've ever done over the years I've been playing guitar is just listen to everything around me
7
and absorb the aspects of it that I liked So I've never felt an urge to specialize.
8
I'm happy just to keep combining whatever flavorings I like and rolling it all together
9
You end up on this quest to find an instrument
10
that feels as natural as possible I think it's a good goal
11
when you're playing not to have to be aware of the instrument
12
and for it to feel more just an extension of yourself
13
and then you can concentrate purely on what kind of noises you're trying to make and share with the world.
14
This guitar is the result of that process in me personally.
15
The purpose of an instrument like this is to have the
16
kind of dream instrument where you get called to go somewhere to do a session
17
or to do a gig and you have no idea what will be expected of you.
18
Can you hop on the airplane with one guitar confident
19
that it will actually be able to deliver whatever the people at that the other end would need.
20
This is a different flavour.
21
Charvel's hold up really well to abuse.
22
That was a big part of what I wanted to test during the development of this model.
23
So the necks in particular on Charvel's are extra stable, extra reliable.
24
I can attest to this because I explored every form of punishment that you can subject one of these to.
25
And I think it's a mixture of caramelising the maple and sticking graphite in there as well.
26
I've been to Japan many times, and the thing that strikes me consistently is how much everyone cares about doing things properly.
27
It's an assurance of quality, and this thing is immaculate.
28
I shall attempt to talk you through some of its many features.
29
Caramelized maple neck, locking tuners.
30
The nut, it's been cut well, and I think that's the biggest thing that you have to care about when you're nut shopping.
31
How accurately have the slots for the strings been cut?
32
You should have an enjoyable, friction-free life as you bend and whammy yourself into oblivion.
33
The frets, as on the US model, they're massive steel frets because I like to bend a lot.
34
These are lumen lay and they really do glow in the dark and it's a very satisfying thing.
35
These knobs have glow in the dark numbers.
36
This is really useful for me in studio situations.
37
If you're recording a number of guitar parts and then you listen back and discover, hang on, track three, actually the G-string was slightly flat, we have to do that again.
38
What was the sound again?
39
And if you can recall exactly where the knobs were, then you can just punch in seamlessly and no one will be any the wiser.
40
Pickups, these are, in terms of design, the same as the US pickups.
41
When I was sent this prototype, I didn't notice any sonic difference at all.
42
If I had, I would have whined about it.
43
This is exactly the same bridge as the American one.
44
I don't think you can find it on any other guitar, which is a shame, because for me this is a great compromise between the world of the locking trim
45
and the world of a more traditional trim.
46
And then the arm attachment is possibly my favorite thing about this bridge.
47
It's completely solid.
48
You can go from slightly bent down to slightly bent up.
49
Now if we look at the back we have this sculpted arrangement here.
50
You can play all your stuff up there, so no problem getting up to the higher registers.
51
The bulk of this body is basswood, and tonally that's a great thing, because basswood is very neutral.
52
And perhaps it's time to address the obvious cosmetic detail here.
53
I finally have a guitar that's sunburst instead of just wood-coloured.
54
We were actually able to come up with a couple of new tweaks to make this even more of an all-rounder.
55
And you can't even see them, so I'll tell you what you're getting for Christmas.
56
When you hit the chord really hard and then mute it suddenly
57
and you have the world's most overdriven amp setting sometimes you can hear the springs ringing out sympathetically.
58
I talked to the Charvel guys about this
59
and they said what you need is some foam we have
60
the perfect foam for you we will insert it between the spring cavity
61
and the springs and and your sympathetic ringing problems will be over.
62
There's more secret foam lurking in this guitar and it's under this pickup.
63
If you do want to lower that bridge pickup slightly, either to stop overloading your recording interface
64
or just to keep the output a little bit more in line with what the other pickups are doing, this is now achievable and it's all thanks to the magical properties of foam.
65
Teenage me would be really happy to know that one day I would end up with a signature guitar.
66
But it also comes with a kind of responsibility.
67
I think if you're going to have your name on the back of a headstock of an instrument, that's you almost personally vouching for the quality and usability of that instrument.
68
It's not something to be taken lightly.
69
I have a guitar now that I'm completely confident to take anywhere in the world and do any kind of gig with.
70
For anyone out there who's heard the kind of thing I do and the way I blend different styles, or the way I need to access different tones,
71
if that's something that resonates with you, then I can only cordially invite you to try one out.
72
Should you find one of these in the wild, who knows, you might just like it.
