What's up everyone?
2
超級別 超級別人的 podcast Slow and Clear 過 What's Up English Now,
3
my name is Carter and I'll be the host of the podcast today
4
and hopefully many other podcasts in the future This podcast is for people who are at an upper beginner level
5
or above in English In this podcast,
6
I'm going to talk not too fast and very clearly
7
so you can practice your listening skills and also your pronunciation skills if you copy me.
8
So if you shadow me, for example.
9
Shadowing means to say what I'm saying.
10
In Vietnamese, I think you guys can say bạc chục.
11
So if you do that,
12
then you can practice your pronunciation.
13
Before we start, I want to remind you that this podcast has English and Vietnamese subtitles.
14
So if there are any words that you don't understand or that you couldn't really hear clearly,
15
just check the subtitles.
16
if you're just listening on headphones on another platform,
17
then you can go to YouTube,
18
look in the description, and download the transcript or just look at the subtitles.
19
So in today's podcast, I'm going to talk about,
20
well, first I'll introduce myself to you guys and I'll tell you about What's Up English
21
and kind of like what you can expect from What's Up English in the future.
22
So firstly, well, very nice to meet you.
23
My name is Carter.
24
Maybe you've seen me in videos on TikTok or on Instagram.
25
You know, those of you have seen me in different places.
26
Some people, they see me on the street and they say,
27
oh, are you the TikToker or whatever?
28
And I say, yeah, yeah,
29
I've made a few videos.
30
And so I wanted to make this podcast to connect with you guys on a personal level.
31
So if there's anything, by the way,
32
you have any suggestions, you can just make a comment.
33
But anyway, I'm getting a little bit off topic now.
34
I made this podcast to help English learners,
35
specifically English learners in Vietnam.
36
And it's mostly for upper beginner and above learners.
37
For total beginners, I don't think it's totally ideal to study with a native speaker.
38
I think it's better to learn from Vietnamese people.
39
But for higher level learners,
40
you can start listening to native content.
41
And that is why I made this podcast.
42
So I want to tell you guys about the journey from making TikToks up until now
43
because I could not believe how many people started following my TikTok and started watching my TikToks.
44
I put out videos nearly a year ago.
45
I believe it was August of 2022.
46
I started putting out some videos on TikTok teaching English.
47
And I thought, oh, you know,
48
if I could get a few followers and a few views,
49
that would be cool.
50
I didn't expect much, to be honest.
51
But I had the goal of making videos that were really useful that could,
52
you know, really help Vietnamese English learners.
53
So I made the first video,
54
didn't get too many views,
55
maybe I think 100 or something.
56
And on TikTok, that's like nothing because TikTok is the easy one out of,
57
you know, the different platforms, right?
58
I made another one.
59
Again, not too many views.
60
And then I think it was the third video that I made.
61
And the content was a little bit different.
62
The style was a bit different.
63
And I uploaded it when I was at a cafe.
64
Then I started driving home.
65
I didn't think too much about it.
66
And then I opened the app on my phone because most people,
67
when they upload a video on TikTok,
68
you know, they, they open their phone to see how many views that they have.
69
And so, yeah, I did that.
70
And then I saw it was like five, 5,000 or something.
71
And that was after about 15 minutes.
72
And so I was thinking something's wrong.
73
Not only that, but a lot of people were following
74
and then every time I refreshed the page there was there were like thousands more views
75
and so I was shocked to be completely honest I did not expect
76
that to happen like I kept refreshing and then there were more
77
and more and more and I was like what is going on I have like 10,000 followers
78
and 15,000 it was exploding and then so well I kept on uploading videos because again,
79
I had all of these ideas in my head that I thought Vietnamese people could really benefit from this.
80
Like it could be really useful for them.
81
And apparently, you know, people liked it.
82
And I was very happy about that.
83
And so I made videos for about...
84
Sorry, I'm talking a bit fast,
85
and so I made videos for about six months consistently,
86
maybe four or five.
87
To be honest I can't really remember.
88
and then I amassed about,
89
you know, a bunch of followers, a bunch of views.
90
Some videos did much better than others,
91
of course, but then I stopped making videos because I had made a lot of videos.
92
I had a lot of people follow me.
93
I had a decent-sized Facebook group,
94
but I didn't have anything else to give the students.
95
And I think TikTok and Instagram Reels,
96
those short videos, I think they're useful for learning.
97
But if you really want to learn,
98
you need to have more.
99
And to be honest, I don't even really like TikTok.
100
I don't like the whole short content thing going on,
101
how everyone is pretty much addicted to short content.
102
Because I see it like that stuff is cake, you know.
103
It's like really sweet.
104
It's delicious.
105
And when you eat it,
106
you want to eat more.
107
And when you eat it,
108
your brain gets that dopamine and you feel really good, right?
109
and so it makes other foods not so appealing.
110
Like if you eat cake all the time or if you eat something so delicious all the time,
111
then the other things that are healthy but a little bit more bland won't be as appealing to you.
112
And I see short content kind of like that.
113
It makes us really used to getting that quick hit of a good feeling and then go to the next one.
114
And many people have talked about this,
115
so I'm not going to talk about it too much.
116
But what I wanted to do was create something bigger,
117
create something more useful.
118
And so that's what I'm working on right now.
119
I'm not going to talk too much about it.
120
I will announce it in the future.
121
but yeah so that's kind of why I stopped making TikTok videos is
122
because I started spending my time making something else
123
and those videos on TikTok they take a lot of time
124
for me to think about what the video will be about to film it to edit it
125
because I didn't have a team I was doing everything by myself.
126
And so it took me a lot, a lot of time.
127
And I realized if I wanted to create something bigger and better,
128
then I need to sacrifice something to have more time.
129
And so I put short videos on pause and I'm working on something else.
130
It's coming soon.
131
All right.
132
I'm looking at my notes here because I made a bit of a plan for this podcast.
133
So guys, what can you expect from this channel and from What's Up English?
134
Well, this channel I plan to upload content at least once a week,
135
whether that is a short video or a long video.
136
I want to focus more on long videos that are really high quality and really useful.
137
so you guys can learn, right?
138
Whenever I'm making a video,
139
I'm always thinking about you guys.
140
I'm thinking like, okay, what would be useful for them?
141
What would they watch and be also entertained by?
142
Because, you know, when you learn English,
143
you also have to have fun.
144
And if it's purely educational,
145
like someone in front of a whiteboard just writing,
146
you know this and this then you feel bored and
147
while it is very educational I think entertainment is crucial especially these days
148
when we can easily go to something else and be entertained
149
so um yeah that's what you can expect from this channel is videos each week and if there's anything
150
you guys want to learn,
151
please just put a comment in the description.
152
I will read them and I listen to your feedback for sure.
153
I don't want to ramble on and kind of bore you with talking.
154
So I don't think this podcast will be very long because it's the first one.
155
And I just want to like introduce you guys to myself
156
and to the to WhatsApp English to the company
157
so again guys download my ebook of the 48 most useful phrases in English
158
that we use every day and write a comment in the comment section let me know what do you want to see.
159
And yeah, this is my first podcast.
160
So it's not the best, but it's something.
161
So thank you so much for watching.
162
And if you want to watch more of my content,
163
just click this video up here, whichever one it is.
164
So again, thanks for watching and I'll see you next time.
165
Goodbye.
