Luke here at the Outdoor Boys YouTube channel and it's a cold winter day here in Alaska.
2
I'm gonna spend the night out here with no tent, no sleeping bag, no tarp.
3
And I'm gonna be surviving well.
4
I'm gonna show you how to do it too.
5
I'm gonna try to go up in those mountains.
6
No trail so we just kind of have to find our way.
7
as you can see there's a lot of dead wood around
8
that's why i chose this place plenty of firewood plenty of
9
wood to make my shelter there's also a lot of rabbits
10
around i'm seeing snowshoe hair tracks everywhere there are snowshoe hair tracks
11
if we see one we're definitely taking it for dinner more
12
snowshoe hair tracks that'd be a great place to set a snare
13
well i got a late start
14
and the sun's gonna set on me in a few hours
15
so i'm really looking for a campsite i don't have time to build an elaborate structure
16
so i need a site
17
that will allow me to get something comfy quick i'm not sure exactly what
18
that will be there's a lot of good firewood around here All this standing deadwood is perfect.
19
You can rip it right off without a saw
20
so it's very quick and easy and it's standing so it's not covered in ice and snow so it'll burn well.
21
I can also tell from the type of trees that this isn't muddy swampy ground.
22
You really don't want to set up your camp on top
23
of a frozen swamp only to have it thaw out and turn into a mud hole.
24
Check it out looks like a bulldozer just went through the forest.
25
That's from a windstorm.
26
Fire came through this forest and killed most of the trees a number of years ago
27
and then a wind storm came up and all the dead trees didn't have the strength anymore and they just flattened them.
28
It only flattened this area on the ridge because the ridge is more exposed to the wind.
29
See something down there that might make a good campsite.
30
hard to walk amongst all these downed trees they're covered with just enough snow
31
that you can't really see where the holes are i keep punching through and falling down
32
i am so hungry it's almost sunset
33
and i haven't had anything to eat since breakfast took me way too long to get out here
34
and the hiking has been harder than i expected
35
all right this is what i was looking for
36
one of these large dead trees has fallen over in the windstorm
37
and this root ball is pulled up it's a giant fireproof wall i don't have to build
38
and that's a really good thing not a lot of wind today
39
but i'm in this little nook along this ridge
40
so it's pretty sheltered over here and certainly is a lot of dead wood
41
so i think we need to start getting going and build a fire
42
man i'll tell you what it is cold it's about zero degrees fahrenheit right now
43
i was all sweaty when i was walking around but i am starting to get cold in a hurry
44
I'm going
45
to go to the next video.
46
I got a piece of flint and a steel striker.
47
So I'm going to need a piece of char cloth.
48
This is just an old linen shirt that I charred in a fire.
49
You want to hold it somewhere close to where the sparks are going to go.
50
You just need one of these sparks to hit the char cloth.
51
See, there we go.
52
See, we've got a little ember in there.
53
Now we're going to wrap that in a cotton ball.
54
There we go.
55
It's burning.
56
Okay, now let's get this down in here.
57
There we go.
58
I'm going to throw these pieces of birch bark in there, try to get this thing going.
59
There we go.
60
Starting to catch.
61
Oh, gonna warm my fingers up.
62
That didn't want a light.
63
I had to use all my char cloth and all my cotton balls to get that started.
64
Really don't want this fire to go out.
65
It's gonna get even colder tonight, I'm sure of it.
66
Alright, we're gonna need a lot more wood.
67
I'm just building the biggest bonfire I can.
68
I want to melt all the snow around my shelter.
69
I want to heat up the ground and heat up that root ball.
70
By the time I get ready for bed, everything's got to be bone dry and warm.
71
You don't want to build the fire up tall because all heat just goes up.
72
I want to spread it out so it'll melt that ground as evenly and quickly as possible.
73
All right next to my agenda I need to find 10 straight small spruce trees.
74
I'm not going to be able to get it. So This
75
time of year the sun sets around 5 p.m and won't be up until 10 a.m.
76
That's about 17 hours of darkness,
77
so I've got to have a lot of firewood if I'm going to keep from freezing tonight tonight. Because I've
78
got to work in the dark so much, I've got to bring a ton of lights, both for the camera and for myself.
79
Every time I do one of these trips, I bring about five to ten pounds worth of batteries in life.
80
I'm getting pretty thirsty so I'm gonna start melting some snow.
81
I filled that pot full of snow up to the brim
82
and you can see it's only about a third full of water.
83
You gotta melt a lot of snow to get water.
84
You see there's a bunch of dirt and pieces of wood in the bottom of the pot.
85
No matter how clean the snow looks there's always stuff in it.
86
It's harmless but you know you don't want to drink it.
87
I'm gonna probably have to do this four times tonight.
88
I need a lot of water.
89
My in reach keeps beeping at me saying low temperature warning.
90
Okay we're gonna put it in my pocket.
91
Feels like it's getting below zero degrees Fahrenheit.
92
All my batteries and lights and everything will start getting really affected by the cold.
93
That's a decent pile of wood.
94
That's a good start. so well
95
there we go got myself a shelter took me about three and a half hours to build it
96
and it is roasting hot in here.
97
It's like sitting inside a pizza oven.
98
All this dirt below me and behind me holds the heat really well.
99
So I've got heat radiating on my back.
100
I got heat coming up from below and I got the fire off to my left.
101
It's pretty toasty.
102
These logs are still a bit cold, but they'll warm up soon enough.
103
I've got a few more things I want to do before I go to sleep, but I am so hungry.
104
I need to stop and make some dinner.
105
All right.
106
For dinner, I brought along some moose ribs.
107
These are just two ribs from the moose I shot this fall.
108
Got some garlic salt and pepper.
109
All right we want to cook these on a low heat very slowly slowly.
110
Well there we go got the moose ribs buried in hot coals and dirt.
111
The coals are really hot right now but they're gonna cool off pretty quick
112
and we're just let that sit for a couple hours.
113
Gloves are pretty wet already.
114
I just hang them out and dry them.
115
Got to get everything dry before bedtime.
116
You can see how wet my boots are.
117
Look at the steam coming off them.
118
I gotta get those dry too.
119
While I wait for those ribs to cook, I'm gonna go ahead and make up some bread dough.
120
We've got some bread flour and yeast in here, and I'm just gonna add a little water to it.
121
Got my bread dough mixed up, I'm gonna let it just sit by the fire tonight.
122
By tomorrow it will be nice and fermented and ready to make bread.
123
while I wait for the ribs I'm gonna go ahead and make some soup for dinner
124
All right, I'm going to add a little ugali to my chicken noodle soup to give it a little bit more calories.
125
Ugali is just ground up white corn maize and it's a staple food in East Africa.
126
It tastes like grits and it's a great way to give a stew a little bit more body to it.
127
Oh, I can smell the moose.
128
It's cooking a little too fast.
129
Nothing fancy, just a thick chicken noodle soup.
130
Oh man, it hits the spot.
131
Let's check out this moose.
132
Oh yeah.
133
Oh, that's actually pretty soft.
134
I think I nailed that.
135
Look at that beautiful piece of moose meat.
136
oh that's so good yeah moose ribs are good we've been eating a lot of moose this fall
137
that moose i shot had 567 pounds of meat we don't ate it all
138
but like 30 40 pounds of meat
139
but still that's a lot we've been really enjoying it got
140
some barbecue sauce here oh the barbecue sauce is mostly frozen
141
that came out just perfect oh that's good there we go
142
that was delicious oh man i was
143
so hungry all right guys it's 10 30 i got a
144
belly full of food got a roaring fire got firewood drying around the side of the fire
145
and uh my bed's pretty warm i think the biggest problem is going to be my back.
146
This is not comfy.
147
It's better than sleeping on concrete, but only barely.
148
The only thing to sleep in I brought was this wool blanket, but honestly, I'm going to use it as a pillow.
149
I'm going to put my hip bone right on the balaclava
150
to try to keep from hurting my hip in the middle of the night.
151
We'll see what happens, but I'm going to try to get some sleep.
152
I'm pretty tired.
153
At any rate, I'm going to put the camera up and we'll see how this goes.
154
all right good night
155
hey it's about 7 40 in the morning
156
and my back is killing me stayed mostly warm throughout the night had to get up
157
and stoke the fire a bunch even had to go cut a little bit of firewood around 4 a.m.
158
Man, oh, my back is sore.
159
I never sleep well sleeping on wood beds like this.
160
Oh, yeah, I mean, it's better than sleeping on the ground, but it's hard.
161
My bread dough rose a bit.
162
One side's frozen and the other side's warm.
163
They're kind of like me.
164
I need to get some more coals going for my breakfast so I'm using this thinner stuff to make coals.
165
Didn't bring a cooking griddle or anything like that.
166
This is real bare minimum camping today.
167
So we're going to make bread straight on the coals.
168
It's looking pretty good.
169
Yeah.
170
I hope my butter is so frozen.
171
Alright.
172
melted butter and warm honey
173
oh that's pretty good flour is such a great backpacking food it's
174
so light it's non-perishable
175
and it just makes the most delicious things that's good well it's about 8 50
176
and we're starting to see some color in the sky Okay, sun's going to be up probably in the next 30 minutes or so.
177
I'll tell you what, it was definitely below zero and I stayed warm.
178
My back's killing me, but I was warm.
179
You know, I've tried out a lot of different survival shelters and hands down, this is my favorite one if you're dealing with cold weather.
180
If you're getting rained on or snowed on or there's lots of wind, a lean-to might be better but if you're just straight up trying to survive the cold, this is the best.
181
The shelter isn't complicated.
182
The key is just making sure you warm up the ground and warm up whatever's going to be behind you.
183
The second key is to try to get your bed higher than the fire.
184
Heat goes up and so that if you're slightly elevated, you're going to catch a lot more of that fire's heat than if you were down on the ground with the fire.
185
I think the shelter would work in even colder conditions than what I got right now.
186
Just make these rails longer and then
187
if you start to get cold in the middle night because
188
that root ball is cooled off too much
189
or the ground underneath you's cooled off too much I would just take this fire
190
and kick it underneath the bed then scoot the bed over here
191
and switch places with the fire and you could just do
192
that every couple hours and then constantly be above hot ground I think
193
if you had plenty of fuel and you just kept switching sides like
194
that you could probably last in like negative 20
195
or some really awful temperatures you wouldn't get much sleep
196
but you would make it through the night well this has been fun but I think it's time to pack it up.
197
Well you might have noticed this video is a bit shorter than my typical video
198
and And there's a couple reasons for that.
199
One is I'm exhausted.
200
My wife Rebecca and I just got back from a trip to Palau and we're super jet lagged.
201
Combining that with sleeping on that hardwood, I'm wiped out.
202
But it was one of those things where time was tight
203
and if I was going to get any video it had to be a short video.
204
Oh check out these wolf tracks.
205
Oh man, those look pretty fresh.
206
There's another reason I'm keeping this video short.
207
This month marks the 11th year I've been doing YouTube videos.
208
I've done over a thousand videos and
209
when I started doing YouTube videos it was a fun way for me and my sons to spend time together.
210
But they're in school now and I can't just pull them out anytime I want to go do these adventures.
211
So I end up going by myself
212
and it's kind of blown up into this whole thing where now YouTube is taking me away from my children.
213
And while there's a time and a place for dads to go do stuff on their own, it's gotten a bit much.
214
And when I'm gone like this, it's a sacrifice to my family and my wife.
215
So I'm going to keep this video short.
216
I'll only be gone one night and try to get home and see my family.
217
Ooh, look at this.
218
This is a perfect walking stick.
219
Oh, yeah.
220
Just following these wolf tracks, seeing where they lead.
221
They're kind of heading in the direction of my car.
222
Check it out, those are vole prints.
223
It's a little mouse that lives under the snow.
224
He popped up on top, made hop, hop, hop, hop, hop, hop, and then dove down underneath the snow again.
225
Foxes and owls love to eat those voles, and they have really good hearing.
226
So they'll sit there and listen for the voles scurrying under the snow.
227
Oh, look at this.
228
See?
229
Here's the fox print.
230
And you can see the fox was digging for a vole.
231
Really close to the car.
232
I can hear the highway very loud now.
233
Check it out.
234
Those are the wolf prints.
235
Alright, guys.
236
That's it for now.
237
I'll see you next time.
