1
Good afternoon, my name is Eli Howes.
2
Can you please tell me your full name?
3
Yes, of course.
4
My name is Khomein Ruzibaev.
5
And what should I call you?
6
You can just call me Ruzi.
7
Okay, Ruzi, in this first part, I'd like to ask you some questions about yourself.
8
Let's talk about your hometown.
9
Is your hometown a big city or a small place?
10
Well, my hometown is actually a simple countryside town, which is located around 20 or 30 months away from Tashkent,
11
the capital city of Uzbekistan.
12
I usually go there whenever I want to rest or gather my thoughts after a long and boring day.
13
How long have you been living in this small place?
14
I think I have been living there for the better part of my whole childhood.
15
Unfortunately, I cannot spend much time there because I have to work and my work is located in Tashkent.
16
Is there anything you dislike about this place?
17
Oh yeah, the roads, they're very inconvenient because like if you have a transport like a car,
18
you cannot really drive safely because you might bump into something, a hole maybe.
19
So if I could change something about my hometown, it probably would be the road systems.
20
Let's move on.
21
Let's talk about asking for help.
22
Do you ask for help when you have a problem?
23
Well, due to my personality, I, to be honest, all the time I try to help myself
24
because I don't like asking other people whether they could help me or not.
25
But sometimes I have to.
26
I kind of have to because there are issues that might not be resolved only by myself.
27
For example, whenever I need help with improving my speaking abilities,
28
I usually go to my old teacher who has more experience and better knowledge than me, and he helps me.
29
When was the last time you asked for help?
30
I think the last time was when I needed to develop my demo lesson for the interview.
31
So my teacher who had been working in the company
32
which I was applying for for five years kind of had you know free time because he was on the vacation.
33
So I asked him for help and together we developed my demo lesson and I passed my interview with flying colors.
34
And do you think it's good to offer help when people ask you?
35
It depends on situation.
36
Sometimes people might ask for help because they're lazy, but at times you kind of need to give a lift to them.
37
For example, last time I had one issue with my colleague.
38
He was about to go for a vacation, but his group of students had an exam next month.
39
So I offered my help, but actually, you know, I regretted it because they didn't need any help.
40
And I just put a lot of workload on myself.
41
So instead, I could have just, you know, rested and not worry about it.
42
Let's move on.
43
Let's talk about staying at home.
44
Are you the type of person who likes to stay at home?
45
Well, I have itchy feet, to be honest.
46
I like traveling around my hometown or around the capital city,
47
but in most cases I find myself enjoying my presence at home because there I can relax and be myself,
48
not worrying about other people around me or about crossing the road or something.
49
So I would say that I'm a home alone person.
50
What do you do when you stay at home?
51
Well, usual boring stuff.
52
But the first thing I try to do is read.
53
So I like reading, to be honest.
54
And I have a pile of books in my room.
55
And I try to just dig in and read everything possible, if I have time, of course.
56
And when you were a child, did you spend a lot of time at home alone?
57
Yes, actually.
58
I used to be alone all the time because my parents were kind of busy.
59
They had to work to support our family.
60
So I was the one responsible for the household chores.
61
And I also would look after my cats because nobody else could.
62
We're going to move on to part two
63
and in this part I'm going to give you a topic
64
and I'd like you to talk about it for one to two minutes.
65
All right, remember you have one to two minutes for this so don't worry if I stop you, I'll tell you when the time is up.
66
Can you start speaking now please?
67
Yep, of course.
68
So having lived in a place where a lot of people like discounts and cheap offerings,
69
I know a great deal of people who like buying stuff in a low price,
70
but the most stingiest of all of them would be my grandma.
71
Her name is Sarvinos.
72
So she usually likes to buy food.
73
And when I tell you she likes to buy food, it means that she just,
74
you know, hoards everything in the fridge and usually uh she goes for something
75
that is you know the cheapest i remember whenever uh we
76
used to go for a walk she would all all the
77
time drag me to bazaar bazaar is like you know gathering
78
of stalls where you can buy food cheaper than in stores
79
or supermarkets so she also would argue with uh sellers trying to find a good price
80
and persuade the let's say the store manager to
81
lower the price to the one that she desires
82
and the reason why she uh let's say prefers uh doing
83
so is that she comes from the background of war so she's a boomer baby we call them i think and
84
in the past they didn't used to have a lot of food
85
or money so they had to kind of find their way out of this
86
so they would do exactly like uh what my grandma is
87
doing trying to find the most cheapest things food for example and setting up enough money to spend it on something
88
let's say more essential like medicine maybe donations in house or any other things
89
I also have other people who are similar to my grandma, for example my mother, but she's not a lie.
90
Thank you.
91
Do you think it's a good thing to save money?
92
We cannot say that it's a good thing because you cannot set it in stone.
93
Sometimes you have to spend money because if you just hoard it in one place,
94
you will eventually just die because of old age and have a pie of gold and somebody else will spend it eventually.
95
Hey, we've been talking about someone who likes to buy things at low prices, and I'd like to discuss with you one or two more general questions related to this.
96
Let's first of all talk about places to shop.
97
So you mentioned going to the bazaar to do your shopping or going to markets.
98
A lot of people also like to go to shopping malls.
99
What do you think is the difference in the kind of products and shopping experience in these different places?
100
So in the market, I think there is an order because everything is fixed, the prices are fixed, there are no people,
101
just the staff members that are there to assist you.
102
But in bazaars, it is different with such kind of vibe where you can go anywhere and everyone and everything,
103
they are different, totally different.
104
Because you can, for example, look for clothes, let's say, And you might go to one place.
105
In one place, they might tell you that the price is $15, $16.
106
But then you might not like it and go for something else.
107
And there, if you are persuasive enough, you can get price down to, let's say, $10.
108
And you also can make friends who, let's say, will assist you in finding the best prices.
109
Well, people who haven't, for example, engaged in bargaining with sellers, like your grandmother, you know, she's an expert by the sounds of things.
110
What advice or what tips would you give them on how to bargain successfully?
111
although i'm not myself good at this but i would advise one thing
112
and it is trying to be nice because uh sellers usually like
113
when you treat them like human beings uh if they notice
114
that you see them as barriers of getting a good price
115
then usually they um you know uh raise the prices for you
116
but if you're nice to them if you talk uh long enough to them then you will have friends and lower prices.
117
In your country, would you say that there's a big generational difference in the places that people like to shop?
118
For example, you mentioned how your grandmother likes to go to the bazaar.
119
These days I have seen a tendency that younger people prefer marketplaces or bazaars because,
120
well, they don't like talking.
121
the generation has changed and they prefer just you know doing something without any effort of communication
122
so instead they go for places that have more expensive items
123
and products so they don't go because of that okay
124
and what about online shopping is that popular
125
and prevalent in your country i think recently it has become big in uzbekistan because uh the analog of amazon
126
has been opened here.
127
It is called Zoom.
128
And a lot of people, even the elderly, they try to buy stuff from there because it is easier.
129
You do not have to go anywhere.
130
And you can also get some, let's say, things that you normally cannot find in physical stores or bazaars.
131
Okay, let's move on.
132
Let's talk about advertising.
133
Some people feel that adverts shouldn't be
134
targeting children especially for example unhealthy products such as sweets
135
and chocolates what do you think about that I totally agree with
136
that because children let's say they're easy to manipulate so
137
if you show them an art of candy
138
and let's say put some kind of influencer who is popular among the children children will buy it even
139
if they do not like it so I think it should be illegal
140
or there should be some kind of restrictions to prevent children from getting influenced in a wrong way.
141
And do you think that should come to the company's discretion
142
or do you think that there should be for example top-down governmental regulations and restrictions on the type of adverts that appear?
143
Yeah, the government, the legislative power is responsible for controlling everything because I don't think that any other organization can do that.
144
Okay, do you think that this will happen more
145
and more in the future especially as for example advertising becomes more effective
146
and efficient at getting especially young or vulnerable people to spend their money
147
so i think yes because uh ai has been getting blind share of attention of companies
148
so and companies right now they're they do not need people to make ads instead they make ai do it so
149
a lot of advertisements will come out eventually and they will target everyone
150
so without any regulations i don't think
151
that we will live in a peaceful society okay thank you very much
152
that is the end of the speaking test very good speaking
153
test how do you feel well i feel like i do not deserve higher than seven blimey really
154
because i was i'm thinking is this eight or is this 8.5
155
oh really that's that to me that is wild that you think
156
that could be band seven that was a phenomenal speaking test
157
and i'll tell you why it was
158
so phenomenal first of all your fluency is a very high level you're wonderful at communicating both simple
159
and complex ideas you can engage with any question
160
and you can talk at length on a range of different
161
topics using specific vocabulary your part two topic was very well organized and very charismatic you told your story very well,
162
taking into consideration using discourse markers and putting in information in the correct order.
163
Your Lexis is great, you use a wide range of vocabulary,
164
you're very good at communicating your message and you pepper your language with interesting idioms that are appropriately used.
165
Your grammar is very accurate,
166
you've got wonderful control of different tenses and you can use both simple and advanced grammar appropriately to convey your message
167
and your pronunciation is also wonderful you've got great rhythm in your voice
168
and you speak at a very nice pace and sometimes slowly
169
and sometimes you speed up
170
and it's very good at communicating your message thank you very much it's
171
so nice to hear from you yeah
172
and now let's talk about some of the things that would improve
173
because well you you feel that that was band seven
174
so i wonder what do you think you could improve on
175
oh to be honest i think uh actually i'm even aiming for band nine near future.
176
So I think there is something I could improve in terms of vocabulary, grammar, because I think I like idiomatic language.
177
Maybe I like idiomatic language and some advanced phrasal verbs, words.
178
And also I think there is hesitation in my words in some parts.
179
There wasn't that much hesitation, to be honest.
180
I'm sure when you watch this video, you're going to be very impressed with yourself.
181
But I can tell that you're someone that holds yourself to a high standard, which is a good thing because that helps you improve.
182
But in general, very little hesitation.
183
And I think you're really capable of getting your band nine.
184
So this is what I would recommend to you to help you get that band nine.
185
First of all, I don't think you really need to improve the range of your vocabulary.
186
I would focus a bit more on accuracy.
187
you said things like I'm a home alone person I think there's a better way of explaining
188
that I'm the type of person who likes to spend time
189
at home for example you said give a give a lift to them
190
and I would just change that to give them a lift so just kind of looking at the word order
191
but in general your vocabulary is very good you used phrases
192
like to dig in to hoard money you have seen a tendency
193
when I asked about the government you you used a paraphrase
194
and you talked about how legislative power you talked about how
195
the lion's share of something goes in into one place
196
so in general your range of vocabulary is very good the thing about band nine is it's all about accuracy
197
so at this stage I think you just need to be
198
as I'm sure you're doing listening to lots of podcasts having
199
lots of high level conversations discussing lots of difficult topics and
200
that would help you to get the accuracy to
201
that band nine level with grammar there's there's still a slight confusion with articles
202
which i think is quite common in uzbekistan in general i've interviewed a lot of people from uzbekistan
203
and i would say you're in the top five percent in
204
terms of article use it's obviously something you've worked on
205
and there's just a few slips
206
so you would say something like it depends on situation instead
207
of it depends on the situation um on the vacation instead
208
of on vacation you said around capital city instead of around the capital city
209
so there is still slight confusion with articles but in general this is very well controlled form?
210
Well, yeah, sometimes I, because my English, it became, you know, let's say a bit street language,
211
like I transformed into a street language, articles can be omitted, unfortunately.
212
Right.
213
So maybe if I were you and I was aiming for that ban 9, I would be writing down lots of articles
214
and using for example the AI function on English Pro Tips just to make sure that you're using your articles correctly.
215
For fluency and coherence I think you're already at
216
that band nine level even though you felt that you hesitated I think you're already at band nine for fluency and coherence.
217
I think you speak at length and you order your thoughts very well.
218
The next thing that you could possibly improve on but it's a difficult thing to improve on is pronunciation
219
particularly with two sounds the th sound so words like something something
220
so you can see my teeth my tongue comes between my teeth for the sound something
221
and you say it more like something and
222
so it's almost like your your tongue is staying behind your
223
teeth something something the other sound is the w sound words
224
like well you start you make it sound slightly more like yell
225
so if you wanted to get band nine i would be focusing on accuracy
226
and i'd be focusing on that sound and really training your your body
227
and your vocal muscles to be able to pronounce that th
228
and that w sound oh understood that's a pretty good advice yes
229
so thank you so much for coming on
230
and doing such a wonderful speaking test people are going to really benefit from this incredible performance.
231
Thank you, Sveoli, for having me here.
