How do industrial distillation columns pull complex chemical mixtures apart?

A simple boiling pot just won't cut it when you need to separate liquids with nearly identical boiling points.

It starts with a mixed liquid pumping directly into the middle of a massive steel tower.

Gravity pulls that liquid down to a powerful heater at the base.

This boils the mixture, launching a stream of hot gas upward, an engine called the reboiler.

But that gas doesn't just fly straight to the top.

The tower is stacked with horizontal plates that force the rising gas to bubble through cooler, falling liquid.

These are the trays.

And they cause a constant chemical swap.

Heavy chemicals in the gas cool off and condense back into the liquid, while the heat vaporizes lighter chemicals, sending them higher up the tower.

This happens at every single tray, purifying the rising vapor step by step.

At the top, the highly pure gas flows into a chilling unit.

It cools the gas back into a liquid, that's the condenser, while the heavy, less volatile liquid drains out the very bottom.

This exact cycle of boiling, bubbling, and condensing is what separates every drop of pure gasoline from raw crude oil.
