1
So, they say success is a mindset.
2
No offense to whoever they are,
3
but that doesn't really help me much.
4
You see, I've got problems with procrastinating,
5
feeling overwhelmed by all the stuff I need to get done,
6
and just overall pitiful time management skills.
7
I needed a real-life example to live by,
8
so I chose one of the most successful and productive dudes out there – Elon Musk.
9
Okay, it's not like I'm shooting to get rich quick or becoming a multi-billionaire overnight .
10
It's just that once I started doing a little research on the tech tycoon,
11
I quickly understood that this guy is a productivity ninja who's mastered the art of time management.
12
He has multiple companies, the most well-known being Tesla and SpaceX,
13
and has admitted that he works 100 hours a week or more.
14
Now I wasn't gonna start doing that,
15
but I did try to follow his typical schedule for a week.
16
I started on a Sunday evening by planning my week ahead,
17
based on what I'd read about Elon Musk's routine.
18
Much to my dismay, the first thing I found out is
19
that he wakes up at 7am every day and somehow functions on just 6 hours of sleep.
20
Oh boy, this was gonna be a long week.
21
But I was set on doing this experiment,
22
so I went to bed at 1am.
23
When that alarm went off at 7 on Monday morning,
24
I swear it felt like just a half an hour had gone by.
25
After smashing that snooze button a few times,
26
I finally managed to drag my half-conscious self out of bed at 7.20.
27
Listen, I'm a pretty traditional guy.
28
I like to get my recommended 7-9 hours of shut-eye each night,
29
so 6 hours was not enough.
30
Even by the end of the week,
31
I still felt groggy on such little sleep.
32
But I read that it takes at least 21 days for our bodies to get used to a new routine.
33
So maybe I should try this experiment for a month next time.
34
Still, 6 hours of sleep isn't enough, Mr. Musk.
35
Thankfully, Elon is a daily morning shower kinda guy,
36
just like me, so that certainly helped pull me out of my slumber.
37
He never skips this key part of his daily routine,
38
and neither do I.
39
I just couldn't wait to get some breakfast in my belly afterwards.
40
Oh, that's right, Elon Musk skips breakfast.
41
Seriously, where does this guy get his energy?
42
Well, at least he drinks coffee.
43
To be honest, the first couple of days with no breakfast hit me hard.
44
And yeah, I'm pretty sure the whole office – no,
45
scratch that – the whole building could hear my stomach growling once I got to work.
46
But I guess my body started getting used to this new diet,
47
because by Wednesday, I was feeling less hungry and my stomach didn't growl so much.
48
I was kinda worried whether or not this was bad for me,
49
and I found this article on Healthline.
50
It lists some studies showing that it makes absolutely no difference to your body if you eat or skip breakfast.
51
It'll make you hungrier at lunch,
52
which was definitely the case for me.
53
But you won't eat more than the number of calories your body needs.
54
As for lunch, I wolfed it down in 5 minutes.
55
Not only because I was starving by then,
56
but also that's how Musk does it.
57
Now, let's move on to the ninja stuff.
58
Like I said earlier, I plan my goals the Sunday before,
59
but when it came down to daily tasks,
60
Elon Musk always plans his day ahead.
61
So I wrote down all my important tasks
62
and prioritized them from the smallest to the biggest as far as time consumption goes,
63
or obviously, more to less urgent when it came to deadlines.
64
One of Musk's golden productivity rules is to work in a 5-minute block system,
65
which means that for 5 minutes,
66
I had to stay completely focused on one thing and then switch to another.
67
This is the key to his unbeatable multitasking skills,
68
and his system really works.
69
Those 5 minutes were truly productive,
70
and it made me realize how much you can achieve in such a short time without getting distracted.
71
Some of my projects take hours to finish,
72
but by breaking them down into smaller steps that I spent less time on,
73
in the end, it took me fewer hours to get my projects done.
74
Now, I'll be honest, I missed my 5-minute deadline more than once,
75
but as the week progressed,
76
I got better at it.
77
Plus, like I said, I've always struggled with procrastination.
78
It's starting a task that I need help with.
79
Once I get focused on it, I'm pretty good.
80
Although not as good as I thought,
81
but I'll get to that here in a bit.
82
But with a detailed plan on what I'm gonna work on first and for how long,
83
I was blowing through my to-do lists.
84
So about being super-focused even for a short period of time.
85
Elon's 5-minute rule has taught me that I'm not nearly as productive or busy as I thought.
86
That is, I waste a lot of work time not working.
87
For example, I chat with my coworkers,
88
answer text messages, scroll through social media, the usual perpetrators.
89
When I was able to track my time and efficiency,
90
I was mind blown.
91
The first day, what used to take me a solid 8 hours to do,
92
ended up taking me just 6.
93
By the week's end, I'd cut that number down to 4.
94
As for phone calls, Elon suggests not taking any calls during the day except for emergencies.
95
But since I don't really get many calls,
96
I applied this rule to texts and messages on social media.
97
I made it a strict rule to set my status as busy
98
so that all my friends and family knew that from 9 to 6 I was unavailable to chat.
99
As for work-related emails, I answered the important ones first thing and all within 5 minutes.
100
saved a lot of time on the email thing.
101
I would've never guessed I was wasting so much time going through my inbox.
102
I also signed up for a gym membership.
103
Not just because Elon Musk does it,
104
but, well, it was long overdue.
105
Plus, now that I was getting all my work done at the office,
106
I wasn't bringing it home with me anymore,
107
which meant more free time for me.
108
So I hit the gym twice this week,
109
and I gotta say, I think I understand where Musk gets his energy.
110
Working out really does charge your battery, so to speak.
111
Speaking of free time, let's move on to the fun part – the weekend!
112
Needless to say, after following such a strict schedule,
113
the only thing you wanna do is relax and have fun – and eat breakfast.
114
Unfortunately for me this past week,
115
Elon Musk only takes Sundays off to spend at home with his family.
116
Well, since my office is closed on Saturdays,
117
I just brought my work home with me and got a head start on Monday's tasks.
118
I also did some cleaning around the house .
119
As for my one and only day off,
120
I went out with some friends and told them all about the week I just had.
121
After following Elon Musk's schedule for 7 days,
122
here's what I've gotta say.
123
First of all, I think I'll stick to most of it,
124
but I'll probably tweak a few things.
125
Getting 6 hours of sleep is not for me,
126
but I like getting up at 7 and having time to plan my day ahead.
127
So I'll hit the sack at 12am to get that precious extra hour of shut-eye.
128
And I'll spend some of that extra hour on a good breakfast.
129
Even if experts say you can go without,
130
I'd prefer to fill my tank before I head to work.
131
The same thing goes for lunch.
132
I'm not a fan of gulping it down in 5 minutes.
133
With extra free time at work,
134
I'll be sitting down to a good lunch, thanks!
135
Planning the day ahead and tackling tasks in 5-minute blocks will be my new norm.
136
The boost in productivity is undeniable,
137
and my boss has even taken note.
138
Hey, I wouldn't say no to a raise.
139
I'll continue ditching my phone during work hours and keeping the emailing at a minimum because this saved me loads of time.
140
I'm enjoying the gym, and I feel really good.
141
It's even become sort of a new hobby of mine.
142
I'm learning how to target certain muscle groups,
143
watching what I eat, and just trying to live a healthier lifestyle.
144
I'll stick to this one too.
145
As for the weekends, I need my Saturdays, man.
146
I understand Elon has a lot on his plate,
147
but I'm no CEO or entrepreneur,
148
so I can afford to take two days off a week instead of just one.
149
But I think now I have a much better understanding of how this guy is
150
so successful and always He's coming up with new, innovative ideas.
151
Musk stays busy alright, but he's a master of time management.
152
How he does it on little sleep and no breakfast,
153
however, will probably forever be a mystery to me.
154
So what do you think of Elon Musk's daily habit?
155
Would you like to give any of them a try?

  • 「I chose one of the most successful and productive dudes out there」
    この表現では「chose」を使った過去形を学べます。物語を語る際の時制の一貫性が重要です。
  • 「I was set on doing this experiment」
    こちらでは「set on」の使い方を学べます。これは、自分の意図や決意を示すのに役立つ表現です。
  • 「Much to my dismay」
