1
What if I told you that the thing that you're desperately chasing,
2
the perfect body, fame, success,
3
more money, isn't actually what you want?
4
I have spent 30 years figuring this out and I'm going to save you decades of time,
5
frustration and suffering in the next 10 minutes.
6
We all do this.
7
We all tell ourselves, I'll be happy when.
8
I'll be happy when I lose weight.
9
I'll be happy when I get promotion.
10
I'll be happy when I have a partner.
11
I'll finally be respected when I'm successful.
12
but here's the truth I wish I had have known earlier.
13
Hi I'm Maggie, welcome to my channel.
14
So this is embarrassing to admit but I used to want to be famous,
15
like I really wanted it,
16
ever since I was 12 and I had my first role in the school play.
17
I got attention, I got accolades and I thought this is pretty good, I want this.
18
And like many many actors it came from a deep place of unworthiness.
19
You know like a lot of kids I felt overlooked,
20
not seen, not special and so acting gave me that moment of attention,
21
that moment to shine.
22
It was something that people said that I was good at.
23
So I thought to myself in my little child brain,
24
if I get famous, then everyone will like me,
25
then life will work out, then I'll be happy.
26
I chased that dream for years.
27
The auditions, the rejections, the small wins,
28
always thinking the next role would be the one that made me feel complete.
29
But here's what I've learned.
30
I'm worthy right now and you're worthy right now.
31
We're worthy because we exist.
32
We've all heard the stories,
33
the Jim Kerries of the world,
34
who say that once they became famous,
35
they felt empty and hollow inside.
36
Why?
37
Because they're chasing the wrong thing.
38
They weren't actually seeking fame,
39
they were seeking love, validation and acceptance.
40
Things that they could have given themselves all along.
41
Things that I could have given myself all along.
42
Another example from my life is that I thought that no one would love me unless I was thin.
43
Any relationship that didn't work out I would think it was because I wasn't thin enough or pretty enough.
44
This belief controlled every facet of my life.
45
I was absolutely obsessed with it and guess what?
46
I did get thin and I did find love
47
and now I'm seven years into
48
that relationship with my dream partner who is literally everything I've ever wanted
49
and as you do when you're in relationships sometimes you let yourself go a little bit and I gained some weight
50
and it still was an obsession in this relationship even though I had love do have love right now
51
but I had this realization what I really wanted wasn't the perfect body
52
or the perfect relationship what I wanted was my own love
53
to feel love for myself to approve of myself to deeply
54
accept myself as I am no matter what I weigh no
55
matter what I look like to be okay no matter what
56
And I could have given myself that a long time ago as well.
57
Think about it, how many times have you chased a goal,
58
achieved the goal and then felt happy for a minute or two and then you're onto the next goal.
59
Then you felt that dissatisfaction,
60
that itch, that urge to achieve something else.
61
You know, I work with the elderly.
62
I'm a podiatrist, and most of my patients are over 70,
63
a lot of them well over 80,
64
over 90, and I've even got some over 100.
65
And I've been doing this job for over 20 years,
66
and let me tell you,
67
that gives you a whole new perspective on life.
68
I know what it looks like to age well.
69
I know what it looks like to age poorly,
70
and I'm not talking about looks.
71
I'm talking about mobility and health.
72
I have patients in housing commission flats.
73
I have patients that are in multi-million dollar homes overlooking the beach.
74
I've got patients who spend all of their money on lottery tickets and when I ask them,
75
what are you gonna do if you win?
76
They say, what do I need all that money for?
77
I would just give it to my family.
78
So they're spending all their pension money,
79
all their spare money, even in this cost of living crisis,
80
on lottery tickets for a dream that they're not even going to enjoy because they feel too old to enjoy life.
81
However, I also have some patients who are amazing.
82
They're so curious, they've got a sparkle in their eye.
83
They're so fun to be around,
84
they've got a great sense of humor.
85
They'll say, I look in the mirror,
86
I don't recognize that old lady,
87
so I just keep walking.
88
You know, they never stop growing.
89
They've got purpose, whether it's gardening or traveling.
90
Some of them are doing crazy things like,
91
I had this patient who's like 85 or something and she jumped out of a plane.
92
These patients are so inspiring.
93
There's really something about them.
94
They tend to be really joyful and really content and really accepting.
95
And I think these patients,
96
whether consciously or unconsciously, they understand something crucial and that is we're either evolving or devolving,
97
but we're never staying the same.
98
If you're not growing and learning and experiencing, you are dying.
99
you're getting smaller, your world is getting smaller,
100
you're stunted, no one is gonna stay the same.
101
I had a patient the other day who was complaining to me about her wrinkles and she was 92,
102
complaining about her wrinkles because her 70-year-old daughter-in-law has lovely skin
103
and she was envious of that skin and wanting to get the $12 skincare product moisturizer that her daughter-in-law has.
104
And I'm like, you're 92?
105
I have so many patients who will say,
106
how old do you think I am?
107
This obsession with what we look like externally doesn't stop unless you choose to stop it.
108
You wanna know what true freedom feels like?
109
It's when something that used to scare you doesn't scare you anymore.
110
When you can speak in front of people without your heart racing.
111
When people who used to bother you,
112
who maybe were mean to you or cruel to you,
113
when their words don't affect you anymore,
114
When you don't care what people think.
115
When you've had wounds and triggers that used to just set you off.
116
When it's like water off a duck's back.
117
That's true freedom.
118
When you can look in the mirror and see your aging face and completely accept yourself and love yourself.
119
When you can look at your middle-aged body and go,
120
yes, my body is changing,
121
but I still love it.
122
When you can walk into a party and not be thinking,
123
what will people think of me,
124
but be thinking, I'm curious, who's here?
125
Who can I meet?
126
What can I learn today?
127
That's what real confidence looks like.
128
Not the fake kind when you're seeking validation,
129
where you're putting photos of yourself on Instagram to make it look like you have a wonderful life.
130
Real confidence is when external things don't get to you anymore.
131
Where you're not walking around,
132
getting offended, taking things personally,
133
or being triggered by people.
134
No one has that power over you.
135
I used to desperately want to pay off my mortgage.
136
I still do.
137
Of course, I want to pay off my mortgage.
138
But I used to think I wouldn't feel safe until I paid off my mortgage,
139
which is 25 years.
140
And then someone said to me,
141
imagine having paid off your mortgage
142
and then think about finances what comes up for you
143
and I'm like oh well I've got to pay the rates
144
and I've got to pay the bills and I've got to pay the xyz
145
and what if this and what if that
146
and then it became very clear to me
147
that my fear was around scarcity of there not being enough of not being safe
148
but I can give myself that feeling of safety
149
and security right now by trusting that it's a benevolent universe trusting
150
that things always work out for me by reframing the negative into the positive.
151
I'm bastardizing this but I think Einstein said you need to decide
152
if this universe is friendly or not
153
and for a long time I thought the universe was not friendly but now I truly believe that she is benevolent.
154
She is always pushing you and helping you to grow and to give you the things that you say that you want.
155
However that looks like it may not be how you think it should look but that's what she's doing.
156
I had an experience recently with my YouTube channel
157
which I really really want to grow I love it
158
so much I genuinely love YouTube
159
so now it's probably a good time to ask you to like
160
and subscribe and maybe comment if you're enjoying this video
161
but yes recently I released a video
162
and it did really well it's at 33,000 views
163
which is huge for me very very exciting it's what I always wanted
164
and then something interesting happened fear began to creep in a little bit
165
I started to get a little worried about the next video what
166
if it doesn't do so well what if it was a one-hit wonder what
167
if I can't replicate
168
that success I had forgotten the whole point the whole point
169
is to grow is to serve is to evolve it's to
170
add value to people through my videos it's not to go
171
viral of course I would love my videos to do well but keeping it in perspective what is the point.
172
The point is to make videos that help touch,
173
move and inspire people, to help them lead a compassionate life,
174
a joyful life, offering the knowledge and wisdom that I've gained over my 48 years.
175
Everyone has something to offer.
176
Everyone has life experience.
177
There's always something to offer.
178
So the journey is the destination.
179
A lot of people say it's not the journey, it's the destination.
180
But a wise teacher of mine said the journey is the destination this is it this is it not
181
when I get a hundred thousand subscribers or not
182
when you know you're thin or you're rich
183
or whatever the journey is the destination the joy isn't reaching
184
the goal it's the process of getting there it's all the little wins
185
and victories and struggles along the way it's the hero's journey it's
186
when you're you take your first step and you've got your backpack
187
and then you you travel along and there's dragons you've got to slay
188
and then there's things you've got to overcome obstacles scary forests old man with a crystal ball
189
all these things that is the hero's journey and that is life the journey is the destination
190
it's not getting to the peak of the mountain although that is nice once you're there then then there's another mountain,
191
and then there's another mountain,
192
and then there's another mountain.
193
Thank God there's another mountain.
194
So here's what it took me 30 years to understand.
195
You can have everything you want right now
196
because everything you think you want is because it's going to give you a feeling.
197
It's going to give you a feeling of being loved,
198
accepted, validated enough, approved of, all the things.
199
You're actually searching for that feeling and you can give yourself that feeling right here, right now.
200
You want to feel worthy?
201
Give yourself permission to feel worthy right now and you're so worthy,
202
you're so worthy, you're worthy because you exist,
203
you're an aspect of God.
204
You want to feel safe now?
205
Then choose to feel safe now.
206
Choose to believe that you live in a safe,
207
benevolent universe that loves you.
208
You want to feel loved now?
209
Don't wait till you meet that partner.
210
Love yourself now make the choice to love yourself now develop
211
a relationship with yourself right now we're meant to grow we're meant to evolve we're meant to dream big dreams
212
but not because those dreams will make us happy it's
213
because the process of growing itself is what brings fulfillment look
214
at your own life what are you waiting for what is the thing that you think will make you feel complete
215
or whole or happy or content and give that to yourself right now.
216
The choice is yours.
217
Are you going to wait till someday to feel complete?
218
Life is not about meeting some magical destination.
219
It's about growing until we take our last breath.
220
It's about evolving and trying things out and being the best we can be.
221
You know every time we try something new,
222
we step out of our comfort zone,
223
new doors open, new opportunities appear.
224
It is amazing what can happen when you get into your discomfort zone.
225
It really is a hero's journey.
226
I am so excited by life.
227
Every year that I look back on the last year and think,
228
oh god, that wasn't a good look, oh how embarrassing.
229
That's a good thing.
230
That shows that I'm now in a position where I can do better than I did then
231
and I hope to live that way for the rest of my life.
232
Thank you so much for watching.
233
Much love.
234
See you in the next video.

練習のヒント

この動画の内容を活かした英語シャドーイング練習を行う際は、以下のポイントに注意してください。まず、shadowspeak(シャドースピーク)を活用して、話の流れやトーンをよく聞きましょう。
